.
Welcome back, my friends, to the "Battle" that never ends.
We're so glad you could attend. Come inside! Come inside!
.
This is 'BATTLE OF THE BANDS' ('BOTB') where you listen to different recordings and vote for the one you like best. A new Battle gets posted on the 1st of each month and on the 7th, I place my own vote, tally 'em all up and announce the winner.
.
Friend? Foe? Stranger? No matter, ALL are welcome. So pull up a chair, pour yourself 24 oz. of DOG BITE High Gravity Lager (or the poison of your choice) and turn it up to Eleven!

BOTB RESULTS: 2024, APRIL 15 (Or, SINATRA & RIDDLE VERSUS BASSEY & RIDDLE)

.
MY FRIENDS, MY FRIENDS!! ~
.
My most recent Battle Of The Bands' Battle Of The Booze contest took place HERE. The song was 'I Get A Kick Out Of You'; the contestants were Frank Sinatra & The Nelson Riddle Orchestra versus Shirley Bassey & The Nelson Riddle Orchestra; the booze was champagne
.
Unquestionably, Shirley Basset Bassey had to be considered the underdog going into this match-up, and doggone if Frankie baby didn't capture the first 3 votes submitted! But Bassey & her bongos weren't going down without a fight.
.
Like many, I grew up listening to the (Classic) Rock of the '60s & '70s. I owned hundreds of LPs and went to the major concerts (Bob Seger, Blue Oyster Cult, Thin Lizzy, UFO, REO-Journey-Styxwagon, etcetera, etcetera).
.
In the '80s, my musical tastes began to change drastically and I eventually came to love Jazz far more than Rock. And that's why today, with only some rare-ish exceptions (e.g., The Beach Boys & The Carpenters), I'm more about the arrangement and instrumentation than I am the vocals. I definitely preferred Frank's singing to Shirley's singing, but I also preferred the Nelson Riddle Orchestra's musical approach to the song in Bassey's recording. As usually occurs, the music won out over the vocals for me, and I gave my vote to Shirley. This contest was a close call for me, and it was a close call for Frank and Shirley, too!
.
FINAL TALLY:
Frank Sinatra = 7 votes
Shirley Bassey = 5 votes
Nelson Riddle Orchestra = 12 votes
.
My great THANKS to every one of you who came by here with your two cents for the BOTB kitty! I intend to return here on May 1st with a new Battle, and I hope YOU will return here, too!
.
I'll send you off with what Beer Boy Bryan rightly said was the best-ever recording of 'I Get A Kick Out Of You'

BATTLE OF THE BANDS: 2024, APRIL 15 (Or, FRANK And NELSON Versus SHIRLEY And NELSON)

.
Howdy, Handsome DogGs & Pretty DogGesses!
.
It's time for Round #8 of Battle Of The Bands' Battle Of The Booze.
.
This time we have two classic singers - one male and one female - going up against each other. The hooch (a.k.a. "evidence") in the song is champagne (a.k.a. "bubbly"). The male singer is Frank Sinatra; the female singer is Shirley Bassey. BUT!...
.
...a thing I find particularly interesting in this match-up is the fact that behind both singers is the SAME orchestra and conductor. Have you ever heard of Nelson Riddle and The Nelson Riddle Orchestra? Yeah, of course you has, you marvelously musically edgeukated friends o' mine!
.
I also find it ultra-interesting how the same orchestra operating under the same conductor sounds so completely different in both versions of the same classic song! Listen and you'll see what I means:
.
I Get A Kick Out Of You
by Frank Sinatra (& The Nelson Riddle Orchestra)

I Get A Kick Out Of You
by Shirley Bassey (& The Nelson Riddle Orchestra)

In ye olde comment section, please vote for which recording you liked better betwixt these two, and then please visit the other wonderful BOTBers and also drop your two cents in their comment sections.

.
I plan to return here on or about April 22nd with my own vote (*if I can figure it out*) and the Final Tally of this BOTB installment. Until then... get a goot juan!

BOTB RESULTS: 2024, APRIL FOOLS' DAY (Or, TINY TIM VERSUS THE CHARLIE DANIELS BAND)

.
As Tiny Tim said 54 years before beating Charlie Daniels in Battle Of The Bands:
.
"MOST OF ALL, I’D LOVE TO SEE CHRIST COME BACK TO CRUSH THE SPIRIT OF HATE AND MAKE MEN PUT DOWN THEIR GUNS. I’D ALSO LIKE JUST ONE MORE HIT SINGLE."
~ TINY TIM
[Interviewed by Harold Ramis for
Playboy magazine, June, 1970]

.
Yep! You understood that correctly. Tiny Tim conquered the hilarious Charlie Daniels Band 7 votes to 6 in my most recent BOTB's Battle Of The Booze contest
[link> HERE.
.
My genuine appreciation to all of you who took the time to visit here and cast a vote. I'm sure everybody figured Tiny Tim was a major underdog in this contest, but I actually had a strong feeling he would win. Why? Because, over the long history of Battle Of The Bands, Tiny Tim has won more contests than he has lost, and everyone is always surprised, re-surprised, and re-re-surprised when they discover (or discover yet again) that a great many of big Tiny's songs were considerably better than his weirdo reputation would seem to imply.
.
So, Tiny Tim advances to the future BOTB Playoff round, and Charlie Daniels... continues on his trip to L.A. via Omaha.
.
I plan to return here again on April 15th with a new installment of BOTB's BOTB, so I hope all y'all will return also. Until then, may you...

BATTLE OF THE BANDS: 2024, APRIL FOOLS' DAY (Or, TINY'S CHAMPAGNE VERSUS CHARLIE'S BEER)

.
DogGs & DogGesses ~
This being April Fools' Day, I felt that a couple of fun & foolish songs were in order for Battle Of The Bands' Battle Of The Booze
.
Hereabouts, I am a legendary notorious Tiny Tim fan. And although I do genuinely dig 73.84% of Tiny's music, I knew that he would be a perfect fit for my April Fools' Day BOTB installment. Q: Is there a fun & foolish song I can find to use against big Tiny? A: Yes! I found an ideal competitor in Charlie Daniels.
.
What we've got here is  failure to communicate Tiny's champagne versus Charlie's beer. Or, 'Then I'd Be Satisfied With Life' versus 'Uneasy Rider'.
.
All I want is wheat germ for my breakfast
A CHAMPAGNE fountain sizzlin' at my feet
While Rockefeller waitin' on the table
And Lombardo's band a-playin' while I eat.
.
If I only owned Western Union cable
And if Tuesday Weld would only be my wife
(*Tiny, I love you!*)
If I could only stay sixteen forever and ever and ever
Then I know that I'd be satisfied with life.
.
Fun Fact: In Tiny's song, Nico (of The Velvet Underground fame) played the role of Tuesday Weld.
.
I just ordered up a BEER and sat down at the bar
When some guy walked in and said, "Who owns this car
with the Peace sign, the mag wheels, and four on the floor?"
.
Well, he looked at me and I damn-near died
And I decided that I'd just wait outside
So I laid a dollar on the bar and headed for the door
.
Alright, let's get on it.
Let's get ON this foolishness!
.
Then I'd Be Satisfied With Life
by Tiny Tim
.
.
Uneasy Rider
by The Charlie Daniels Band
.
Remember: This is really about the songs and not the booze. So, in ye olde comment section, please vote for which song you liked better betwixt these two, and then please visit the other wonderful BOTBers and also drop your two cents in their comment sections.
* See the BOTBer links over there --->
.
I'll return here on or about April 8th with my own vote and the final tally.
