Alright, let's get on it. Let's get ON this thing!...

EUGENE  MARTONE  VS.  JACK  BUTLER
.
Here's what Wackypedia sez about our first competitor:
.
"The Stripper" is an instrumental composed by David Rose, recorded in 1958 and released four years later. It evokes the feel of music used to accompany striptease artists. ... The song reached number one on Billboard's Top 100 chart in July, 1962. ... it also became famous as the background music for a contemporary Noxzema Shaving Cream commercial, featuring a Swedish model.
.
.
My parents owned a copy of that album, as did several other "old" people I knew. Methinks David's 'THE STRIPPER' may have been my parents' generation's version of the soundtrack to the Broadway musical 'HAIR'

GOODNIKS  VS.  NO-GOODNIKS

Our next competitor is Henry Mancini who composed the musical soundtrack for the movie 'Breakfast At Tiffany's'. In that movie, there's a scene where Paul Varjak (George Peppard) and Holly Golightly (Audrey Hepburn) enter a bar that has a striptease act for entertainment.

  1. My parents also had the David Rose album--they liked "strip music" due to the show businessy nature of it. After all they would sometimes appear on shows that included strippers and burlesque acts. When I was a very young child they did a brief tour with the "girlie" burlesque show on the Gooding's carnival circuit.

As you might recall I had copies of most of Alpert's early albums and I remember this cut you chose. Great stuff.

I've probably heard the Mancini cut over the years but don't really remember it. As always Mancini puts forth a great effort.

Nice options making for a tough contest here. For old time's sake and having captured the raunchiest sound, I'm casting my vote for David Rose and his orchestra. They really know how to bump and grind.

I had a vague memory of you having said some time ago that your parents had the David Rose album. That was a biggie in our parents' day. (I also vaguely remember that Noxzema commercial that used 'The Stripper'.)

I'm glad you enjoyed the selections. I'd been looking forward to posting this Battle. There's something fun about this type of music, even if one isn't really a strip club kinda person.

    2. Don't know if you've ever seen it, but there is a funny episode of The Jack Benny Show where a young Carol Burnett breaks into a bump and grind dance routine every time the word "strip" is mentioned. Of course the music behind her is the David Rose classic which would have been all the rage at that time.

  3. Congratulations on your 100th installment of Battle of the Bands. I keep thinking I will post something on my blog and then..

I liked David Rose best (he and his orchestra get my vote). Herb and the brass take second for me. Mancini is third. However, they are all very good. I suspect that this will be an interesting race as the votes come in!

First off let me say CONGRATULATIONS on your achievement of 100 battles! An amazing accomplishment.

"The Stripper" brings a smile to my face along with fond memories. I learned to play that song in Junior High School band. We played it often at our ball games. Which seems a bit odd, being that our school was 98% Mormon.

I had heard "Hubcaps and Taillights" before, but never knew the name of it.

"Love Potion #9" - I thought I was going to be voting for this one because I've always enjoyed the lyrics.

Three really great stripper songs! I'm going to cast my vote for Mancini. I found myself enjoying the tune just a little too much. No tequila needed for this one!

Looking forward to your return to twice a month battles. Can't wait to see what you have up your sleeve next...

Thanks for the kind words! (The check is in the mail.)

With your personal history intertwined with 'The Stripper', I'm surprised it didn't get your vote. That was a FUN FACT about your Mormon school band playing it. That's pretty dern funny!

What was that old joke I heard a hunert years ago?... "Mormons discourage premarital sex for fear it will lead to dancing." ...Wait! Was that a Mormon joke or an Amish joke? I can't remember now.

Thanks for busting up this shutout with a Mancini vote. Now I can rest easy for the duration of the Battle.

I got what I think is some good BOTB stuffs comin'. Sixgunboy McItchyfinger's L.A.-theme suggestion has re-inspired me.

      >>... "No tequila needed for this one!"

But don't let that stop ya! WANTING Tequila is just as valid an excuse for pouring it as NEEDING it is. (BTW, every time I got in trouble, Jose Cuervo was to blame. Jose is a bad, bad man, and he always dragged me down to his level!)

  5. Happy New Year, Stephen and CONGRATULATIONS on your 100th BOTB!

I enjoyed all three burlesque numbers. David Rose would be the obvious choice, since it's the most familiar. Herb Alpert's Love Potion was fun, but Henry Mancini was more interesting. Loved the intro! ☺ Please give my vote to Hub Caps and Tail Lights.

So, how would you BET I'd vote? I'd bet that YOU'D bet right.

HA&TTB gets the vote. I like "The Stripper" and remember those Noxzema commercials quite well! It gets going and going and the melody itself leaves you wanting more... just like a big feather or bubble or something right the way of the view.

I don't particularly like the Mancini number. It seems to start and stop and never really get going. Meh.

The Herb, as usual, nails it and turns Love Potion No. 9 into something way different than the original. I like it.

Congratulations on 100 battles! I don't think I've missed any. If I have, shame on me. Here's to 100 more!

When I read that you'd bet that I'd bet right, I thought to myself: I'd bet that he'd bet right when he'd bet that I'd bet right.

But guess what! You bet wrong.

Actually, I thought perhaps you'd dig the quirky drum interludes in Mancini's HC&TL. In other words, I bet as wrong as I could bet. Figures. (I think the Magic 8-Ball is rubbing off on me!)

But I like that Herb is now in the game. No one gets shut out and anyone could win.

You, McBrother, have been a very loyal reader and commenter, and I sincerely thank you. I doubt you've missed a single BOTB. I certainly can't think of any that you were absent from.

I like HA&TTB's version of LOVE POTION #9 better'n the original hit, which I have on my 'American Graffiti' soundtrack album, which I think it is un-American not to have. ...How you like-um that English?

  7. I have on my Outlook calendar "Stephen - song" (I'm a nerd). You're a legend. I gotta give it up for Mr. Herb. "Give it up" is hipster talk for vote for. The cover is nice with whipped cream. Even if the cover was a picture of Chris Farley in a polyester jacket and a short tie that only makes it part way down his belly... I would still vote for Mr. Herb... and also root for him.
You know that scene where John Travolta is walking down the street carrying a can of paint... to the whole new genre.
Mr. Herb's song is what Warren Beatty Wishes he could walk down the street to. That's how good it is. You're a legend, S-Man.

  8. Stephen,

Whoo-hoo, congrats on 100 BoTB showdowns! What a fun post. Honestly, every time I think of strip mewsic the song that comes to mind is "Hey Big Spender". The reason is during the 80s when I worked, fellow co-workers would often hire gals to dance for someone's birthday. Usually, a boss and the service always did this song. They were no actual stripping but it the gals always put on a good show that left me blushing. lol I can only imagine how embarrassed the guys must have felt but I know they loved it.

Now getting to the song choices at hand in this battle. David Rose, "The Stripper"is truly a classic and when you think of a striptease this is the one song that's sure to pop in your mind first. Henry Mancini "Hub Caps & Tail Lights" is new-to-me believe it or not. I loved the arrangement and see this as an excellent candidate for strip mewsic. Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass "Love Potion #9" is fabulous, it doesn't say strip dance to me, though.

So who do I give my vote to? Obviously, HATT is out of the running so this leaves contenders one and two. Mez think...the number by Henry Mancini Hub Caps & Tail Lights called me to center stage ready for action. No, not me stripping but to catch the show! :D

    Great battle!

This is a no-brainer for me. Tijuana Brass all the way. It's 3 fold really. First off ,I grew up as a trumpet player as a young man. Not feeling very cool as youngster ,this album cover added an element of cool to playing trumpet. Secondly, as stated above again this album cover was the beginnings of my young male lust as a 10 year old. The final capper is that I worked for Pat Senatore at Pasquale's jazz club in Malibu. Pat was Herb Albert's bass player. So all the way Jose, Love Potion for the win.

  15. Okay, I'm back. I listened to all three intently and I kinda figured I might vote the way I've ultimately decided to...
The Mancini one is good for sure, but I think the drum solos took them out of the running for me. I've never been a drum solo kinda gal. That being said, the brass is so fine...
That leaves my two favs and I'm actually having a hard time choosing. I love David Rose's The Stripper. So classic. And hey, I remember that Carol Burnett skit. They don't make 'em like her anymore. The whole cast on her show was amazing and Tops all the way. (Did you see the recent CB special a few weeks ago?)

      Take care, M.

  16. And Stephen there's more,

The woman at 06 seconds of David Rose gets my vote, do you have her number....wait I'm a Married Man! But you can't go broke window shopping. I would have loved to have heard any of theses songs at Girls, Girls, Girls or the Ivar. Even more, I'd like to remember being at those places and even more to have the money back that I spent. Back to the battle, good battle once again. Herb Alpert gets my vote for the musicality. Now, do you have change for a 20...small bills preferred I gotta head out to the Sunset Strip...

      >>... "The woman at 06 seconds of David Rose gets my vote"

Me, I vote for the one at 1:50. My kinda hubcaps. :^O

"I like Shelly; you like Jane. What was the name of the girl with the snake skin's name?"

As always, I thanks ya for your visit and yer bote! Gotcha down as $0.02 for Herb Alpert and his TJ hermanos.

This has been quite a Battle. I love it when it comes down to just the last couple days of voting and I still don't know who will win it. That's what BOTB is all about.

      Thanks again, General Poohregard!

  17. Al Bondigas here. Una batalla muy interesante. This one was tough for me. I kept going back and forth between David Rose and Herb Alpert. I really like “Love Potion Number Nine” from The American Graffiti soundtrack and I think Herb Albert and TJ Brass were outstanding, but I’m gonna have to make muh rulin’ fer David Rose and his orchestra. Very tough decision. Them womens may have had some influence. Anyway, that’s it. That’s my rulin’.

    1. Judge Al, you're right, this is a difficult battle. Damned difficult! And this vote of yours just tightened it up and made it even more difficult.

At this moment, this is what she looks like:

      David = 5
      Henry = 6
      Herb = 6

      This is crazy!

Te agradezco por tu valor de dos centavos.

I hope I do not end up with a three-way tie.

    1. What's up, DOC... with the disappearing comment?

I didn't see it no how, no way. Just up and disappeared. Bashful, painfully shy comment, I guess. I just now checked my Spam file in case Bugspot.com sent it there but, NOPE, not there either.

Oh, well, your one-sentence input above still gets the job done in the nick o' time.

  19. Kudos, Reno! Your dedication is inspiring - and always interesting ;-)
This battle was fun, I liked them all. Young as I was when the Noxema commercial aired, I well remember blushing and giggling like I'd heard something naughty - ha! I was sure Tijuana's Brass would swipe the cake off the table, but strangely, Mancini at Tiffany's beckoned me back for a second listen and that did it for me!
I know I'm probably too late (sorry), but thought I'd chime in anyway ;-)

    1. Thanks for chiming in, dIEDRE! My policy on BOTB voting has remained the same from the beginning: I will accept any vote right up until the second that I post the Results page. Therefore, indeed, your vote counted, and I thanks ya for it!

Mancini already had this win wrapped up, but I'm sure he appreciated your help in separating himself from the rest of the field nonetheless.

Thanks for stopping by and taking time to listen and submit your $0.02

I really enjoyed this Battle and I'm pleased that you did, too!

      TTFN,
