Shooby-Duh-Dooby-Doop-Dooby-Dooby-Doo-Wah -
Buh-Doo-Wah!

Yes, it's time once again for 'Battle Of The Bands' ('BOTB').

Alright, let's get on it. Let's get ON this thing!...

EUGENE  MARTONE  VS.  JACK  BUTLER

Announcement: If you didn't check out my last BOTB Results post, you can do that HERE. I thought it was a pretty cool blog bit which included the mention of a surprise voter in my last Battle as well as a list of my 5 Favorite Guitarists of all time (or, Two Dannys, Two Garys, and a Pat). Check it out when you're done voting here or else you're just a big Poo-Poo Head!

GOODNIKS  VS.  NO-GOODNIKS

Wackypedia sez:
"You Don't Know Me" is a song written by Cindy Walker based on a title and storyline given to her by Eddy Arnold in 1955. "You Don't Know Me" was first recorded by Arnold that year and released as a single on April 21, 1956 ... The first version of the song to make the Billboard charts was by Jerry Vale in 1956, peaking at #14 ... Arnold's version charted two months later ... [at] #10 on the Billboard country chart.

In his book 'Eddy Arnold: Pioneer of the Nashville Sound', author Michael Streissguth describes how the song came to be:

Cindy Walker, who had supplied Eddy with "Take Me in Your Arms and Hold Me" (a number one country record in 1949), recalled discussing the idea for "You Don't Know Me" with Eddy as she was leaving one of Nashville's annual disc-jockey conventions. "I went up to the Victor suite to tell Steve Sholes good-bye," she explained, "and just as I was leaving, Eddy came in the door."

Walker remembered him saying, "I got a song title for you... 'You Don't Know Me.'"

"But I know you," teased Walker.

"This is serious", replied Eddy, who proceeded to outline his idea.

The songwriter promised to let the idea stew in her head for a while. And soon, she remembered, the lyrics tumbled onto the page. "The song just started singing. It sort of wrote itself..."

The song has become a Pop Standard, having been recorded by a godzillion different singers in a godzillion different ways. I think it was destined to become a Standard because the aching, unrequited love scenario that the song describes seems to be so universal. Is there any man or woman who couldn't at one time or another in their life totally relate to the sentiment of this song?

Because the song was a collaborative effort between a man and woman and because it's something that most of us have felt and suffered through before, I wanted my Battle to pit a male vocalist vs. female vocalist. And my first choices were Kenny Loggins vs. Patti Page.

However, when I learned that our friend JEFFREY SCOTT was returning to rejoin us BOTBers in this round, I decided to celebrate that happy news by featuring his favorite artist, Diana Krall, who recorded the song as a duet with Ray Charles. This Battle is for you, Jeffy! Er... which is NOT to say that I have a secret crush on you. John Wayne!-John Wayne! I am not just a heterosexual, but I am a (link-->) "CONFIDENT heterosexual".

Question: "Will Ray Charles and Diana Krall win this BOTB contest?"
Magic 8 Ball sez: "You may rely on it."

We'll see, we'll see...

Alright now, “you know the gig”... I welcome you (whoever you are) to vote for your favorite of these songs in the comment section below. And feel free to tell us WHY you chose one song over the other.

After voting here, I suggest - actually I insist - you pop over to the blogs of the other 'BATTLE OF THE BANDS' participants to see which songs they have chosen and vote there also. (If their ‘BOTB’ blog bits aren’t posted yet, pour yourself two shots of ‘Grand Marnier’ over ice – do it twice – and then return to their blogs to vice your voice ...vote your vice ...voice your vote.)

  1. I best remember Eddy Arnold's version which is the one I mostly heard in my life. I also remember when Ray Charles came out with his solo version which was good, but I didn't like it as much as Eddy.

In your match today, both were fine in their own ways. However for me the Loggins version dragged which made is seem to last interminably long and maybe a bit overwrought and overly dramatized.

...Then after I woke up I listened to the next version...

The duo picked up the pace better and I just preferred everything about it from pacing, to the instruments, to Krall's vocals (and Ray's vocals though not as much).

Give my vote to Diana Krall and Ray Charles.

There are so many recordings of this song that ALL of us BOTBers could BOTB it a few times each.

OK, Jeffy will be happy that Ray and his girl, Diana, got the lead right out of the starting gate.

  2. THE MAGIC SIX-BALL SEZ: "You may rely upon SBBVI voting AGAINST Krall when given the opportunity"

I love Ray Charles. But his voice on this one was simply not good. I think it was quite near the end of his life and it simply is not what it was in the early sixties. Not nearly in the form it would require to overcome the negatives of his duet partner. I never have like Krall: I think she is vastly overrated (sorry Jeffrey.)

Loggins take on the song is different. I always liked Loggins also (though I liked him best as part of Loggins and Messina), and his version clicks all "Loggin's boxes." I'm nobody's fool: I'm voting Loggins.

    1. Well, consarn it all, SBB-6! There goes the shutout immediately, in just two votes, but because you disagreed with Lee, that means I'm going to have to agree with one of youz two. Don't we hate it when that happens!

The MAGIC 6 BALL is never wrong. Does the MAGIC 8 BALL occasionally give false readings? "You may rely on it."

It'll be interesting to see if the Canadians are able to play both videos this time. Thanks again for your help with that.

Not a counterfeit one like some presidents are prone to use. Anyway, I never thought I could ever rule agin the Chazz man, but, Loggins is absolutely wonderful with his recording. Can you say deep, passionate and emotional? You gave me the Loggins CD I own didn't you? Just so you know I play that quite a bit, I even have it on my phone from Spotify and play it a lot when working out at the gym Good stuffs indeed. Anyway, I'm going long here, so my rulin' is fer Loggins. That's it!! That's my rulin'.

  4. Once again you have exposed the shallowness of my musical knowledge. Great song and two great renditions. I vote for BOTH. Nope, that would be a wasted vote. I’m sure “BOTH” doesn’t know what Aleppo is either.

So I’ll go with the Magic 8 ball on this one. The tag team of Ray and Diana just edged out KL’s version. Even though KL’s version did fill the empty space between the headphones nicely, Ray’s familiar voice is too hard for me to vote against.

Man, I hope after Ray Charles reads this he stops by the comment section to say “hey”.

Well, at least a vote for Dopey Johnson isn't a vote for Crooked Clinton. I applaud you for that.

Alright, seriously... I've known for a long time (the mid-1990s) that a vote for a Republican or a Democrat is quite literally a vote for Revelation 13:11-18.

    1. Thanks, CATHY. And Kenny thanks you too, because he was seriously in need of a vote right about now. He's in danger (zone) of losing this thing to a dead guy and a vanilla milkshake.

  17. Time to comment, so you’ll stop teasing, I mean nudging me, to do so.

I like this song. I shouldn’t, but I do. Why shouldn’t I, you want to know. Ok, I’ll tell you. More than one close friend suggested it should be my theme song. It was been known to be thought that most people don’t really know me. Well, that’s probably true and solely my own fault. I tend to not let people know me too well. But, the reality of any given situation is that we only know anyone as far as they are willing to let us. When it comes to matters of the heart, nobody, and I mean almost nobody wants to be the first to confess their feelings. Not so true for me, I do believe you should let people know how you feel. You truly never know that you might not have any more tomorrows, and therefore leave important things unsaid.

OK, that is enough procrastination in casting a vote. This one isn’t hard for me. I like Ray well enough, but some of his duets, not so much, and this is one. He isn’t at his sharpest (of course, even a rather dull Ray is better than a lot of performers out there, who are way too popular) and Mrs. Costello is not one of my favs. On the other hand I do like Kenny quite a bit. I liked him with Messina, and I like him alone. He has one of my all-time favorite ‘road trip’ CD’s, and I’ve driven across lonely northern Nevada more than once belting out tunes with him (as a matter of fact I plan to do that again in the near future).

Just to be perfectly clear. My vote goes to Kenny Loggins. He may be slow on this one, but man oh man does he have ‘heart’.

My 'Magic 10 Ball' Says; if Kenny don't win this is a 'fixed' election for sure.

    1. I only nudged you once, overexaggerator!

Sheesh! Now I gotta find me a Magic 11 Ball before I've even acquired a Magic 9 Ball. (My Magic Ball goes "up to eleven".)

      >>... It was been known to be thought that most people don’t really know me.

I know you very well, obviously. I mean, you know what I mean. You even told me yesterday that I've known you better than anyone else has in a "loooooong time".

      >>... When it comes to matters of the heart, nobody, and I mean almost nobody wants to be the first to confess their feelings.

That's true. Because if the other person doesn't feel the same way, you've just hung yourself out there to dry. But let us celebrate this trait of human nature, for without it, we never would have had the show 'MOONLIGHTING'.

I like Kenny, but I must admit I've never thought of him as "road trip" music. To me he's more like "smoked cheddar cheese and a glass of Claret while watching porn online" music. (Ha! I have no idea how I come up with this stuffs! And who's Claret? Isn't she that Miss Universe murder-scene-getaway-driver whom Killary Clinton is now using to trump Trump?)

I think you're right: this election has been fixed. (Not sure what was wrong with it to begin with though.)

  18. Hi Stephen! This is such a great song, and I really enjoyed both versions. As you predicted, Ray and Diana get my vote. Now I feel like slow dancing, but it's almost 2 a.m. Next time, I'll try to tune in earlier. I'm looking forward to the 15th, but I don't want to spoil the surprise here. I'll probably be the one who's surprised in the end!

      Thanks for the vote!

No, you won't be surprised (you've got it figured out) but the others will be.

      See ya on the 15th!

  19. Ray and Diana get my vote. 2 awesome musicians beat 1? Perhaps, but their version grabbed me more then Loggins.
