BOTB RESULTS: 2018, FEB. 15 (Or, VAN MORRISON VS. SLAVIN' DAVID & LOOSE GRAVEL)

.
.
First, I thank each one of you who took the time to listen 'n' bote on my most recent installment of 'Battle Of The Bands' (BOTB). This one was a part of my 'Battle For Los Angeles' series (subcategory: 'The Battle For Dogtown') and it featured songs and artists with a connection to Venice Beach -- a part of "Dogtown".
.
CUTEST DOG EVER, POSING IN "DOGTOWN"
.
Some of you may remember that in my previous Battle of 2/1/2018, featuring Danny Gatton, I wrote this: Circa 1994, Larry, a friend and co-worker of mine -- who also happened to be a guitarist in a local Blues band -- gave me a cassette tape he'd recorded for me. It was titled LITTLE GUITAR DITTIES: "Lelly's Favorites". "Lelly" was a pet name we had given to him at work. [Remember this -- you'll need it later!]
.
Well, it's now "later": Larry Rosen (LarryR), a member of the band Slavin' David & Loose Gravel, who wrote the song 'Walking Down The Right Path', which did battle against Van Morrison's 'Venice, U.S.A.' here, is also the aforementioned "Lelly" who made me aware of Danny Gatton all those years ago! And not only is my friend and former co-worker, Larry one of the "Loose Gravels", but another friend and co-worker, Lonnie Millsap, actually designed the album cover for 'Rock And Roll Road':
.
.
This Battle wasn't much of a battle. In fact, for Van Morrison, it was almost an exact dose of negative karma: In my 10/15/2017 BOTB installment, the song was 'Good Morning, Little School Girl', and Van The Man clobbered Taj Mahal 12-4. In this "contest", Slavin' David & Loose Gravel clobbered Van Morrison 13-4. As you do unto others, it shall be done unto you.
.
My vote also went to David & Gravel. I like Van's 'Venice U.S.A.' well enough as a rather vague but upbeat "mood piece", such as Van sometimes likes to do, but I much preferred the Spiritual message and loose, gravelly guitar work provided by my buddy LarryR in 'Walking Down The Right Path'.
.
A few voters commented that they felt Van's song was a bit too long. I concur, and so did Patrick Humphries:
.
'The Omnibus Press Guide To The Music Of Van Morrison' by Patrick Humphries (1997): It is when Van gets riffing that 'Wavelength' kicks up a gear. As a straightforward story, 'Venice USA' wouldn't detain the casual listener long, but Van manages to infuse it with genuine buoyancy, even if it does eventually overstay its welcome by a couple minutes. The melody combined with Van's scat singing help the song gain momentum...
.
That pretty well nails 'Venice, U.S.A.'. It really is one of the most "buoyant" songs I've ever heard, but also drags on a bit too long.

.
4 1/2 years of BOTB has taught me that trying to create a competitive Battle is much closer to a hit or miss art form than it is a science. There are a number of possibilities to consider and evaluate, and not-always-easy decisions that a BOTBer must make.
.
Usually, I try to keep a very even BOTB playing field, but sometimes I'll agonize over angles and nuance. For example: In this Battle, I figured that due to his worldwide fame, Van Morrison would have a subconscious advantage over the mostly unknown Slavin' David. The video I really WANTED to use for 'Venice, U.S.A.' made the song seem even more buoyant and likeable, and diminished the sense that it was overlong. And I felt that Van probably already had too much of an upper hand right from the get-go.
.
Unless specifically asked to do so, voters are expected NOT to let the images in a video influence how they vote on the music. But I think it probably occurs sometimes regardless, due to human nature. So, rather than risk giving Van a double-advantage in the Battle, I decided to use a video for him that matched the static image video I was using for Slavin' David.
.
But now with 20/20 hindsight, seeing how badly Van got slaughtered, I find I'm second-guessing myself and thinking this might have been a much more competitive BOTB installment had I used the video for 'Venice, U.S.A.' that I really like.
.
If you can, watch the following video, listen to Van's song again, and tell me if you think your vote for Slavin' David & Loose Gravel might have gone to Van The Man had I used the following video instead of the one I did. I definitely think that 'Venice, U.S.A.' works better as a soundtrack for appropriately themed images than it does as a stand-alone song.
.
And, for those of you who perhaps have never experienced Venice Beach, California, this video gives you a terrific idea of what a typical Summer day there looks like. It will also give you glimpses of the turbaned guitar player, Harry Perry, and the Sidewalk Café & Bar, which I specifically mentioned on the Battle page HERE.

I thank you all again for indulging me with your patience, time and votes (or "botes", as Julio sez). Because February is such a short month, I will be returning here with a NEW BOTB installment in just 8 days from today. I don't know yet which song I'll be using, but I've got a list 8 miles long to choose from.

  1. YAY! Congrats to Slavin David & The Loose Gravel. I finally voted for the winner - even if I was slightly buzzed from my friend Jack. My apologies for screwin' up the name beforehand. I blame Jack for that.

Me thinks you put together some mighty fine battles, and they are the kind that makes one really think about the music. Every once in a while you're gonna face some raspberries, but overall, You da best!

2/15/2018 BOTB: Hometown boy makes good! Yay!

I was actually HOPING that Slavin' David & Loose Gravel would win this Battle. But I deliberately did not reveal the fact that LarryR, the songwriter and guitarist on 'Walking Down The Right Path', was a personal friend of mine because I didn't want that to possibly sway votes in his favor. I wanted a straight-up fair contest.

It says quite a bit for SD&LG that they not only beat the legendary "Van The Man" but trounced him bigly!

Never, ever apologize for things that Jack makes you do. Because if YOU start apologizing, then I'll have to also, and I don't have enough time for that much apologizin'.

I thank ya for the kind words, Mary!

Now, let's see if I can come up with something a bit more competitive for March 1st.

  2. I am glad your friend won! Well, Slavin David:) I would not be so tied up if the battles go one way or the other in a big way because the main part, at least for me, is to have fun and see what people like. Keep these battles coming:)

    1. Thanks, BIRGIT, I will. Another in just 6 days!

I admit that I don't like blowouts, since I AM trying to put Battles together that will be as close as possible. But I'd take a blowout any day over a shutout, and over most ties, too.

Thanks for always being here, Birgit! I appreciate ya.

  3. Well, what about that. The video wouldn't have affected my vote cause it's still the same song.

I didn't expect the imbalance in voting, but I had a feeling that Loose Gravel would win.

    "Dumb ditty dumb dumb..."

I do like Van's song too though.

I honestly thought SD&LG had a real good chance to win this Battle. I probably would have guessed 55-45% advantage Van.

I like Van's song, too. At least until it seems too long. It's very rare for me to use a song in BOTB that I don't personally like at least to some degree.

  4. Good battle. It's not the score at the end so much as it's wondering what's going to happen at the beginning and seeing the results unfold. I voted for Venice, USA not because of knowing Van Morrison only from one song of his I know - the 8/10 Brown Eyed Girl. It's no masterpiece like Brandy by Looking Glass, by jimmy. The video you have here does add to Venice, USA. If I saw that earlier I would have voted for it two or three times from different precincts - I don't know how to do that but would have asked a Democrat and found out. It's like Randy Newman's "I Love LA" made better by the video and/or the playing at Lakers games. The associations make it better. Then again all songs hit because of associations even with first time hearing. In the previous summary you mentioned "Dogtown coming up" which led to anticipation. Now with no clues at all ("Now, let's see if I can come up with something a bit more competitive for March 1st") leads to... anticipation. Your "BOTBs" are chock full of thoughtful.

Thanks for coming back by to see the results and leave a comment. Thank ya, Brother!

Cool! You're saying that the BOTB joy is in the journey, not necessarily in the final destination. I like that! I'm going to think of BOTB more that way now.

Whoa! You only knew one Van Morrison song? Funny you say that, because I read one of your recent posts and intended to return with a link to a Van Morrison song. I will DEFINITELY get over there and do that ASAP!

      >>... If I saw that earlier I would have voted for it two or three times from different precincts - I don't know how to do that but would have asked a Democrat and found out.

GOL!! -- Guffaw-Out-Loud!! Thanks, man, that was literally the best laugh I've had so far today. :^D

  5. I watched the Van vid per your request, and I think you made a good decision to NOT use the better Van Morrison video. I would not have changed my vote, HOWEVER: Van's song to me is much easier to wade through and its tremendous length is less noticeable when attention is focused on, say, beach babes at sunset wearing thongs. I liked it much more in this vid. I don't know fur sure, dude, but images of crazy Venice MIGHT have swayed someone's bote.

Instead... both vids you showed us allowed us to concentrate on the music and to vote correctly for SD&LG featuring Lelly.

Hey, very kind of you to watch the video and consider it, Brother!

You know, I was giving it some more thought and came to the exact same conclusion you did.

I don't think the video could have won Van the Battle, but I do think it could have won him a few more votes.

If, for example, anyone who voted for SD&LG for the sole reason that Van's song was a bit too long, might not have even noticed that in watching the video, and thus have voted differently.

Plus, the goal has always been to try to put both songs on a totally even playing field and let them battle it out HONESTLY. As soon as I make a decision meant to aid one competitor a shade, for the sake of a closer result, it would transgress the true spirit of BOTB.

Thanks again, Sixgunboy! I have always appreciated your participation. My blogging life would not have been nearly as fun without ya in it!
