BATTLE OF THE BANDS: 2023, AUG. 1 (Or, JONNY LANG VERSUS DOCTOR JOHN)

.
TODAY IS THE 10th ANNIVERSARY OF
THE 'BATTLE OF THE BANDS' SERIES
.
Wow! Time flies when you're listening to Rock, Jazz, Blues, Folk, Country, Gospel & Show Tunes!
.
I'm also pleased to announce that 'Battle Of The Bands' has a new participant. Kindly welcome Christine @ STINE WRITING. And please be sure you visit her debut BOTB installment, cast a vote, and add her to your linked list of BOTB Participants. Christine is one of us now.
[Link> HA!-HA!-HA!-HA!
.
After a two-month break, we are revisiting the ongoing $ilver Dollar $aloon $ong Challenge. This is the penultimate match-up in this series. You'll recall three things:
.
1) In order for a song to be eligible in this challenge, I *must* have heard it played at one time or another in Virginia City's Silver Dollar Saloon (where dogs are welcome and people are tolerated).
.
.
.
2) Doctor John's 'Right Place, Wrong Time' has been running the table in this contest, having already clobbered these artists:
The Average White Band
Johnny Lang
Greg & Steve
Waylon Jennings

.
3) Although he lost the Battle back in January, so many voters were impressed by that kid, Jonny Lang, that I promised him a rematch against The Doctor.
.
I recently learned that Stephanie, the owner of the Silver Dollar Saloon, passed away some months back. It was Stephanie who, on December 8, 2019, made me aware of Jonny Lang by playing two of his songs for me in her saloon. Therefore, this installment in the $ilver Dollar $aloon $ong Challenge is *DEDICATED TO STEPHANIE*. May she Rest In Peace.
.
.
Alright, let's get on it. Let's get ON this thing!
.
We'll start with Jonny Lang. Although he is 42 today, he was only 16 years old when he released 'Lie To Me'. Sheesh! Shaking-My-Head!! I was still reading Encyclopedia Brown & The Hardy Boys when I was 16!
.
And here's the defending champ, Dr. John:
.
RIGHT PLACE, WRONG TIME -- DR. JOHN

.
Please vote for The Doctor or The Kid in the comment section. Then please be sure to visit the other BOTBers, and don't forget about our new member of the family, Christine @ STINE WRITING. I will return here on or about the 8th of August to cast my own vote and announce the winner.
.

  1. Hey there Stephen!

Looks like you may have stumbled upon a winner with Jonny Lang. Although I may be a bit early in declaring him the winner winner chicken dinner.

Great to have a new person join us.

Stop by and vote for Susan Dey and friends... Or the other group!

It's looking quite a bit like you were right about the "Winner! Winner! Chicken Dinner!" If that's how this turns out, it will be a bit of a mild surprise to me. I expected it to be competitive but guessed that The Good Doctor would squeeze out a fifth consecutive win.

      I went all the way
      with Susan Dey!!

  2. Stephen,

Thanks for the heads up on the new BOTB member. I'll be sure to hop over to welcome our gal! So sorry to read the news of Silver Dollar Saloon owner passing. I hope she's at peace with the Lord.

Turning to your battle. I really like Dr. John "Right Place,Wrong Time" but I really liked the new to me artist JOHNNY LANG a wee bit more and am giving him my vote. Now, I want to checkout more of his stuff!

My battle is now live here. Have a bandtastic week, my friend!

Christine was a bit late getting her Battle posted but it's up now and awaiting your input.

Your vote for the loud Kid surprises me a wee li'l bit, but surprises is what has made the game last for a decade.

  3. As you'll recall, I've been a consistent Dr. John voter. He's had the right song at the right time, in spite of hisself. I love Dr. John and that funky sound.
BUT... Jonny Lang did it this time. He is getting my vote. Maybe it was the video that swayed me, I don't know. That wouldn't be fair... and maybe not anyway. But that was a great song and maybe the champ will be dethroned this time. Also, I read up on that "kid" and the album "Lie to Me" was released a day before his 16th birthday, so he was fifteen. Ridiculous!!!

Congratulations on ten years of fun blogging!

Fifteen? Wow! It was even more extraordinary than I knew.

However, I did know that using that video might - just might - give The Kid a slight edge. As you know, ordinarily I try to keep the videos on an even playing field. My preference, when I can find them, are videos that include the lyrics on the screen. Otherwise I just use a static-image video. But this time I deliberately used Jonny Lang's official video because I felt like his youthful talent (both voice & guitar playing) was so astounding that it needed to be seen to be believed.

I figured that if the video helped Lang a li'l bit, it wasn't such a bad thing because we have seen that any contestant is going to need all the help they can get in order to have any chance of beating The Doctor's 'Right Place, Wrong Time'.

Thanks as always for taking time to come by and drop your two cents into the BOTB kitty! I gotta admit, never, EVER would I have imagined when FAE and I first started it that this blogfest would still be running ten years later!

  4. Well, well, well! I was a Dr. John fan throughout, but NOW, I'm deserting that ship and going with Jonny Lang! What a great song, and, as you know, I LOVE those guitar riffs. 🎸πŸ”₯

Extending a warm welcome to Christine! Good to have some new blood around here. πŸ˜€

Sorry to hear the owner of the Silver Dollar Saloon passed away! May she R.I.P. 🌹

I very, very rarely ever sit down and try to guess in advance how all of my regular visitors will vote prior to my publishing a BOTB blog bit. However, there are times when it's almost impossible for me to NOT know how perhaps two or three regulars will vote, based on history.

For example: I couldn't help but think that YOU were going to vote for Jonny Lang. I had that assumption logged in at about 99.9%. (Always gotta leave a tiny bit of doubt in the event of the 'Purple Waylon' effect. Yeah. It's a new term I just invented. ;^)

I also automatically assumed (99.9%) that Lee would vote for Dr. John, knowing from 10 years of BOTB history that he is not a fan of the Blues genre.

And Brother John I had locked in at about 85%-90% as a vote for The Kid, because based on so many years of BOTB, I know that he *IS* a big fan of the Blues genre.

The rest of the regular "boters" I did not have any strong suspicions about which way they might "bote" in this match-up.

I wouldn't be me if I hadn't toasted to the memory of Stephanie.

Right now it's looking like Jonny Lang has an excellent shot of beating the odds-on-favorite Dr. John. And if that *does* happen, in a way it'll kind of be a fitting tribute to Stephanie, since SHE was the person who made me aware of Jonny Lang in her Silver Dollar Saloon back in 2019.

  6. Happy anniversary! You ought to be right proud. A warm welcome to Christine! Sorry to hear about Stephanie. Sorry about Dr. John too, but it was high time ;-) And Jonny Lang? I liked everything about that kid - including the song. Oh, and, he gets my vote. Please.

Thank you! It's really kind of amazing that BOTB is still alive after 10 years of Battles. (Apparently this is a war that can never be won regardless of how many Battles are fought.)

I gotta say that of all the Battles in this round of BOTB, *yours* is the one I am finding most surprising. When I first saw the match-up, my immediate thought was: I'll bet I'll wind up saving dIEDRE from a shutout in this Battle. I am shocked beyond belief to find Waylon beating Deep Purple. It has given birth to a new term: "The Purple Waylon Effect." This is probably how I will be describing inconceivable BOTB surprises from now on. Is there anything more unpredictable than 'Battle Of The Bands'?!

      ~ D-FensDogG

    2. Don'tcha love it -the unpredictability? I have to admit I was surprised by my own reaction to Waylon's rendition. I could swear I'd heard it before. Guess not, judging by how impressed I was. I did, however, guess your vote right ;-) "The Purple Waylon Effect" - love it!

  7. The kid's good but not good enough. His song is pretty run-of-the-mill to me, but it's done very well for sure. Still, Dr John's song is more original sounding and to my ears just is more fun to listen to.

    I'm sticking with Dr John.

I had you locked in as a Dr. John voter. After 10 years of BOTB, anyone who still can't identify some patterns would be pretty dense. (I'm dense sometimes, but I'm still pert-goot with patterns.)

  10. I love a good Silver Dollar Saloon BOTB, and while I'm sorry to hear about the owner passing away, I can only hope that A) this battle will honor her memory greatly and B) the Silver Dollar is still running smoothly and in good, capable hands.

As for the battle itself, I've been a consistent Dr. John boter through and through, but the soul in that kid's voice and the effortless flow on the guitar got me this time. Give my bote to Jonny.

And to think, right now your average 15-16 year old is doing stupid dances on TikTok and figuring out what gender they are. We need more Jonny Langs in the world.

I'm toying with the idea of a drive up to Virginia City for a wee bit o' hiking this Friday. And if that happens, I will surely check in on things at the Silver Dollar Saloon (where dogs are welcome and I am tolerated). I wonder if I could get a Sazerac (or, Sazarac) there. Hmmm...

      >>... And to think, right now your average 15-16 year old is doing stupid dances on TikTok and figuring out what gender they are.

      Guffaw-Out-Loud!
I can't say much for me at the age of 15-16, but at least I already knew my gender and knew that tough guys don't dance! (The biggest question in my life was: "Where can I find an Asian-owned liquor store that will sell Boone's Farm wine or Southern Comfort to underage punks like me?")

Thanks for stopping by to spike the punch, buddy! Looks like we're gonna have a new champ in the $ilver Dollar $aloon $ong Challenge.

If it weren't for Ron Paul, I'd be fairly inclined to go around saying, "The only good doctor is a dead doctor!"

However, that being the case, Dr. John is dead, so I rather like him and think he was pretty good.

Not to mention that he and Louis Armstrong and I all got drunk together one night on Bourbon Street in New Orleans. It's hard to dislike rich fellas who buy ya Sazeracs all night long. ;^D

We;ve got a certificate that guarantees removal of bubble gum from the soles of your shoes even on a hot day and hot asphalt. Now for your other soul....we've got no guarantees. But I understand you have done much work in that department yourself.
Back to the Battle. I like the Johnny Lang Number and the energy it brings and this is as close as you have gotten to dethrone the good Doctor in my humble opinion. But no, but no, but no! I'ma go with the Champ Doctor John agin.
In the meantime enjoy that next trip around the sun my good old friend. LTBA!

(As the manager of the motel in New Hampshire said to you during the 'B.F.D. TOUR' of 1987.)

Ordinarily, I respond to comments in a 100% stream-o'-consciousness manner (which I mastered in the second week of June, 1983, after many years of practice and many bottles of Kahlua... all... night... long.) But in this case, I am going to respond to your comment with strict consciousness and deliberation... possibly even to the point of inebriation. ...Deliberation, Inebriation... Mmmm... Sorry 'bout that slight slip into stream o' consciousness. (After having mastered it, it's now difficult to disengage from it.)

      >>... "We've got a certificate that guarantees removal of bubble gum from the soles of your shoes even on a hot day and hot asphalt."

Naturally, I slightly remember the fuzzy time when you introduced me to Tom Waits via his album 'Small Change', and I can't help wondering if that was a reference to his song [Link> 'Step Right Up'.

      >>..."Now for your other soul....we've got no guarantees. But I understand you have done much work in that department yourself."

Yeah, nearly 30 years of work. All because Muddy fell asleep on the job. I placed him in [Link> the window sill of my second floor apartment building on April 6, 1994, and I told him to bark if he saw Jesus approaching. But Muddy fell asleep and that Guy, Jesus, He's pretty sneaky! Next thing I knew, He was upon me, and He was too strong for me. So I... surrendered. (Beware! Jesus is a very sneaky and very strong Fella! You can't let your guard down for a second! And... you can't trust an inanimate, stuffed guard dog addicted to Diphenhydramine and Temazepam to stay alert and warn you of His approach!)

      >>... "But no, but no, but no!"

Nappy and I say that once or twice a week, at least!

      >>... "In the meantime enjoy that next trip around the sun my good old friend."

Speaking of Sun, and old times... ride this roller coaster and watch for the [Link> "That's where the FUN is!" moment.

      >>... "LTBA!"

Wait! WHAT?! Did you just call me a "They" or a "Them"? Don't make me sic Muddy on ya, punk!

I really thought I'd be rulin' fer the good Doctor again, but I think maybe the kid has earned the title here. After reading the score cards it looks like the kid Lang squeaked out a split decision. Your vote here for Kid Lang over Dr. John may not be quite as shockingly unbelievable as Debbie D'Doglady choosing Waylon Jennings over Deep Purple, but it's still so utterly surprising to me that I would say it falls under the 'Purple Waylon Effect'!

What's going on out there? Is this somehow connected with the United States government's apparent admission that otherworldly discs have crashed and alien bodies been recovered?!

At this point, I'm almost expecting Elvis to turn up alive and working for Uncle Scam out at Area 51. Would that be any stranger than these 'Purple Waylon' votes? I think not!
