.

.
Yes, it's time once again for 'Battle Of The Bands' ('BOTB').
.
Alright, let's get on it. Let's get ON this thing!
.
But first, I want to wish y'all a HAPPY  MARGARITA  DAY!
.
No one has ever accused me of being a follower of trends. Heck, I am, after all, the author of #1 Rule Of Selfhood which began with the following sentence: One of the things that every person on this planet has in common with all others is individuality -– uniqueness.

Being an original has not always made me popular. In fact, believe it or not, some people dislike me. (Cheerio!) But being such a weirdo character has led me to some one-of-a-kind traditions. For instance, every Christmas day, I drop a quarter into a body of water and wish that Tiny Tim -- although he's dead and buried -- will someday score a second Top 40 hit song.

Also, every January 1st -- which y'all call "New Year's Day" -- I call  "MARGARITA  DAY", and I get me a couple of those salt-rimmed cocktails to celebrate.

MARGARITA  DAY: "A tradition since 1986... except for 1994."

.
Well, this is the first day and first BOTB of 2017. I am actually very hopeful and enthusiastic about 2017, from both a personal and national viewpoint. Nevertheless, being the weirdo character I am, while everyone else is looking FORWARD on this first day of the New Year, I thought I'd take a look BACKWARDS with my BOTB entry.
.
Wackypedia sez: "Goin' Back" is a song written by Gerry Goffin and Carole King in 1966. It describes the loss of innocence that comes with adulthood along with an attempt, on the part of the singer, to recapture that youthful innocence.
.
The song has been recorded by many artists, including Dusty Springfield, Goldie Zelkowitz, The Byrds, Elkie Brooks, Deacon Blue, Marianne Faithfull, Bill Drummond (of The KLF), Nils Lofgren, Freddie Mercury (on a Larry Lurex single), The Move, The New Seekers, The Pretenders, Diana Ross, Richard Thompson, Phil Collins and Bon Jovi, as well as by Carole King herself.

King recorded the song twice, first in 1970 and again in 1980. Let's listen to the latter recording...

GOIN' BACK -- Carole King

.
And now for her competitor, Nils Lofgren, whose cover of the song closed out his first solo album in 1975...

.
Alright now, “you know the gig”... I welcome you (whoever you are) to vote for your favorite of these songs in the comment section below. And feel free to tell us WHY you chose one song over the other.
.
Question: Will Carole King win this Battle?
The New & Improved MAGIC 8-BALL - "now with the Electrolytes that plants crave" - sez:  "Most Likely"

.
After voting here, I suggest - actually I insist - you pop over to the blogs of the other 'BATTLE OF THE BANDS' participants to see which songs they have chosen and vote there also. (If their ‘BOTB’ blog bits aren’t posted yet, get yourself a MARGARITAdo it twice! – and then return to their blogs to vice your voice ...vote your vice ...voice your vote.)

  1. This is a song that I love dearly. The only version I'd ever heard was the one by the Byrds so I always assumed it was a song by McGuinn or another Byrd member as it carries a distinctive sound like so many of their songs.

Going into this I assumed I'd be going with Lofgren since I'm a big fan of his music. He does a great job with it, but his version seems overly frantic for the song subject. Good, but not as good as King's. His instrumentation is fantastic and the vocals are of that excellent Nils quality that I like so well.

King on the other hand better captures the since of melancholy and wistfulness that I think the song calls for. Her version is more like the Byrds (which is still the version I prefer as it best captures the sadder qualities of the song with their superior instrumentation and vocal harmonies).

Carol King for me. Great battle with a song that I never tire of hearing--and now I know there are more versions of it out there.

Happy New Year to us all! And God Bless Tiny Tim, you, me, and everyone--even the jerks (though I hope they aren't blessed overly abundantly unless they have come over to God's side).

Although I knew it existed, I had never heard The Byrds version before. I went and listened to it and, not surprisingly, I didn't like it as well as either version I used here. But then as I'm sure you remember me saying in the past, I am just not and never have been a fan of The Byrds.

Tiny Tim thanks you. He told me so.

I haven't made up my mind yet about the jerks. For some of them, a good swift kick in the head might be the best, most beneficial blessing they could receive.

  2. Happy Margarita Day! I had a bit too many of those in Panama which resulted in doing the chicken dance by the pool( I don't remember) and falling in the pool resulting in a very bad hand sprain which still shows up...I call it my Panama hand:) Ahhh the fun times...that was 11 years ago. Ok so back to the song, I go for Carole King because I like the way she sang it and liked the style better. Oh...sad note, I heard William Christopher passed away yesterday and wondered if he ever spoke to you at all.

Your "Panama Hand" -- Ha! I have a "Prescott Finger". Grand Marnier knocked me down in the middle of a street, and I happened to have a big rock in my hand at the time. Really mangled my finger terribly, and I have the scar to prove it.

  3. Stephen, I think I remember this song. I liked both covers but it's King's version that made my mind drift back and Carole gets my vote! Lofgren didn't tap into that reminiscing of days gone by vibes. Nice battle. I hope you and your family has a blessed 2017, my friend. Here's to another year of good friendship and lots of fun!

  4. Happy Margarita Day, ya weirdo! (I can say that because I'm a weirdo, too!)

Those are some rather interesting traditions. So about this quarter in a body of water... does it count if you drop your wallet in the toilet? Or in a puddle on the street?

I can't say that I am familiar with this tune, and while I've always kind of liked Carole King, I was more drawn to the Nils Lofgren cover. My vote goes to Nils.

My battle is scheduled to post at 12:01 PST Jan 2, but I am feeling rather antsy, and MIGHT just unleash it sooner.

Ha!-Ha! Well, so far, it hasn't even counted if you drop a quarter into a body of water. Because after all these years, 'Tip-Toe Thru The Tulips' is still Tiny's only hit.

But did you know that back in my partying youth, when I was part of a drinking gang called "The League Of Soul Crusaders", the expression "dropped my wallet" was actually code for "I threw up". Ha!

Thanks for the vote. I know Nils appreciates it. (Well, he would if he knew about it, anyway.)

  5. Whooah! I broke my own rule and kept right on reading and read Lee's review. Usually, I try to vote without being swayed by anything else...'cause I'm such a FOLLOWER, ya know. ;-)

On the plus side, now I know someone already agrees with what I'm going to say; actually, I could have written a clone of his assessment.

Nils Lofgren is one of my favorite guitarists and I have followed him since I was aware of NILS ANYTHING on the planet. Love him!

But when I first listened to his version, my immediate thought went something like, "hey...the balance isn't very good in this recording..." I couldn't put my posable finger on what or why exactly, but he just didn't do it for me like Carole King this time.

The melancholy of her delivery got me. Not so much yearning, but somewhat like she had just made a decision and she was GOOD with it. Kinda made me want to say, hey girl! I'm a-comin', too.

    I gotsta vote KING!

Happy, happy New Year, Brudder Stephen. May you be blessed today and always. Stay outta trouble...if that suits ya.

  6. Al Bondigas here. I remember when you sort of turned me on to Nils Lofgren. It was in the very early eighties I believe. I always liked that album, especially that song. Songs that are pensive and elicit memories of the wonderful days we experienced in our youth really get to me. Carol King's version was good, but doesn't even come close to Nil's. Familiarity might have something to do with it, but something about his voice really touches me. ( The John Wayne kind of way, of course ). Anyway, rulin for The Grand Marnier kid. That's it!! That's my rulin'.

Yep, I kinda had you figgered as a vote for Nils, but I wasn't 100% sure because Carole brings the melancholia to this song and I know you get all teary-eyed. In fact, I seen it on this year's Christmas card. (Don't worry, you'll get that pony someday.)

  7. Good battle again, Rupert!

Me likey both versions; vastly different feel but both work. However, I must go against the Magic 8 Ball on my ultimate vote. Lofgren's driving and rolling double time piano is peachy. It evokes a "march," like he is really marching back to his youth. And Nil's voice (just business as usual here) has an untrained and shaky quality that offers a plaintive timbre that to me fits the song perfectly.

    NILS, enthusiastically.

I thank you, Sir Sixgun. Yeah, I like how the song is arranged so drastically different on both recordings. It's always interesting to get an idea of how many different ways there must be to arrange any song and make it into something else.

"Peachy"? "PEACHY"? I trust you meant that in a strictly John Wayne way. (Do you and Judge Al have something you want to tell me?:o)

I liked your analysis of Nils' approach to this song. I hear it like that too and I think it works in both ways, just as you stated at the beginning.

Thanks for the vote, SBB-6 (even if the Magic 8-Ball is a bit ticked at you for the moment).

I wish y'all a wonderful 2017. (Not sure yet what I'm wishing you for 2018. We'll cross that bridge when we get to it.)

    2. I'll see your bet by wishing youse a "wonderful" (JW) 2017 also. And I'll RAISE you by wishing you a great 2018. HA!

Perhaps "peachy" was not the right choice of terms, though John Wayne DID say the word in his 1932 film "Ride HIM, Cowboy." (It was the name of his horse. High-HO, Peachy!)

I shoulda gone with the word delightful, delectable, or scrumptious. JW, of course.

    3. Alright, then fine, JERK! I'm wishing you a pretty good 2019 then, also!

Oh, yes, I remember that Duke picture. That was before Wayne had developed such a masculine cinematic persona.

      "High-Ho, Peachy!"
Ha!-Ha! That would have worked in 'RUSTLER'S RHAPSODY'. (You've seen that one, right? Man, I LOVE that movie!)

Yeah, delectable and scrumptious are mucho mo' macho than "peachy". Personally, I generally go with "yummy".

Love this song! And for me, it belongs to Carole King. She sings it so well and I love the emotion that carries over in her version. When she sings it, I feel it, I really feel the lyrics. I don't get that from Nils Lofgren's version. I loved the music in his version though. But Carole gets my vote.

Excellent song choice! Now I'm in a Carole King mood...

  9. First, they played that MD bit on AJ. I can't even think what word MD used (began with B), but I didn't know what it was. I doubt any of the people he talked to knew what it was either. IMO, the fact that no one said they didn't know speaks more to an unwillingness in people to admit on camera they don't know something. So, instead they look like morons. The big truth: turn a camera on someone and watch their IQ drop.

    Your battle was tough
I listened to both three times. My initial thought was I liked King better. This song was brand new to me. My difficulty arose when I understood the words better (on first listen) with Nils. After second listen, I thought it would be perfect with his voice and her music. After third listen, I decided both were lovely just as they were. I'd listen to both again. But, I have to vote!

I'm giving this to King. I liked the music (arrangement) a lot. It felt nostalgic to me. Vocally they were on a par. So, finally a battle when the instruments decide it for me! I bet Magic 8 Ball wouldn't have predicted that!!!

  11. This si certainly a superb BATTLE. This is my third time listening to both versions and I still can't decide. I came by this afternoon and thought I might vote, but then I read your reply to Michele and thought I would hold off for awhile to see if you would send those big handsome men over here, but no luck, eh?

Each version has it's merits. Carol's tone of melancholy evokesthat sweet longing for times past and there's no questioning her talent as a songwriter. I probably should give her my vote for the simple fact alone that it IS her song.

BUT, I'm a sucker for that piano Nils has got gong on there, and his marching type beat (yeah, I lifted that from SBB6's comment-because it is right on) seems so appropriate. So, in the end I gotta give it to Nils, he probably won,t win but I gotta do my part and vote my fav.

Excellent BATTLE. I actually like it when it's hard to decide.

Ahh, I'm glad you liked this Battle so much. It's been on my list to do since about the beginning of BOTB but I only just now got around to it. In fact, I nearly gave it away to another BOTBer.

I would have sent the search party out for you, but those big handsome guys said, "Ewww... But it's raining." (Nobody ever said that all big guys are "real men". Girlie men come in all sizes.)

Yeah, two very different approaches to the song but I feel that both are valid in their own way.

Nils has got a fair amount of ground to cover and at this point it doesn't look good for him. But at the same time, of the regular voters I can think of who have yet to chime in, I suspect most will side with Nils. So, this could be a close one at the Finish line.

      Thanks for your vote!

  12. The first day of the new year is a great time to establish, or perpetuate, traditions. I need to start a few of my own. This year I sat in a hotel room in a snow storm and binged on a show called Once Upon A Time. I don't go out an party any more - age getting to me I guess - but I did eat at the hotel bar and grill, and that Dead Duck was worth making a yearly tradition.

I really liked Carol King's version, and was pretty sure I'd prefer a female voice singing this song. But Nils does have a slightly feminine voice, and I loved the energy of the tempo. So, Nils gets my vote.

  14. This was a tough one. Even so, I’m glad I read your post from top to bottom for a change. When I first heard Carol King’s version I thought that this might be a good Warren Zevon song. What a coincidence it was seeing the El Coyote Margarita at the end of the post. I wanted to say it was a “serendipitous discovery” but then I’d have to settle on one of those fruity, alcoholic seltzer drinks…not that there’s anything wrong with that.

It’s hard not to vote for Carol King. The only thing I didn’t like was the sound of someone hitting one of those percussion-triangle things. The sound kinda-sorta pierced my brain a little. Nils tipped the scale with his piano; would have sounded great at Rosie’s Bar. The Padre would have approved.
