Yes, it's time once again for 'Battle Of The Bands' ('BOTB') 'Battle Of The Whistlers' ('BOTW')

Yep! I've got something completely different for ya this time.

Do all y'all remember October 2015 when I did a BOTB installment where David & David went up against The Red Hot Chili Peppers, and I asked you to cast two votes, one for song and one for video? Well, in that comment section, in response to a poem I had written about Floyd the barber, the lovely GEM JULIE of the blog 'Empty Nest Insider' wrote the following:

Stephen, My vote for the song goes to Chili Peppers and David & David for the video. I agree with Robin that the long-haired, shirtless guy was too much. Maybe you and I can do a BOTW, Battle of the Whistlers. I still can't get the Andy Griffith song out of my head.

And I replied...

BOTW - Hokey-Smoke and Hoo-Wee! I love that idea, Julie! LOVE IT! Someday I may have to do a BOTW post, using different songs with good whistling in them. That's a GEM of an idea, JULIE. Thanks for mentioning it!

Well, guess what, Peoples! It took one year and two weeks (my world rotates very slowly) but... TODAY IS THE DAY! A-List, E-Ticket thanks and kudos to Gem Julie for the idea. I think this one's gonna be a hoot!

I immediately had 3 different tunes pop into my mind, but just in case there was something else out there that I might not have thought of and would want to use, I visited several website lists of songs with prominent whistling. However, in the end, I decided to stick with the 3 that occurred to me on my own. (Always go with your first impression.)

I'm NOT necessarily asking you to vote for the recording with the BEST whistling. I AM simply asking you to vote for the tune / song you like best, for whatever reason, whether you think it has the best whistling or not.

Alright, let's get on it. Let's get ON this thing!...

ALWAYS LOOK ON THE BRIGHT SIDE OF LIFE

.
It seemed to me that these tunes were distinctly different in terms of mood, and therefore how a person voted might indicate their personality type.

The River Kwai March: You are classically, stylishly sharp and dignified.

The Fishin' Hole: You are casually fun and free-spirited.

Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life: You are edgy with a slightly warped sense of humor.

But always in matters of great importance I double-check my beliefs with the Magic 8 Ball...

Question: "Does a person's vote between these three tunes render a scientifically accurate assessment of their personality type?"

Magic 8 Ball sez: "You may rely on it."

Alright now, “you know the gig”... I welcome you (whoever you are) to vote for your favorite of these songs in the comment section below. And feel free to tell us WHY you chose one song over the other.

After voting here, I suggest - actually I insist - you pop over to the blogs of the other 'BATTLE OF THE BANDS' participants to see which songs they have chosen and vote there also. (If their ‘BOTB’ blog bits aren’t posted yet, pour yourself two shots of ‘Grand Marnier’ over ice – do it twice – and then return to their blogs to vice your voice ...vote your vice ...voice your vote.)

  1. No fair! No fair! Each of these three songs have a special place in my heart. How is it that you're going to force me to pick just one?

First Off.. The River Kwai March. We had our own special version of the song. You may have heard it as well. As kids we drove everybody nuts singing this all day long!
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BcDQ99N0-Ds

And who doesn't have fond memories of watching little Richie Cunningham walking down to the the fishing hole with Don Knott's boss? Watched that show like a fiend back in the day!

But you stole my heart with Life of Brian. I cannot even begin to tell you about the special significance of this song in my life. Okay, you twisted my arm... I'll try. My oldest brother, who was my favorite brother, had this as his ringback tone on his cell. My brother fought a good hard battle against cancer, but he was always so very cheerful. I'd be the one having the hard days and every time I'd give him a call, I'd hear that song and it lifted my spirits. We played this song at his funeral. (fun fact: This song is quickly becoming a popular favorite at funerals)
I even created a dedicatory video with the music in the background. If you're curious: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XH2niob7rtw

So now, do I choose the goofy moments as a child, the fond memories of a show, or the song with deep rooted meaning in my life. I guess when I put it all out there like that, the decision isn't that difficult.

Magic 8 ball sez: Monty Python for the win!

'scuze me now while I make arrangements with a therapist to sort out these emotions.

I do vaguely remember that Comet / Kwai parody.

And I agree with FAE that the video tribute was wonderful! (At the 20-second mark, your brother on the far right looks EXACTLY like my own brother, Napoleon, looked at that age. Not kidding, if someone showed me that picture minus the rest of the kids, I would swear it was Nappy!)

      Great comment, Mary!

This is a really tough call. I liked the River Kwai one because it reminded me of my Dad. He probably would've chosen this one, I'm sure.
Although maybe not. We used to watch the Andy Griffith Show all the time when I was a kid and who doesn't love that theme song? I also love Always Look on the Bright Side of Life -- it's theme is eerily on target for me right now...Ironically, that version just made me cry!

So I'm going back to listen to all three. Stand by...
Okay, it's definitely Monty Python's Bright Side. Yeah, definitely that one.
(Andy Griffith came in as a close second)...

    Fantastically fun battle Stephen!

I also spent countless hours as a kid watching TAGS with my Pa. He loved that show and turned us all on to it. To this day, it's still my all-time favorite and I own, on DVD, every single black & white episode.

This Battle was put together before I learned about your Dad having passed on. I scheduled it to post at 12:33 AM, and when I saw it here in the morning after I got up and made a cup of coffee, it occurred to me that 'Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life' might be uncomfortable for you.

Had I known in advance what your situation was going to be, I'm sure I would have put this Battle on 'Hold' until sometime later.

But I'm glad you enjoyed it anyway, and were even able to vote for Monty Python, given the circumstances.

  5. Some time ago--years maybe--I did a post on earworms and "River Kwai" was my number 1 choice. To this day that song remains a bane in my existence. I love the film and I guess something within me must like the song since I probably whistle it nearly every day. It's so annoying.

    "Bright Side" is fun.

The one that I enjoy hearing the most is the "Andy Griffith Theme". Great show with a nice little ditty that always brings me cheer.

"Casually fun and free-spirited" is a kind of accurate description of me though a lot of people with whom I come in contact wouldn't think that.

Yeah, that 'River Kwai' tune is earworm-catchy. Actually, for me, so is the TAGS theme.

I think my WORST case of "earworm" comes from 'My Favorite Things' during the Christmas season. GAH! I drive myself crazy whistling and humming that melody for days, even weeks on end!

  6. I’ve listened to these three tunes more than once. While all three are really very catchy and put a bounce in yer step (even though I’m currently sitting down), each carries different connotations with it. I really like the song from ‘The Bridge on the Rive Kwai’, I like the movie also, it’s (the song) upbeat and bouncy, but when I hear it I think about the movie (not really what one would call upbeat), which I find to be a rather sad tale.

“Always Look on the Bright Side of Life’, likewise. It seems every time this song is used it’s meant more as a satire than a cheerful tune. Having said that, I DO try to always look on the bright side of death. After all, it’s just the next adventure.

Finally we come to the theme from The Andy Griffith Show (TAGS), it’s bouncy, catchy, and a whole lot of fun. It brings to mind a simpler time in a simpler place. A time when you could trust people and really knew your neighbors. Basically a happier time, IMO.

So, I’m gonna vote for the Theme from TAGS. And hope I still have a few surprises left in me.

Ha! Alright, you got me on this one. I think my guess for you would have been 'The River Kwai March'.

I didn't realize you liked the TAGS melody so much. It's so jaunty and fun to whistle along to. I got really good at whistling that one. I was always whistling it in the house. Then one day, Brother Nappy yelled at me: "KNOCK THAT OFF! Every time you start whistling that I run into the living room thinking an episode is starting on TV!"

I guess you could say I completely mastered that tune when even Nappy couldn't tell the difference between me and the real thing!

The best remedy for that is 18 Mojitos and just stay up partying all night. Sleep? Fuhgeddaboudit!

Wow! A couple decades ago, during Christmastime, I had one night where the Andy Williams song 'IT'S THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR' was stuck in my mind so freakin' badly that I LITERALLY did not get a single minute of sleep! It just kept playing like on a tape loop and I COULD NOT stop it. I love that song, but that was HORRIBLE! I still remember it decades later because it was one of the worst nights of my entire life!

  10. This is a fantastic battle, as everyone has said. Kwai is one EXCELLENT movie, and the song is as essential a part of it as, well... the jungle. The Andy Griffith Show is your favorite show, and I always loved it too, though not as much as you did/do. The whistling opening is an INSTANTLY recognizable nostalgia trigger to every American between 55-65. The Python tune is NOT ingrained into our souls in the same fashion as the other two, and I frankly doubt it ever will be.

    However, I like it best.

It's been fun for me trying to guess beforehand how the regulars will vote. However, honestly, my success rate has not been good. For example: I had you and Lee BOTH pegged as 'River Kwai' voters. How good were those guesses? You went with MP and Lee went with TAGS.

  11. Hi Stephen, You've outdone yourself again! I'm honored that you remembered our conversation last year, and thought to include me in your fun BOTB theme. I've always enjoyed whistling, and was deeply saddened when wearing braces temporarily took away one of my only talents. But you've made this very difficult with three excellent choices, and I love your descriptions of people based on each selection. You know I love the Andy Griffith Show, but the River Kwai March and Always Look On The Bright Side of Life are also classics. As I get older, I have a new appreciation of the Monty Python song, and I did feel a spring in my step as I whistled along with it. I also fancy myself "edgy with a slightly warped sense of humor," so Monty wins over Andy, but only by a single Fife bullet. Thanks again for including me in the fun, Stephen!

  13. Oh, this is a fun battle! One of your best, in my humble opinion.

The Andy Griffith Show is just plain iconic. When I hear the first few notes of that whistlin' feelgood tune, Opie is in my head. Make me want to go fishin' with Pa (though my Pa woulda never gone fishin'...he was more of the fighting in the streets Scotsman type). My childhood is full of memories of watching Andy, Aunt Bea, Opie, Gomer...love it.

Monty Python, in all of its forms, topped the list of laugh inducing pleasures -- but Life of Brian bothered me a bit. The image of the three guys singing while crucified went too far for me.

Bridge on the River Kwai...fantastic movie. The image of all the guys marching, tattered clothing, floppy shoes...a whistled testament of human endurance. WOW. That one gets my vote today.

    Tough decision! Great battle.

  15. The latest polls have TAGS ahead by a few percentage points but all respondents polled were or had been residents of Mayberry.

I remember Father Langley from St. Joes church banging on the pulpit demanding that his parishioners not see "Life of Brian'. You could have heard a pin drop in that place. He should have looked on the bright side of life more often. I think they were just running a little low on the sacramental wine. Still kind of hilarious to me now. The only funnier church memory was when my mom went to genuflect before stepping into the pew and bump her ass on the pew behind her and wound up on all fours in the middle of the aisle. Ha...Jocularity, Jocularity! (God bless her. She'd do anything to make us laugh in church.)

Here's the thing about whistling. It's happy. It should be honestly happy. There is an honesty in whistling. It comes from the genuinely happy place inside. The River Kwai sounds happy, but that is not happy. Monty Python is twisted happy. Sadly, this feels more like my life than anything else you're offering, but it isn't real, but it's why I like it. Twisted happy. That is so damn sad. The Andy Griffith Show is genuine happy.

So, dad and I will vote for Andy. Yes, I know that is really just one vote since he's moved on to Mayberry In The Sky.

I guess THE POOH didn't want to accidentally drop a weight on his throat and crush it the next time he works out.

    2. I don't think 12.5 lbs. would do too much damage, but, I see what your getting at.

    4. Hey!!! Who you talkin about? Just cuz I chose Andy Griffith over Monty Python, you think I sold out? The Holy Grail was a much better movie than the Meaning of Life, and quite honestly I thought it was a bit of a silly song. Now if it were the choice between "Throw out your dead! and someone a whistlin' I would have been all over that Monty Python choice. You see, I too have good memories of growing up, or failing to do so, with Andy, Opie, Barney, Otis, and the rest of the gang (before Mayberry RFD of course). A man can have an opinion, if that's okay with you of course, can't he? And it was at least 12.5 lbs is an insult, it had to be at least 13.

    5. Well, maybe I was a little out of line. A LITTLE. But, not about the weight.

You forgot to mention 'BRAVE SIR ROBIN'. Where would that figger in in your figgerin'?

What do you vote for, 'BRAVE SIR ROBIN' or a 'DODGER DOG'?

  22. Hi Stephen T - As you may have already guessed, I'm voting for the TAGS theme! So many fond memories of the show and the way of life in small town America in the 50s and early 60s, which I was so fortunate to enjoy as a young girl in my maternal grandparents' home town...Greenfield, Iowa! Sa-Lute!...Oh, that's from Hee Haw, isn't it?! Ha! Anyway, I love Mayberry and I also hope to go to Mayberry in the Sky some day...many years from now! (P.S. I paid attention to the info at the end of the TAGS video, and I can't remember the episode with Cheerio Meredith and Frank Ferguson. Please Help!

Yeah, "Mayberry In The Sky", isn't that a great one? 250 points for Girl Wonder!

Well, Cheerio Meredith and Frank Ferguson were in several episodes -- six for her and five for him -- but I just did a quick search and it looks like the ONE EPISODE they BOTH appeared in was the very first episode: "THE NEW HOUSEKEEPER".

Cheerio played her usual, EMMA Brand (later renamed Emma Watson) and Frank played a character named Wilbur Pine. He later was better known as "MR. FOLEY", the grocer.

Brother Nappy and I both LOVE Emma Watson -- what a great character (and I mean "character" in two ways). And Mr. Foley was featured in what is probably my #1 all-time favorite episode of TAGS: "The Case Of The Punch In The Nose".

There were so many GREAT episodes of TAGS that it's really hard to select just a Top Ten, let alone rank them in any kind of order. But "...Punch In The Nose" is absolutely in my Top Ten, and it might be my favorite because all the characters were just so well highlighted in that episode. And because... Floyd.

  23. Best whistler I've heard is Toots Thielemans, for the record. Not a bad guitar and harmonica player, either.

Without a doubt, "Colonel Bogey's March," from "Bridge on the River Kwai," is one of the most dramatic scenes in movie history, and seeing that column march along whistling the tune brings a tear to my eye. As a song, it's simple, but stirring, what it was meant to be. With all due respect to Earle Hagen, who wrote one of the most memorable TV themes of all time, "The Fishin' Hole," and to the Monty Python gang for writing one of the most perfect endings of a movie in history, I'm sticking with Col. Bogey.

Yep, Toots can toot (on both harmonica and whistler). I first became aware of him via his work with Pat Metheny.

  24. We're here! We're here! I apologize about that. My Magic 8 Ball actually turned into a Magic V8 and took us both soaring down the blacktop (I think Pat Metheny was playing...).

This is probably no surprise, but I vote for dear Andy (even if the stunning Peggy is not accompanying him this time 'round). My cohort votes for the Life of Bryan, which I probably should have voted for, but I think they spelled it wrong. That's okay, though. It's the Internet, and it's been known to be full of shear stupidity.

First of all, if you're going to make an outrageous statement like the Internet is "known to be full of shear stupidity", you must also site your evidence for it!

Pat Metheny & V8 go together like pizza & beer, peanuts & beer, beer & beer. (Bryan & Brandon.)

Remember how you said that at least in a 3-Way Battle you and Other B would be contributing something to the contest when you split your votes? Well... FAIL!

RIVER KWAI is lagging so far behind at this point that this is a two-horse race now. And you Beer Boys are, once again, betting on each horse.

Ha! Oh well, it is what it is (to coin a really dumb, super-obvious expression).

But as the Soup Nazi said:
      "No TAGS for you!"
