Alright, let's get on it. Let's get ON this thing!...
.
EUGENE  MARTONE  VS.  JACK  BUTLER
.
This is my second and final Battle celebrating Jazz month (March 15th through April 14th). Wackypedia sez:
.
The "Song of the Volga Boatmen" (known in Russian as Эй, ухнем! [Ey, ukhnem!, "yo, heave-ho!"], after the refrain) is a well-known traditional Russian song collected by Mily Balakirev, and published in his book of folk songs in 1866. It was sung by burlaks, or barge-haulers, on the Volga River. Balakirev published it with only one verse (the first). The other two verses were added at a later date. The song was popularized by Feodor Chaliapin, and has been a favorite concert piece of bass singers ever since. Glenn Miller's jazz arrangement took the song to #1 in the US charts in 1941.
.
In that case, let's begin with Glenn Miller, shall we? (It doesn't matter whether or not you think we should, because I'm da dictator o' de blog. So learn to love the idea:o)

.

.
GODZILLA  VS.  KING  KONG
.
Next up is Acker Bilk. In case you are unfamiliar with him, Wackypedia sez this:
.
Bernard Stanley "Acker" Bilk was an English clarinettist and vocalist known for his appearance -– goatee, bowler hat and striped waistcoat -– and breathy, vibrato-rich, lower-register clarinet style.
.
Bilk's 1962 instrumental tune "Stranger on the Shore" became the UK's biggest selling single of 1962: it was in the UK charts for more than 50 weeks, peaking at number two, and was the first No. 1 single in the United States by a British artist in the era of the modern Billboard Hot 100 pop chart.
.
His parents tried to teach him the piano but, as a boy, Bilk found it restricted his love of outdoor activities, including football. He lost two front teeth in a school fight and half a finger in a sledging accident, both of which he claimed affected his eventual clarinet style.

.
Now, let's listen to Acker's very spirited rendition which definitely adds a little New Orleans 'Dixieland' touch to the song.
.

RIDDLER  VS.  BATMAN
.
Question: Will Acker Bilk win this Battle?
Magic 8-Ball sez:  "Don't Count On It"
.
Alright now, “you know the gig”... I welcome you (whether I know "you" or not) to vote for your favorite of these songs in the comment section below. And feel free to tell us WHY you chose one song over the other.

After voting here, I suggest - actually I insist - you pop over to the blogs of the other 'BATTLE OF THE BANDS' participants to see which songs they have chosen and vote there also. (If their ‘BOTB’ blog bits aren’t posted yet, pour yourself two shots of ‘Grand Marnier’ over ice – do it twice – and then return to their blogs to vice your voice ...vote your vice ...voice your vote.)

  1. More "cartoon" music. I seem to remember some version of this song being used in a "Popeye" cartoon among others. It's never been a favorite tune of mine. I used to play it on the violin and it kind of depressed me. I guess other people around me also got depressed when I played my violin, but not specifically because of this song.

Of course, the song is much better when put in the hands of professionals like these two groups.

Since the Miller version is the one I've always heard I was pretty certain from the git go that my vote would rest there. He makes it sound like a funeral march, but a lighthearted one.

The Bilk version I'd never heard before, but that one really rocked with flair. I felt like I was in New Orleans in a cartoon. Bilk has got the bounce. And Bilk has got my vote.

One thing I've really liked about my last two BOTB installments is how radically different from each other all of the recordings have been. I like it when the arrangements give the impression that you're almost hearing totally different songs.

  3. Both of these are FAN-tastic! This is one of your best battles ever! Sadly, with Miller involved I don't expect much of contest in terms of vote-count, though. My guess: almost everyone will like both but vote for Miller.

I noticed that the Magic 8-Ball is strangely silent again this time. I think he has run down to the Harrah's Sports book and put all his money on Glenn Miller.

I believe another factor will be that - at least these days - few people care AT ALL for Dixieland Jazz, and you nailed it that that's the flavor of Bilk.

This one was SO close... but without any Ackermony, Bilk bilks Miller outta a vote from me this time.

Hey, I'm really pleased that you dug this Battle so much. One of my best ever? Wow!

This had been on my list to do for a very long time, for some reason, NOW seemed the right time.

I actually think about my Battles like a producer might think about the order of tracks on an album he's putting together. I consider the genre and tempo of songs I've used just before, and which I might use next, and I try to put something that makes a good transition in between them.

Actually, Acker has a lead at the moment, but it's not so wide that he can't be caught by Glenn. (We shall see if the 8-Ball can redeem himself from the recently shoddy predictions.)

  5. I know this somber tune and loving this rendition by both artists but I give it to Glenn Miller because the other one sounded a bit chaotic to me plus I felt Miller's rendition was a bit danceable.

First of all, thanks for being the one to break up the shutout.

Secondly,... "danceable". YEP! Fo' sho'. I myself can't dance. Can't dance a lick. But a few nights ago I was playing the Miller version and was in my stocking feet and in the kitchen.

My socks slide real good on that linoleum kitchen floor, and suddenly I found myself dancing. Girl, I danced up a storm to that tune. (Not kidding. It started snowing. Guess I was doing a Native American Snow Dance and didn't know it. I do have a bit o' Mohawk in my blood, ya know.)

So, anyway, I thought I was dancin' purdy good to Miller's '...Volga Boatmen'. Praise God that all my window blinds were down and closed so no one's eyes got hurt.

  7. First, I scrolled down too fast and played a song (Bulk, it turns out). It was only as I scrolled back up that I realized I played the second first. Then I read what you wrote and realized I broke the rules according to you. Oops!

Then I saw Magic 8 Ball's prediction. I think I have voted against it last few battles. Hmm.

So, Bilk is playing and I am reading. I get to the part where it says he plays clarinet. That stopped me in my tracks. I played clarinet four years (6-9th grade). My clarinet never sounded like that!

Then I played Glenn Miller. I liked how it started. And it was good. As in Glenn Miller good.

But, I returned to the Ackerman version and played it again. Man, he can swing! I like it!!!

So, true to me, I am voting against Magic 8 Ball. Give me Acker... One more time!

I enjoyed both instrumental arrangements equally well and it's really hard to say I like one more than the other. 9. This, Mr. McCathy Thismis sure one heck of a BATTLE. I love it. You know how I feel about Glenn, and you know that most of sentiment tied to him stems from my childhood on that lake in the Northwoods, where his "Moonlight Serenade was a staple in the ole jukebox. Well, strange as it may seem I also lost my heart to Acker Bilk and his 'licorice stick' when 'Stranger on the Shore' would stream outa that same jukebox. This here is a real conundrum of sentument for little ole me.

After two days of deliberation I'm gonn have to go with (sorry honey, Glenn) Acker. The Glenn Miller version evokes the image of salt and pepper Cossack type Santas tugging that boat up the Erie Canal, while Acker's version gives it that N'orlean flair that makes this dumb blonde love him all the more.

How dar anyone call this cartoon music, unless of course, they'd listening to some pretty high class cartoons.

That was a good tour of downtown if I recall. It has gentrified and they've pushed the "Outdoorsmen" to an areal south of the Nickel. Actually, Outdoorsmen are everywhere now, setting up tents under overpasses throughout the city and the Cops don't do anything anyhow. 15. I like my songs serious, my cartoons cartoony, and my women... women-y. Not really sure where I was going with that, but Acker's version is a little cartoony for me. Not bad, still colorful, but not ideal for me. Besides, you can't top Glenn Miller in my books. Unless those books are about Paul Simon, then go ahead and throw that whole thing out the window.

My cohort, on the other hand, likes the more lively sound of Acker.

As is often the case, we add nothing to this contest but more dead weight, so the vote is split 1 and 1.

  16. STMcC’s Vote On '2017, April 1st: Battle Of The Bands' (Or, 'Glenn Miller Versus Acker Bilk') And The Final Tally:

    Hmmm.....
Another surprising (to me) outcome. I genuinely enjoy BOTH of these recordings. And the 'Dixieland' vibe that Acker Bilk brings to the song reminds me of being in New Orleans Square at Disneyland, as 'Dixieland' music always does. Love it!

BUT... Glenn Miller is my main man and I totally dig what his orchestra does with this tune. As I mentioned in an earlier comment, a day or two before posting this Battle I actually found myself dancing in my kitchen while Glenn's band stomped through this song with an almost funky flair to it.

I'll tell ya the truth, this Battle ends for me at the 2:03 mark of Miller's recording. As soon as the band's hand-clapping begins in conjunction with those horns, this contest is D-O-N-E -- you can stick a fork in it! That is just so appealing to my ears!

Aside from that, when Lee and Sheboyganboy both voted for Acker, it was a foregone conclusion that I'd be voting for Glenn Miller's Orchestra, right?

However, the majority of voters did not hear this Battle the same way I did:

    Glenn Miller = 8 Votes
    Acker Bilk = 9 Votes

Acker Bilk beats Glenn Miller by a single vote.

Thanks, all Y'all, for listenin' 'n' votin', and I hope to see ya back here again on April 15th for my next 'Battle Of The Bands' installment.

    2. Yeah, LEE. I wish Miller had won because I think his recording was actually more interesting (and he's my favorite musician ever) but IMO a one-vote margin of victory is the perfect Battle. (It could only be "perfecter" if it's my choice that wins by one.)

But it was nice to have such a close contest regardless. I'm happy with it.

I'm left wondering if it would have ended in a tie had John voted.
