Yes, it's time once again for 'Battle Of The Bands' ('BOTB').
.
Alright, let's get on it. Let's get ON this thing!...
.
.
As everyone knows, March 15th through April 14th is officially "Jazz Month", and in honor of that, my next two Battles will feature Jazz recordings. Settle down, children, settle down! I'm not asking you to write a theme, and I promise you that this won't be as painful as all that. It's not like I'm going to be using any Free-Form Be-Bop stuffs or anything like that.
.
In fact, I think if you'll just open your mind a tiny crack and give this stuffs a chance, you might find you really like it. I believe these Battles are going to be pretty good because I am using RADICALLY different versions of the songs which should really give you a lot to ponder.

.
.
In this first Battle, it's a very old Jazz song titled 'I've Found A New Baby'. The first recording is by the legendary French Jazz guitar virtuoso Django Reinhardt.
.
Django will be going up against trumpeter Clyde McCoy, whose recording of the song is, as far as I know, the first example of what I've coined "Punk Jazz" due to its energy and tempo. McCoy, from the family line of the famous Hatfield-McCoy feud, was a co-founder of Down Beat magazine.
.
{A tip o' me Leprechaun hat to Mary, Mary, Quite Extraordinary for the inspiration.}
.
Question:  Will the Mick win this Battle?
Magic 8-Ball sez:  "As I See It, Yes"

Special Note For CANADIAN Voters:

If that video would not play for you, try link #2 below. If that one won't play either, use link #3, which I am nearly certain will play in Canada. (It's not the same recording but close enough.) And please do me a favor by telling me which of the links played for you. For future reference I'm trying to find a pattern in the YouTube Region Restriction Checker's inconsistent results.

.
Alright now, “you know the gig”... I welcome you (whoever you are) to vote for your favorite of these songs in the comment section below. And feel free to tell us WHY you chose one song over the other.

After voting here, I suggest - actually I insist - you pop over to the blogs of the other 'BATTLE OF THE BANDS' participants to see which songs they have chosen and vote there also. (If their ‘BOTB’ blog bits aren’t posted yet, pour yourself two shots of ‘Grand Marnier’ over ice – do it twice – and then return to their blogs to vice your voice ...vote your vice ...voice your vote.)

  1. Stephen, I didn't know it was Jazz month. One of the cover versions I used today is jazz, so how cool is that? I was able to pay tribute without knowing I was honoring the jazz scene until now. :D I like jazz but not all the time. It was fairly easy for me to pick between these two artists. My ear instinctively was drawn to guitar picking over the horn, so Django Reinhardt gets my vote. Interesting and not all painful battle!

I'm pleased to hear that the Battle was not overly painful for you. It's pretty rare that I set out to hurt my voters' ears. (I've only deliberately done it a few times in 87 Battles.)

      First vote goes to France.

  2. Seems like I remember a good version of this that Betty Boop did. I think it was in some old cartoon back when cartoons had some really cool (hot) music. Either way both these versions are really good so it makes for a tough choice.

Guess I've got to go with Grappelli's hot fiddle playing.

    Django (and Stephane) for me.

I'm pretty sure that wasn't the real Betty Boop, but just someone impersonating her. (Fake Boop)

I'm glad you liked both versions, but I knew Stephane's fiddle was going to seal the deal on your vote.

It makes me happy that your post that inspired my post has now inspired another post from you. In the music world, I believe this would be termed 'Call & Return' or something like that.

These songs were fun to listen to, and while I did the Charleston in my head while listening, I did find myself with a preference to Django.

Off to find me a flapper dress, so I can take this chair dance to the floor!

I knew that wasn't quite it, but it took me a couple moments to get it right myself. (Call & Response.) These Up-At-4:30 mornings really don't agree with me.

Well, Django is off to a 3-Zip lead. If the Magic 8-Ball gets this wrong, that'll be two in a row and time for an electrolyte transfusion.

    2. I used to do the 4:30am thing.. now I'm lucky to get my butt out of bed by 9am. I could stay up all night and never tire, but getting up in the morning makes me exhausted all day long. (and then I can't sleep at night!)

Hopefully someone will come along and prevent this from being a complete shutout.

    3. If God had intended people to get up at 4:30 AM He would have created an alarm clock when He created Adam! That's just another thing mankind has screwed up.

I'm really not at all worried about this being a shutout (YET!). I can think of certain voters whom I believe will choose the Punk Jazz.

  4. Clyde McCoy's version was good, but I'm a big Django fan, especially when you add in Stephane Grappelli. So, Django's the winner for me.

Given some of the groups Django played with that included horns etc., I could easily hear him playing with McCoy's band. That would be something...

Yeah, Django and McCoy playing together would be quite a stylistic dichotomy and would have maybe been magic. Like an open switchblade lying on a purple satin sheet.

  5. And Stephen,

Hmmm.....another good battle. Well, Django is no Edge, why he must have changed chords a thousand times during that song, and Clyde's version was a bit livelier. I'm gonna have to think hard, OUCH, my note goes to Django!
Yah, I said it! What you gonna do? Whatever you do I hope you have a happy Saint Patrick's Day.

  6. I remember this tune from some very old movies and even cartoons. Betty Boop, I think. It was link # 3 that worked for the second video. My preference is guitar, almost every time. The McCoy version was good, but I'm going with Django Reinhardt.

Lee also said he'd heard Betty Boop do this song. I'm definitely gonna have to go look for that now.

Thanks for the vote and thanks for the info about which link worked. FYI, the official YouTube Region Restriction Checker said that ALL 3 of those videos would play in Canada, but I had reason to doubt it when it came to #1 and #2. But just as I suspected, #3 was the only one that really would play in Canada.

Everybody seems to like the McCoy version but the Reinhardt rendition better. I did not foresee this being a blowout, and the Magic 8-Ball be as big an idiocracy as I am!

Well, regardless, I sure appreciate your vote for "the real McCoy", because he's been getting his butt kicked by Django. (In a REAL fight, you KNOW the Irishman would rip that little French fry's mustache right off him, right? Ha! :o)

Can't believe you don't get the "Punk" in this recording. I guess you'll have to wait until the Results post, when I esplain it to ya. (Or, you might wanna give it another listen, but this time approach it in a less "literal" and more "spirit-like" way. Like, how many really "Punk" 1970s Punk Rock bands really included horns?)

Regardless, I sincerely appreciate the vote and Clyde appreciates your support. (He's now reasonably convinced that you ain't a Hatfield.)

    3. Thanks for taking the time to double check that for me, Brother.

I am now about as convinced as I can be that the ONLY YouTube videos that will play in Canada are those that the YouTube Region Restriction Checker says are "UNRESTRICTED" anywhere in the world.

Any video that returns a result that it is is restricted ANYWHERE will NOT play in Canada, even when it says that Canada is NOT one of the restricted countries.

The Region Restriction Checker is really jacked up, but at least now I've learned the way in which it IS jacked up, so there should be no more surprises.

  10. Fantastic battle, here. You know, it's funny, because any other day I would have voted for Clyde. I love that Big Band sound, and I love Clyde. In fact, I'm almost willing to bet that you would have guessed my vote was for him. That would have been right, had he not been going up against Django, a huge longtime favorite of mine (alone, or with Grapelli on the violin). For being so 'simple' in nature his music had such a vibrant, colorful sound. So effortless.

I don't know if you ever heard La Mer (long before Bobby Darin's Beyond the Sea') but I always loved the emotion that really poured out of that one.

So sorry, Magic 8-Ball, but we both vote for Django. My cohort because he prefers strings to horns, and me because, well, Django (not the Unchained variety).

I don't believe I had heard Django's 'La Mer' before.

Indeed, I had both you and Other B already inked in as a vote for "the real McCoy", because... Fire vs. French Girlie Man Mustache. Oh, well. I'll get over it (...about the same time I no longer have to carefully watch my finances).

      Did you see the Judge Al "Nappy" Bondigas comment above? All I can say is that it's nice that some people don't let some other people down. (;o)}

Brother, this Magic 8-Ball is already in the shop. Apparently it got ahold of some tainted electrolytes. However, the 8-Ball mechanic assures me that he can have it repaired and back to me in time for the next BOTB installment. The bad news is that it's not covered by my insurance, so I'm looking at about a $100 repair bill. And you know what THAT means! There will be cryin' in my beer TONIGHT!

  11. Well, I'm in the minority (again), but I'm really used to it by now. As I read these comments I expected to see huge favoritism for Clyde (since that's how I'm voting!), but no. In fact, it was looking like I'd save the day until Al jumped in.

I didn't actually care for Django. I know. Blasphemy, right? I was bored by the time it was over. In fact, I was ready for it to be done about two minutes before it was.

As soon as Clyde started playing... Ding Ding Ding. Winner winner chicken dinner!

In fact, I might play it again. So there.
