BATTLE OF THE BANDS (BOTB)
.
.
Yes, it's time once again for Battle Of The Bands (BOTB).
.
Alright, let's get on it. Let's get ON this thing!...
.
[Link> Last September I did a BOTB installment which included two "driving songs" on a compact disc that my friend Bryan had made for me. The disc was titled 'On The Road Again' and consisted of songs with great "driving" rhythms. Well, in fact, there were two (count 'em: 2) compact discs. One was subtitled 'Pedal To The Metal' and had fast-movin' songs. The other disc, subtitled 'Cruise Control', contained exclusively slower songs for less frenetic night driving.
.
2018: Muddy with 'Pedal To The Metal' and 'Cruise Control'.
.
One song, by two different artists, found its way onto BOTH CDs. It was the old Jimmie Rodgers song 'T For Texas'. A Lynyrd Skynyrd rendition was on 'Pedal To The Metal', and the Tompall Glaser version was on 'Cruise Control'.
.
#8: T For Texas (Lynyrd Skynyrd)
.
#9: T For Texas (Tompall Glaser)
.
In 1986, my buddy Pooh and I drove from L.A. to Devil's Tower in Wyoming, and while motoring along on an old section of the original Route 66 in Arizona, we had Lynyrd Skynyrd's live album playing. While sipping a little "road soda" for to quench our thirst, 'T For Texas' became a first-rate, E-Ticket sing-along for The Pooh and I. That's when it dawned on me that the song was best when heard "on the road"
.
1986: Muddy 'n' me, hitchhiking on old Route 66.
.
1986: Muddy literally "on Route 66".
.
General Poohregard with "road soda" (aka "beer") at Devil's Tower, 1986.
.
1986: Sunbeam somewhere (Wyoming?)
.
It wasn't until a number of years later that I discovered the Tompall Glaser version of 'T For Texas'. It was included on the legendary compilation album [link> 'Wanted! The Outlaws', the first Country music album to sell one million copies and be certified 'Platinum'. Tompall's take on 'T For Texas' lopes along at a slower pace than Skynyrd's but is no less expressive ("Tell Lucille to go to hell.")
.
.
.
Carnac The Magnificent: [link> "Like Doc Holliday against Ike Clanton in a spelling contest."
.
Question: Will Tompall beat Skynyrd?
.
OK, please listen and tell me which version you enjoy more. It's got nuttin' to do with driving. This is just music for music's sake. And if you need to close your eyes in order to keep your vote from being unduly swayed by the images of Skynyrd's onstage performance, please do so. Again, this is just about the music, not about driving and not about live concert footage.

  1. Can't say that this song has ever been big on my favorites list, but I like both of these artists. Somewhere around 1969 I recall hearing a song by Tompall and the Glaser Brothers that I've looked for ever since, but I can't exactly recall what the song was. It was a beautiful song though.

But back to this Battle. I'm going to eliminate the raucous boogie jam of the Allmans--I mean Lynyrd Skynyrd. Too much for me at the moment. Maybe I'd take to it more when driving in the wee hours trying to keep awake. Hope I never have to do that again.

Tompall's version of this song is not as enjoyable or haunting to me as that song I heard back in 1969, but he does a nice appealing loping version that suits this old man's ears better. Tompall gets my vote, but I still wish I could figure out what the song was that I heard by him and his bros. when I had a younger man's ears.

I pretty well had you figured as a vote for Tompall, as I remembered you are not particularly fond of that Boogie jam style.

I have always suspected that Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Allman Brothers, and The Outlaws are the same band playing under different names. Kind of like how Spinal Tap and The Folksmen are the same band. Has anyone ever actually seen The Outlaws, The Allmans, and Skynyrd together in the same room?

I'll have to ask Carnac The Magnificent if he knows the title of that Tompall Glaser & Brothers song you've been looking for. I'd ask Sikike Phetven but he's dead and buried now.

I think Lynyrd Skynyrd jammed on 'T For Texas' so long because Texas is a huge state and it takes awhile for a song to completely traverse it.

Thanks for stopping by with a vote, Birgit. I sincerely appreciate your participation!

  3. I was much more impressed with Tompall Glaser's version of this, which sounded a bit like JJ Cale, than I was with Lynyrd Skynyrd's, which sounded like the Allmans on speed. I'll go with Glaser.

Good observation! The Glaser version does have a kind JJ Cale feeling to it, with that loping beat and the rather languid vocal style.

  4. Howdy, Stephen T!

That sunbeam pic is amazing! For a minute there, I thought you snapped E.T’s departure ;-) Did you know Devils Tower was America’s first National Monument? Did you try to climb it?

I kinda liked the Tompall video, nice country swing tempo, and my sister would love the piano. But I wouldn’t be my brother’s sister if I didn’t vote for ”Make it rain” Skynyrd. So, I’m voting for Muddy.

Just kidding ;-) I can’t help but appreciate the Uncle Shelby aspect of Tompall’s highest charting solo “Put another log..” so (that’s my excuse) he gets my vote – this time ; -)

    Happy Trails!

Thanks for coming by with $0.02 for the BOTB kitty!

Ha! Glad you liked the "E.T." sunbeam photo! It was one of those 'right place, right time' pictures. I've gotten pretty lucky like that a number of times. (I'm thinking of a photo I took in New York City in 1983. These three little girls on a playground slide shortly after a rainstorm. I still shake my head at how I managed to snap that photo with split-second timing. I always think: Thanks, God! That was a goot juan!")

I'm not at all sure about this, but if my fading memory serves me, I wanna say that I took that 'Sunbeam' shot while Pooh and I were on Highway 80 in Wyoming, heading East for Cheyenne.

Wow! FUN FACT: I did NOT know that Devil's Tower was America's first National Monument. And I never would have guessed that, either. I'd have thought it was Mount Rushmore or something a bit more famous like that.

      >>... I can’t help but appreciate the Uncle Shelby aspect of Tompall’s highest charting solo “Put another log..”

Ha! I luv ya for mentioning that! I can't believe you're familiar with that song, as few people are. I'm crazy about it and, in fact, have been planning to use it in BOTB for a long, long time. I just haven't yet come up with the right song to match it up against. I'd put that song right in there with some of the classics by Roger Miller and Jim Stafford. I once entertained the idea of putting that song up against Helen Reddy's 'I Am Woman', but I thought that might be going just a wee bit too far... even for me. ;^D

  6. And Stephen,

I do indeed recall T for Texas getting good amount of play on that road trip. I recall it coincided with a breakup with an Irish girl and you reiterated the making a fool out of me part. Time can make tragedy so very funny. I also remember that I should have gotten a "proper hat" which I regret to this day. I put the extra money towards liquid as I recall. But the photo does capture the haze I was under the whole trip. I suppose I knew the end of my drinking career was near. Speaking of beer, there are only three kinds of beer I don't like: Root Beer, Near Beer, and No Beer!

That was an epic road trip where we chased hangovers from town to town and we were magicians who could turn the 4th beer into a hotel room (we were foolish yes, but oh so wise. You listening to your Mother MF). You no good damn well I'm a voting for Lynrd Skynrd. The other version never really had a chance with me but it was worth listening to and the lyrics are a little clearer. Just love the driving rock n roll of the Lynrd Skynrd version.

    1. ...AND, POOH, THAT'S NOT ALL!!...

There was more'n enough "road soda" consumed on 1986's 'Show No Emotion In A Big Way Tour'. But despite that, there are a few events that I can still remember as clear as if they happened just yesterday. Er... well, just last year, anyway.

Of course there was that weird night at Devil's Tower when the rain clouds suddenly - seemingly out of nowhere - formed directly overhead, and those musicians ran away. And then everyone scattered for their tents or cars. And we went to our car only to find that *someone* (who shall remain nameless, Pooh) had locked our keys in the car.

And then of course there was the unforgettable night in Reno, the following day and night in Virginia City, where *someone* (who shall remain nameless, Pooh) got 86'd from the Bucket Of Blood Saloon.

But there's nuttin' I remember more clearly than us singing along to Skynyrd's 'T For Texas'. The hair of the dog had pretty well fixed the night before, and we were going East on that little stretch of the original Route 66. We were generally in the area of Hackberry, and every time the line came up "Woman made a fool out of me", you would sing "me", and I would sing "him" while pointing my thumb in your direction. Great times, Brother, great times!

Oh, your vote for Skynyrd was never EVER in question. In fact, had you boted for Tompall Glaser, I'd have demanded: "Who are you *REALLY*?! And what have you done with my friend Pooh?!"

We have lived charmed lives my friend enhanced by soul enriching road trips and other shared experiences. Nonetheless, we are shadows of our former wild selves, which is probably a good thing.

  7. I'm with diedre...that is a really amazing picture of the sunbeam. Are you sure there wasn't an alien spaceship up there? Perhaps beaming up some local politician? Looking at it with a magnifying glass...I think I see little legs and falling currency. Yep. It's a politician. And you're at Devil's Tower -- I can almost hear the "Close Encounters" call out to occupants of interplanetary craft. Coincidence? Ah, come on. I see what is happening here. THE TRUTH IS OUT THERE.

Netflix has "X Files" and I was stuck in a chair a lot this summer. ;-|

Something about this battle makes me want Lynyrd Skynyrd to win. Not as much as the "Close Encounters" tune, but yeah....Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Thanks! I got lucky with that picture. Phunny how, to me, that photograph looks like a watercolor painting. I was going to suggest you do a watercolor of it, but then I thought: It already looks like she did!

Fun Fact: Once upon a time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, I was a big fan of the movie 'Close Encounters Of The Third Kind', and that's actually the very reason that I wanted to make that trip to Devil's Tower in 1986. Pooh and I were there specifically BECAUSE of that movie.

Today, I am no longer a fan of the film. Having done my due diligence for several years and coming to the conclusion that "extraterrestrials" are in fact inter-dimensional demons, the UFO fascination for me is long, long gone. (Plus, I actually saw a couple of them in Arizona and I don't wanna see no more.)

Ha!-Ha! Just as I thought Mike would surely vote for Skynyrd, and yet he voted for Tompall, I was almost equally sure YOU would vote for Tompall, and yet you voted for Skynyrd. 9. Two words: "Geiger Grade."

I listened to Tompall first; it was first in line, after all. I liked it.

Then I listened to Skynard and liked it more. I like (not LOVE, you understand... LIKE) The Allman Brothers/Lynyrd Skynyrd Band. I like fast jamming bands. HATE slow "noodling" jam bands like The Dead. "T For Texas" was a rockin' 8-8 time, 8+ minutes of awesomeness.

I liked LS version enough to play it again, Sam. And then as it was finishing I thought: "HEY! This would sound great as background music to the Geiger Grade skateboarder, plus I think it is about the same length, too!" Right-O on both counts.

    I vote for Skynyrd.

BTW, I love that area around Devil's Tower. We went there again last October. Actually, I'd like to move there. Ain't nuttin' else around!

Finally, may I take out an insurance policy for Carnac the M, with me as beneficiary? I think his palm's lifeline has a big break in it. Heck, if tragedy befalls HIM... who's left? None of the great prognosticators have been able to predict their own deaths.

You are correct, sir. None of these psychics have seemed to see their own deaths coming. It makes one wonder whether they're really psychic at all. (Of course, their BOTB prognosticating records have much to say about that as well.)

Should Carnac meet with an untimely demise, there's always Madam Marie, who tells fortunes better'n the cops do.

I have not yet paired Skynyrd's 'T For Texas' with the skateboarder on Geiger Grade, but it makes sense that it would work. I think everything on 'ON THE ROAD AGAIN: Pedal To The Metal' ought to work.

Have you taken The Who's 'Going Mobile' to Geiger Grade yet? I predict good things with that. But then again... for all I know, my own demise might be just around the next corner.

Thanks for your continued BOTB participation, my friend!

      Delete
    3. >>... I am guessing that you guessed right!

HA! With that kind of guesswork, you really ought to try your hand as a BOTB psychic. Oh, wait...

      Lemme put it this way:

If 50% - 50% means I have absolutely NO IDEA how I think a person might vote, then prior to your vote, I would have had you pegged at about 99% - 1%. The 99% representing my expectation that you would be voting for Tompall Glaser.

Judge Al "Nappy" Bondigas also voted for Skynyrd. I predicted him at about 100% - 0% as a vote for Tompall.

In other words, this is probably the wrongest my expectations have ever been in BOTB's 6-year history!

Truthfully, prior to posting the Battle, I figured Lynyrd Skynyrd would probably get no more than 3 votes (from Mike, Debbie, and Pooh). Well, Skynyrd has gotten the vast majority of the botes, and Mike didn't even bote for them! THAT is how "WRONG!" I was.

    4. You must have forgotten the Great Divide. I was 99% certain that you would be voting for Tompall. Because of that - and The Divide - I figured that YOU would would have known that I MUST be voting for Skynyrd. It may be Petty of me to say, but perhaps you fell into The Dip of kumbaya because of a recent musical agreement.

And you are right: I'm no better at predicting than ANY of your psychic consultants, alive or dead. I guess I should avoid it.

      Delete
    5. Ha! Clever wordplay, Sixgun. I saw whatcha did there.

Well... UHP! I'M AN IDIOT! And apparently The Great Musical Divide goes even deeper than I had previously imagined... if you can imagine *THAT*! 2.4% of the time we actually do agree, and I was sure this would be one of those rare instances. Wrong again, Fishface!!

But I guessed wrong on almost everyone this time. This has been perhaps the most perplexing BOTB installment of my amateur career. (I think the chances of me going pro are nil and none.)

And I will be scratching my head over Nappy's vote until the day I die. Mr. Pop, Mr. Commercialism, Mr. Hooks Galore, Mr. Partridge Family - he who turns his nose up at long, pointless guitar solos. Nappy voting for Skynyrd is on a par with Pooh voting for Tompall Glaser (if in fact Pooh had done so, which of course he didn't).

I feel like this Battle took place in the Twilight Zone.

The text response I got was: "No. The Knack was a joke."

Oh, well... Methinks your musical tastes are not a match with Nappy's. ;-) I'm guessing that you and Lee probably match up pretty well, though.

      >>... Love that drummer that you hate.

Are you referring to Neil Peart? If so, for the record, I don't hate him. I just think he's terribly overrated. Technically, he's obviously extremely good. But I don't think he has any sense of "swing". And I've seen many other folks express a similar opinion. He's like an impressive by-the-numbers drummer who has a godzillion pieces of equipment and can change times, but he just doesn't really soulfully "groove". At least that's what my ears be tellin' me, and I always listen to (as well as with) my ears. (Peart plays drums like a White Canadian.)

I am indeed a BOTB greybeard, but BOTB is so unpredictable that I'm not sure anyone does it like a pro. Brother, I'm not even convinced it's possible.

  12. McBanditMan,

Glaser makes me want to put on my my my my my boogie shoes. Or boots - leather not some high falutin lizard or ostrich skin boots. Bum Phillips wore leather boots and told his over-celebratory players when they got to the endzone, "Act like you've been there before." Could be why Earl Campbell had the most nonchalant touchdowns... though Bum didn't need to tell him because he was already doing that at the University of Texas, by gum. And the University of Alabama couldn't successfully recruit him. Turn it up and Eat it 'Bama! Then Bum got fired after management traded for Stabler and Casper and didn't make it to the Super Bowl. Management sumbitches.

Sheriff Branford: "The fact that you are a sheriff is not germane to the situation."
Buford T. Justice: "The Germans got nothin' to do with it!"

    And another thing!

Skinard makes me want to go to the county fair, take my shirt off, and ride that ride that spins capsules around a tilting floor... ... tilt a whirl, throw up a few corn dogs, pound a few Coors, then go to the main fairground for Skinyrd hoot and holla while Betty is on my shoulders in cut-off jeans and flashing her hooters - I'm not happy about it, almost proud of it and hey, if you got it flaunt it.

    Both songs don't kick-a** - both songs ARE kick-a**.

Two songs so different yet the most difficult choice of the battles I've participated in. (Sweet Home Texas rules! Well, been there a number of times). I got to give the vote to Leonard Skenard--hold on - Lynard.. Lynyrd Skynyrd.

That's a great line! Did you come up with that on yer own, or did Adolph Coors loan it to ya?

I'm glad I was able to provide you with a challenge in this Battle. But doggone if I didn't guess all wrong again. I figgered you would be casting an easy vote for Tompall in this one. Not only did I think you'd find this contest to be a piece of county fair blue ribbon cake, but I figgered you'd dislike Skynyrd's song all to hell and back. Shows to go ya what I know, eh?

    2. McBroMan,

Yessir, the Oilers also traded for Jack Tatum that year.. and lost to the Raiders in the playoffs. That's not just fuc*ed up, it's FUC!ED up.

I'll tell you whuut. The catchphrase changed sometime in high school. From, for example:

That Camaro slant six Kicks A**!

      To

That plumb crazy purple 426 Hemi with a foot shaped gas pedal, chain steering wheel, and pool ball stick shifter is Kick-A**!

Yessir, it ain't the county fair until one upchucks, spends 12 bucks before finally throwing a softball into a giant milk jug (even with backspin!) to win a one foot stuffed animal (Not only one foot tall but only had one leg and it still had a "for sale, slightly irregular" tag still on it), guess a midget's weight, and throw too many quarters to land on a plate and win it! When I finally got the plate I could tell they sprayed it with Pam.

I heard Ronnie Van Zant is one of the best guitarists. From people who know musicianship which as you know I don't care about musicianship. The song doesn't just rock it rocks hard! Great battle and glad I got to hear me some new Skynyrd.

Having never been an Oilers fan myself, that strikes me as pretty funny. And it went to show yet again that it's not as easy to buy a championship as one might think (unless it's the New York Yankees we're talking about).

To be honest, I think I've only gone to one county fair in my life, and that was only to see Waylon Jennings who was playing there. You'd think I'd go to see the lizard man and the bearded lady but somehow I managed to curb my curiosity.

Ronnie Van Zant one of the best guitarists? I think you got hold of some bad info there, my friend. Although apparently Ronnie dabbled with the guitar and a couple other instruments, his job with Skynyrd (if we can call Rock music a "job") was to write and sing the songs.

I always appreciate your participation in BOTB, ol' friend.

  13. Al Bondigas here. Goot Juan youse got goin here. When the Tompall song first started I thought it was just way too slow for this kind of song, but I really started to enjoy it after a minute or so. Admittedly, I was way late discovering Lynyrd skynyrd. It wasn't until after the plane crash that I was introduced to their music. Although I enjoyed both versions I gots ta rule fer Lynyrd Skynyrd. That's it, that's muh rulin'. Bring back Bobby Sherman!! Just kiddin.

And yet another vote I didn't see coming. I thought you'd come close to hating the Lynyrd Skynyrd rendition and would actually dig Tompall's take on this song big time. Man, oh, man, was I ever out to lunch with this Battle. This might be the wrongest I ever was in the history of BOTB.

Oh, well, I'm pleased you liked both songs, though.
And if I can't get Bobby Sherman, would you settle for Leif Garrett?
