Well, I did expect The Eagles' 'HOTEL CALIFORNIA' to win my most recent Battle Of The Bands contest HERE against The Beatles' 'Rocky Raccoon'. However, I also thought it would be a bit closer than it was. Nevertheless, I appreciate each and every one of you who took time to visit 'n' vote!Unfortunately, what surprises me most of all (not really - I believe most people have lost their sense of curiosity) is that no one asked me about the meaning of this dialogue in my 'League Of Soul Crusaders' manuscript:
That shtick came from the Laurel & Hardy movie 'Our Relations'. Click HERE! League members routinely quoted from the greats, such as Laurel and Hardy, W. C. Fields, Monty Python, Benny Hill, Wally George, and Mister R. P. McMurphy!
Aside from the fact that both songs in the contest mentioned a type of booze (gin, wine & champagne), both songs also had a theme that pertained to checking into a rented room. Rocky checked into a hotel room above a saloon and found... "Gideon's Bible". The delusional dreamers checked into the Hotel California and found... they could "never leave!"
Yes, 'Hotel California' - the massive #1 hit by The Eagles - was way overplayed (and probably still is!) But a song *that* famous and *that* good, which happens to mention two types of hooch, just HAD to be included in my BOTB's Battle Of The Booze series. It's definitely a well-crafted song with one of the most melodically memorable electric guitar solos EVER recorded! The song is justifiably considered a Classic.
.
Even so, I like 'Rocky Raccoon' better, although I certainly like The Eagles better than I do The Beatles! I just have too many (hazy) memories associated with that particular Beatles song. Plus, I love the loose rambling style of it (so unlike so much of the overproduced, drugged-out, artsy-fartsy crap The Beatles usually recorded during that same time period); and I really dig the "jig" sections in that tune. Oh, how many times did a hungover D-FensDogG dance in circles to that? God only knows... and He's protly tryin' to erase it from His Memory!
.
FINAL TALLY:
The Beatles = 4 votes
The Eagles = 8 votes
.
So, 'Hotel California' advances to the BOTB Playoffs (to occur at some future time). And I plan to return here again on February 15th with a new musical Battle for your consideration. Until then, may you all be well and...

You have so many memories attached to Rocky Raccoon, I'm not surprised you chose it.☺ Which is why I went with Hotel California! That, and, as you said, "a well-crafted song with one of the most melodically memorable electric guitar solos EVER recorded! The song is justifiably considered a Classic."

DeleteTo me, there was simply no wrong choice in this Battle. I like *both* songs a great deal. 'Hotel California' is not my favorite Eagles song, but it's possibly in the Top 5.
'I Can't Tell You Why' is my favorite Eagles song but... I can't tell you why. Not that I won't. It's that I really can't! I don't understand what it is about that song that has always spoken to me. The melody, the harmonizing -- they're terrific. But there's more to it that I can't quite put my finger on.
I really love 'Take It Easy', too.
The Eagles had a lot of really good stuffs!

You'd think I'd know the dialogue but I did not realize at all, that it came from that famous team. I thought the Eagles would win but I was close to choosing Rocky. Thank goodness for haxy great memories

DeleteWhen we weren't out holding court in one of L.A.'s many bars, The League Of Soul Crusaders watched a lot of old movies and TV stuffs.
W.C. Fields was the official house mascot. Saw many of his movies. L&H, of course. Benny Hill was a hero. Watched a lot of 'Little Rascals' and The 3 Stooges, too. (I always said, "The Three Stooges should be heard and not seen.")
To this day - all these decades later - Judge Al Bondigas and I are still trying to identify some old movie that The League watched one time (circa 1982, '83?) and which made an impression on us. We can't remember the title and I haven't been able to find it mentioned anywhere on the Internet.
But maybe you can identify it for us?
There was some ridiculous song in it that included these lyrics:
"He has the cutest little dinghy in the Navy. Heave-Ho! Heave-Ho!"
I know that sounds like it may have been a porno, but I don't think so. I think it was some sort of goofy musical comedy. However, I've "Giggled" those lyrics several times over the years and come up empty.
Got any idear what it may have been?

Hmmm... I'll keep looking for what movie it was in, but the song was easy to find:

Hey, thanks, SIXER!
DeleteI don't think I ever even found *that* much the last time I looked for this mystery movie. It's been years, but I remember Nappy and I trying to find out something about it and coming up with just a pound of air.

At least the Beatles didn't get the clobbering as the loser in my battle. :) Like you, I cast my vote for the less favorite in mine, too. Thanks for reporting the outcome. I'll do my best to swing by on Thursday. Have a bandtastic week!
ReplyDeleteThanks for checking in on this DogG, CAThy!
DeleteI hope things are looking good on the home front, my Sister!
Incidentally, just for the record (as usual), my next February Battle will have NOTHING to do with Valentines Day. I am the Scrinch of Valentines Day.
("Scrinch?" . . .
Scrooge + Grinch = Scrinch.)
