.
[Goodniks Vs. No-Goodniks.] |
.
So, this Battle is titled 'Stubby Kaye Vs. Don Henley', but it could just as easily have been titled 'Guys & Dolls Vs. Leap Of Faith'. Do any of you have any idea why that is so? ... Anyone? ... Anyone? ... "Yes, you, in the vest, is it?"
.
The song I'm using in this round is 'SIT DOWN, YOU'RE ROCKIN' THE BOAT'. The first recording - featuring Stubby Kaye - comes from the 1955 Hollywood musical 'Guys And Dolls' starring Frank Sinatra, Marlon Brando and Jean Simmons. The second recording features Don Henley of The Eagles fame, and it was used in the 1992 Steve Martin movie 'Leap Of Faith', which I just recently re-watched for about the 6th or 7th time; and I've "seen" (aka "TRT"-ed) both movies within the last year.
.
Full Confession: I like BOTH movies and BOTH recordings. So it's up to you, You, and YOU (izzat better, 6gun?) to determine which recording is better.

Stephen,
ReplyDeleteAhh, thanks! No credited is needed, my friend. I'm always happy to help when I can. I am not going to talk about the passing of time or the weather okay? Your threats put the fear it me, plus I just wouldn't look good with a bottle sticking out of my neck. :) This is an easy pick for me. I'm going with DON HENLEY. Thanks for keeping BoTB going month after month, my friend. Whenever you get a chance, stop by to cast your vote in Summer's End BoTB showdown. Have a bandtastic day. ~Cathy

I thank you for supporting and participating in BOTB, my friend. The list of BOTBers has gotten very slim (I think BOTB is hungry and undernourished), so I really appreciate the steady, sturdy participants, such as yourself. (No empty whiskey bottle in the neck for you, m'dear!)

'STEPHEN T. McCARTHY REVIEWS...'
Nothing wrong with writing about the weather or the passing of time since those are things that impact us most. But even more is the fact that most of the time I don't think folks who go to a blog post even read most or any of it. Sometimes I'm disappointed that I'll write about something that is on my mind and I'll try to put some deep thought into what I write and then in the comments it's as though it never mattered what I wrote so weather and time works for me. Besides, I have a fascination with time and its passage. Writers have written on that topic for centuries probably because life consists mostly of time. And we are impacted by the weather.
ReplyDeleteOf course I guess we could talk about food--that's kind of important. Or movies or television. But in the world of blogging (or daily conversation) weather and time are pretty major topics. And I'd rather hear about those than hearing about someone's stupid pets. Spare me the pets please especially when accompanied by a photo essay of everything cute the pet does.
World of blogging is odd because you get too deep then folks are too busy to read or too befuddled to understand or too lazy to try to understand. We all have our own interests so that's what we write about. We're all in this same boat of time, weather, and food and don't need you to be rocking it.
Which brings me to this Battle of yours. I've always liked this song. I'm most familiar with the version by Louis Armstrong which I used to listen to a lot on a cassette tape of said artist's greatest hits. But it's an old standard that I've heard since I was a wee child (seems so long ago--my how time passes with seasons filled with weather change and climate change and now stupid COVID which changed everything).
Though I like musicals, listening to the song in the chattery context here was just too busy for me and right now I've not got the time for that sort of thing. Not to mention that I've got to go get a COVID test this morning because I'm getting a colonoscopy on Thursday and the med center probably doesn't want me to infect everyone if I do have COVID. Since I have to wear a mask to go to that procedure I hope the weather is not too hot since I have a hard enough time breathing with a dumb mask on. But time is passing quickly so let me get on to my vote.
No to the business of the Stubby Kaye version. I liked Henley's reggae take on the song and he does some nice melodic twists with the song.
My vote goes to Don Henley.
And now on to my day, already passing too quickly, but at least it's morning cool right now and hopefully will stay tolerable for the next couple days if I am to believe the weather report.
Damn! September already? Next thing you know October will pass along with Halloween. At least it should have cooled down by then.

Lee,
DeleteI'm with you on the passage of time. You're right, it'll be October before we even know what happened. You're definitely right about content. A lot of people don't pick up on the details. They are there for one thing and one thing only. I know I'm guilty of doing the same thing but I try slow my brain down enough to catch some of the points the author is making. I still need to work on this more but I'm getting there. :) We're all ready for cooler weather. The heat & humidity make summer days feel longer. If I were a kid playing in the pool then that would be fine by me but I'm not in a pool or a kid anymore. :)
Love your comment, Lee!
DeleteBe well.

Delete>>... Nothing wrong with writing about the weather or the passing of time since those are things that impact us most.
Hmmm.... I always figured it was Spirituality / Religion and Politics that impact us most. Silly me.
I am pleased to announce that you, sir, are the winner of the first annual 'Empty Wild Turkey 101 Bottle Through The Neck' award. As soon as I empty the contents of this bottle, I shall come by to present you with your well-deserved trophy. (Unless, of course, it's raining. In which case we shall postpone the award ceremony until a later date... which will no doubt arrive much sooner than we expected it would!)
What you say about people not really reading and thinking about what we write in blog posts is quite accurate. And that is one reason my "real" blogging (at 'Ferret-Faced Fascist Friends' and 'Stephen T. McCarthy Reviews...') has dropped to barely even an occasional trickle (not even worth calling a plumber about it!)
We are definitely in a post-literate / post-reading period. The vast majority of people no longer have the attention span (and the intelligence) to really dig into a good piece of writing and give it some deep thought and consideration. We are barreling into the Biblical End-Times, buddy, and as we can all see, the "Weather" and "Times" are changing so jaw-dropping rapidly that it can't be anything other than supernatural phenomena.

My stepfather (God rest his soul) was a huge fan of Damon Runyon, on whose works "Guys and Dolls" is based.
ReplyDeleteI have to go with the majority (so far) and go with Don Henley. Not to say that Stubby Kaye did a bad job: his performance was perfect for the Broadway stage, and exactly what Frank Loesser (I looked it up) had in mind for this song. If I were watching a stage production of "Guys and Dolls," it's exactly what I'd expect. But I'm not watching this on the stage. I like what Henley did with the song and liked the slower pace.
JOHN ~
DeleteI did not know that 'Guys & Dolls' was based on a Damon Runyon story. (I learn new things every day... which tells ya how little I know, to begin with.)
So far, Stubby Kaye is stubbing his toe in this BOTB installment.

II'd like to discuss the weather. Specifically, a future song battle between Classics IV singing "Stormy" and The Association singing "Windy." While both are good, I'd have to go with "Windy." It is very repetitive, but I was a 12-year-old when it came out and I really wanted an exciting girl with stormy eyes that flashed at ME.
ReplyDeleteOr, how about a diverse musical battle between Weather Report vs. Dead Weather, featuring your and my favorite: Jack White? What a voice! Gotta love diversity, just for its own sake, right?
See, discussions of the weather can be fun!
Alright… ok. if I MUST move on to your battle, I will.
Both versions of Sit Down are good, and Henley’s reggae take on it is really inspired. I loved it when I bought that album years ago and frankly I did not even realize that it was the same song I had heard several times watching the movie. As good as it is, I love musicals, and the original version is my choice.
Can you imagine a 2020 version remake of “Guys and Dolls”? Hokey smokes, Bullwinkle! Numerous changes throughout, and a new title (meeting current Facebook guidelines. It would not fit on the Marquees.)
“Guys, Dolls, Agender, Androgyne, Androgynous, Bigender, Cis, Cisgender, Cis Female, Cis Male, Cis Man, Cis Woman, Cisgender Female, Cisgender Male, Cisgender Man, Cisgender Woman, Female to Male, FTM, Gender Fluid, Gender Nonconforming, Gender Questioning, Gender Variant, Genderqueer, Intersex, Male to Female, MTF, Neither, Neutrois, Non-binary, Other, Pangender, Trans, Trans Female, Trans Male, Trans Man,

And if you complained about the title, you know what they’d say? “sit down, Sit Down, SIT DOWN! You’re rockin’ the boat!” Who, me? Me? ME?

Hi Stephen, This is a tough one, as I really like both Stubby Kaye’s and Don Henley’s renditions of the song. Though Henley gets a lot of points for creativity, I can’t seem to get Stubby’s sensational show tune out of mind. Since “ A Person Could Develop a Cold,” from all this pressure, I’m voting for Stubby Kaye. Thanks for another fun battle, Stephen!

ReplyDeleteNo question about it here in my mind! It's definitely Don Henley for the win. So much easier to listen to.

BOTB isn't quite the same without you, and I hope you really will rejoin the BOTB family on January 1, 2021. Actually, even more so, I hope there still is a BOTB in 2021. Frankly, I doubt it. Yo S-Man,
ReplyDeleteWhen I saw you titled with Don Henley's name, my immediate thought was the one song I know by him: End Of The Innocence. I quickly realized I had the whole cassette album back in the day. Then there's Boys Of Summer, he has some good songs. I have some abstract thought that Henley is pretentious yet can't find any evidence. I think he had a sour face, while in the audience, through one whole awards show.... Wait, back in the golden age of sampling ("Let's take a Queen bassline, Chic guitar, Mr Ed whinny soundbite, drums from a James Brown song... put them together and rap over it - yo man, kids wouldn't even know who James Brown is if we didn't resurrect him"), late 80's, Henley and Tom Petty publicly said it's not real music. Shortly after, the lawyers stepped in and enforced copyright laws. The sampling genre never fully recovered in unit sales. (Rappers started only paying for and rapping over one old song instead of using multiple sources). Nowadays, one must go to a show with fat sweaty pale people and see a DJ mix records and put up with his insufferable "Make some nooiiise!" "Everybody bounce!" Perhaps Henley and Petty get some credit for all that - sum bitches.
"I don't know what the big deal is. Everybody steals from everybody." - The movie Swingers prompted by a character saying Tarantino "bites everything from" (is derivative of) Scorsese. I say Scorese bites Scorcese. Casino, Goodfellas, The Irishman -- they're all the same movie! Am I the only one who notices this? I feel like I'm taking crazy pills!
I vote for Henley's song which I hadn't heard before.. it sounds good and heartfelt. The Stubby version is good if a bit jarring. ("Say! What's the big idea, Mac!") Makes me wonder whether some stage songs work as stand-alones or work better heard with/surrounded by the other songs from the play.
I don't have a blog so I'll note it here: A gentle reminder to participate in the Counter Jump on September 26. Remember, the Chinese are ALL going to jump at the same time to throw the Earth out of orbit. Everyone in the West is supposed to jump at the same moment in order to balance it out. We got this!

DeleteI coulda, shoulda and woulda been disappointed had you not come along with two cents for the BOTB kitty. Even if we occasionally disagree - but never, EVER about Tony Baretta or Starsky & Hutch, OB! (I think I just invented a new, stoopid shortcut for Millennials. "OB!" for obviously! Because, let's face it, what Millennial could correctly spell 'obviously', and why should they even be expected to? That would just be SO-OOO Twentieth Century!)
>>... Agreed! If Ghetto Kids wanna make music, let 'em practice playing real instruments, maybe even take a community college course on 'Music Theory'. They should also take a course on Ethics and Copyright Laws... taught somewhere outside of Chicago & East and South Central L.A.

This wasn't easy for me, as I love both movies, and I love both renditions. In fact, Don Henley's was so unique that it didn't even dawn on me that it was a Guys and Dolls song as we were watching LoF the other day.
ReplyDeleteBoth are really fitting for their respective movies, but ultimately, I think I have to side with Stubby's voice, which I just like a little more than Henley's. Give my bote to Stubby.
Great battle! And a perfect song for the biggest boat rocker I know. 😂

Didn't make the song "bust", eh?
That's understandable, since the song was done in radically different ways and genres. But apparently a good song will stand the test of... transition.

Oh, my brudder, you are in rare form this week, ha ha ha. I love it...but don't pick on the Chihuahuas, they have it "tough enough" (see what I did there?).
ReplyDeleteFirst and foremost -- great song. And I love a musical (waaaay too much), so kudos for that. I used to imagine what songs could accompany different things going on in my life. Seriously. I guess it was to fuel my top-volume, amateur hour, shower-wailing playlist.
Even though I am enamored of the musicals, songs from the musicals have a hard time standing alone against another version in the Battle of the Bands. Implied theatrics and the pacing (I think someone said chattery) of it kinda knock it down a notch.
The Don Henley version gets my vote! I actually like a lot of ole' Don's stuff. #trueconfessions

Great song haven't heard it in a while. The Guys and Dolls version probably goes better with the musical, Don's version was made for radio as a single. That's the difference Don gets my vote.

Al Bondigas here. Good selections for sure. I saw Guys and Dolls way back in the late 70's maybe early 80's and that song has been stuck in my head for 40 years. I really liked the movie and love the song. It seems to me that a song like this should be done with some degree of energy, so for me, it is a slam dunk vote for Stubby Kaye. That's it!! That's muh rulin'.
