2018, JUNE 1: BATTLE OF THE BANDS (Or, BROADWAY HAIR VS. HOLLYWOOD HAIR)

.
Tie Vs. Tie-Dyed, Suit Vs. Freak, Pot Vs. Pigs, Acid Vs. Magic Mushrooms, Counter-Culture Vs. "The Man", Batman & Robin Vs. Catwoman & Lesley Gore, Sergeant Standanko Vs. The Boys & Girls Of Our Lady Of 115th Street, Cheech y Chong Vs. My Mom y Dad, and so on and so forth...
.
'BATTLE OF THE BANDS' ('BOTB')
.
.
DIG IT! It's "The Summer Of Love, 2.0" and time for 'Battle Of The Bands' ('BOTB'). WHAT IT IS, WHAT IT IS!
.
FAR OUT! GROOVY! Alright, let's get on it. Let's get RIGHT ON(!) this thing...
.
.
When the idea of doing regular "Battle Of The Bands" blog installments first occurred to me nearly 5 years ago, I immediately began compiling a list of songs to be used in future Battles. Believe it or not, the 7th song I wrote on that list was 'GOOD MORNING, STARSHINE', a composition from the 1968 Broadway musical 'HAIR', which was a #3 Billboard hit for Oliver in '69.
.
.
I used a song from 'HAIR' in the hoary past: My 4th BOTB installment in 2013 featured the song 'EASY TO BE HARD', and I used the Original Broadway Cast recording against the recording from Hollywood's movie version of the play. (At that time, there were only 3 BOTBers, and Hollywood beat Broadway 6-5.)
.
So, if using HAIR's famous 'Good Morning, Starshine' was one of the very earliest BOTB song ideas I ever had, why am I only just now gettin' 'round to it?...
.
.
.
.
The Red Dog Saloon[link> Where Rock Music And Psychedelic Drugs First Met Onstage.
.
I agonized over this Battle like no Battle I've previously presented these past 5 years of BOTB. There were so many recording choices and I just couldn't find that match-up that instantly "clicked" in my mind, giving me that "Eureka! I have found it!" feeling which I always experience when I know I've struck the right artist combination.
.
I mean, seriously, I could have put Roger Whittaker up against The Strawberry Alarm Clock. I could have put John Denver up against Gary Lewis & The Playboys. I could have used Andy Williams & The Osmond Brothers against Bob McGrath & The Muppets. Talk about "BAd ACiD TRiPs"!
.
.
'GOOD MORNING, STARSHINE' sent me through an endless maze of confusing possibilities -- none of which seemed (as Goldilocks would say) "Just right". So, I finally threw up my hands (which is horribly hard on one's throat!) and said... well... "Screw it!... I'm just going with Broadway versus Hollywood -- exactly like I did with the song 'Easy To Be Hard' in 2013!"
.
And so that's what you're getting, whether you like it or not -- and regardless of the fact that the two versions are pretty similar. Nuance is going to play a big factor in your decision of who to vote for in this Battle. Concentrate now. (Or as Pooh Bear would say: "Think!... Think!... Think!...") The vocalists are different, the tempos and musical backing are slightly different, too. How do you evaluate those things? Overall, which version do you prefer, and why?

NOTE: In my Results post for this Battle on June 7th, I will tell you a very FUN FACT about how, by a weird coincidence, The 5th Dimension scored their biggest song ever and first #1 Billboard hit, 'Aquarius', in 1969. So, don't forget to return here on the 7th. (I'll be at the Red Dog Saloon in Virginia City on the 7th, but will respond to your comments ASAP.)

  1. Stephen,

I changed my mind. I'm doing BoTB this time around. I couldn't take the brow beating and threat of being yakked from the list. Nah....that's not the reason. I'm just pullin' your leg ole friend. My OCD side (or maybe it's because I'm a woman...you know the whole changing the mind constantly thingy) kept looking at my battle sitting in drafts and I just couldn't leave it there all summer, so I finished it up yesterday. :)

Well...when I looked at the two competing artists for this song I was pretty sure I'd go with Hair but in truth, I prefer the Original Broadway Cast's rendition. So, give OBC my vote! Now, I'm feelin' kinda groovy! Have a good weekend, dear friend!!

Sorry I'm so late in responding. It's been a rough couple of days. I'm hoping tomorrow I'll feel more like myself. (With luck, maybe even someone better'n myself!!)

I was happy to have you participate in BOTB this round, despite your earlier pronouncement that you wouldn't be. You know, "The More The Scarier!"

  2. I was just watching a TV story about the Hair revival on Broadway. I used to listen the heck out of that Broadway cast album. Music of another day and another state of mind.

As far as the two versions I'm going to have to give my vote to the original cast album version. The Hollywood version is slicker sounding and certainly good, but the original has a certain charm that fits the spirit of the song better.

    Broadway for me.

One of the recordings of this song that I was also considering using was The NEW Broadway Recording.

One of the many match-ups I contemplated at one point was this Original Broadway Cast recording I have used, against the newer one, here:

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=paMdd65jnHA

Then I decided I didn't really care for that match-up either and I went back to the drawing board... for about the 20th time.

As I said in the blog bit, this current match-up I'm officially using came about simply because I finally just GAVE UP.

I wanted to use the song, and after 5 years of on again / off again pairing up versions against each other, I finally just went back to the very first match-up I'd considered in 2013. I just didn't much care anymore which two versions I put together.

  3. Good day, Stephen; That was an interesting battle! Without hesitation, my vote goes to the original Broadway cast. I found the increased tempo and vocals of the Hollywood version offputting. The original recording sounded much better to my ears and the trumpet was a great touch as well. ☺

I appreciate you coming by and contributing your two groovy cents! Thank you!

This Battle (using that word very loosely) is a total blowout. But in my Results post I am going to include a video which uses the Hollywood version of this song as background music, and I'd be curious to see if you still feel that its increased tempo is off-putting. I'm guessing that it will change EVERYONE'S perception of the Hollywood version of the song.

Such an interesting pick for your battle. The Hollyweird cast sounded 'too' produced, and the Broadway cast sounded authentic.

I'm going to have to cast my vote for the Broadway cast. Their rendition was quite a bit more enjoyable.

    Here's hoping you don't have a shutout!

  5. This was an easy one. The Broadway version is better. I've heard it before so perhaps my ears were trained for it. Still, it's simply better. So much better that the Hollywood version need not be put down. Okay, the Hollywood version seems pretentious and self conscious which the Broadway version doesn't even think about.

On its own the Hollywood version is good. (A-) In contrast to the major league Broadways... "good effort" "good swing" one shouts to the Hollywood batters who strike out with a gallant effort.

The Amazing Sixwell is on the ball, 3-2 and in the game.

    1. Hey, McG DOGG, thanks for taking the time to stop by, listen, and vote, Brother!

I really did NOT think this Battle would seem so easy for so many. I did believe that the Original Broadway Cast version probably had to be considered the favorite going in, and Hollywood the underdog, but I also did think it would be competitive. WRONG!!

Even after 5 years, BOTB can be full of surprises for me.

Yes, Sir, it's unmistakably clear that THE AMAZING SIXWELL is going to get his first win against the 8-Ball in this round, and that will put him right back into the game.

After an unprecedented 4 straight wins, the 8-Ball finally blew one bigly!

  6. Hiya Stephen,
Happy Friday. What? It's Friday again already?? Where the hell did my week go?? aarrrgh. I can't keep up...

Anyway, although I'm not doing battles on the 1st of each month I wanted to take a little bit of time and go around to visit the early month battles.
This is a fun song. And it takes me back for sure. Just reading the versions you cast against each other, I assumed I'd be going with the Hollywood version. Don't ask me why, I just figured I'd be voting that way. But nope, I"m going with the Original Broadway Cast. I like that version so much more. The other just seems to be...lacking. The Original Broadway Cast version is rich and filled with vibrancy. And that trumpet is pretty cool too... So my vote goes to OBC.

On another note, remember I asked about those rock encyclopedias that you and Lee were chatting about just a little ways back? Well I went ahead and ordered both from amazon. Used, of course. Unless I really want a brand-spanking new book for some reason I almost always order Used books. I've always had really good luck with it. Except this time around:
The Rock Critics Choice - Top 200 Albums guide arrived and it's fine. Page edges a little yellowed with age but otherwise in very good shape.
Then a few days later I got the email that the other had been delivered (Lillian Roxon's Rock Encyclopedia). I looked out my front door: nothing. I went to the mailbox: nothing. Hmm, okay, where is it? So I go sign on to amazon to check out the tracking. It was delivered alright...but to someone in SOUTH CAROLINA!!! WTH?? How does one get SC and TX confused??
I sent an email to the seller (Katie's Book Store) and received a prompt reply with an apology and explanation that although it rarely happens, there had been a mistake and my book was mis-delivered. Unfortunately that was the only copy they had so I got a refund.
I don't even know if I'm going to bother re-ordering it from another vendor. I might look around for some newer rock encyclopedias... Though I was looking forward to having that one from 1969...

Hope you're doing something fun for the weekend. talk soon,

Yeah, I like the inclusion of the trumpet in the Original recording as well. Trumpet is NEVER the wrong instrument to add, IMO.

A close battle again. I think Mamma Cass had a version I like better. Now I know how they spelled nooby abba nabba not to be confused with twinkie nappy biddy. I will go with the original broadway cast on this one. The Hollywood version sounded a bit flat to me. Enjoy Virginia City and say hello to the bartender at Buck of Blood for me.

Yeah, a road trip sounds like a great way to kill a few weeks. I'll be back in Phoenix by then, so we'll start there. Where we goin'? ...Ahh, never mind. Sorry. Stupid question. Where we're going is irrelevant. It was always the "going" that mattered, not the "where".

  9. Well, if groove is a measurable quality, I'm going to have to cast my vote for the Broadway production. It just oozes more in the groove department. I was almost inclined to vote based on personal connections. I don't make this up. I had a band in the early 2000's with Tadg Galleran. Tadg was an original member of the Hollywood cast. My sister Janice was an understudy for the off broadway production. My vote could have swayed either way. But I stuck to the music angle only, thus giving the nod to the Broadway recording.

Hey, thanks for coming by and tossing your $0.02 into the pot. (When I get enough two centses, I'm gonna buy a bunch of food and throw a big fish fry. And you'll be the featured Blues artist hired for entertainment.)

I own the movie HAIR and was curious what part Tadg played, so I looked it up at IMDB (International Movie Data Base) but didn't find a listing for him. I did, however, find him listed as a keyboardist in a movie titled 'Memphis Rising: Elvis Returns'.

But then IMDB isn't entirely reliable, as I recently discovered. To my own surprise, that site says I was born in Brooklyn and died in Los Angeles in 1989 at the age of 63.

When we were working together at UCLA in 1989, were you aware that the night shift CDR was a dead man? I looked pretty good for a dead guy, didn't I? Put a man in cowboy boots and a Stetson on his head and you can't tell whether he's alive or not. (Heck, even Jack Palance had already been dead for years when he played the part of Curly in 'City Slickers'!)

You dun goot to stick with the "music angle" in your vote. Anything else don't count unless the BOTBer says it can.

I could have used a certain video for the Hollywood version of this song that I feel certain would have caused it to win this Battle. But I wanted this Battle to be solely about the music, so I deliberately made sure to choose videos with static images ONLY.

In my Results post for this Battle, I am going to include the video I could have used, and let people decide for themselves if they think they might have voted differently had I allowed images to subconsciously mess with their thinking.

Thanks again, Brother. Got your E and will r-E-ply to that later today.

This Battle surely is not going the way I expected. Yeah, I thought Broadway would quite possibly win this one (after having lost to Hollywood in my first 'Hair' BOTB in 2013), but I sure didn't expect lopsided voting like this has been.

However, I KNEW there had to be a contrarian voice in the wilderness that was going to come along eventually and bust up this shutout. And, honestly, I suspected that YOURS might be that voice.

      OK, the shutout is over.

I totally agree with you that Oliver recorded the best version of this song. It's no surprise to me that he had a #3 hit with it. And, of course, that is PRECISELY why I would NOT have included him in this Battle. The shutout I nearly had here probably would have indeed continued until the voting concluded had I let Oliver play in this contest.

Now that Birgit has broken through the wall, perhaps Hollywood Hair will start to make a little noise. (This makes two votes in a row for them, after 3 full days of being completely shut out -- which I found mystifying!)

      OK, on a serious note:

I think perhaps I've figured out what the discrepancy is. 'HAIR' was first an Off-Broadway play in 1967. It opened on Broadway in '68.

The Hollywood film version was released to theatres in 1979.

So, where it is stated that Tadg was an original cast member in 1970, it must be referring to a Los Angeles stage production of 'Hair'. That explains why he doesn't show up at IMDB for the 1979 movie.

But for reals, Hollywood. Maybe the sound quality was just better, but it was easier to listen to. Maybe I'm just tired tonight. I really need a cookie!

I'm surprised you did not pull up The Beatles and Lucy In The Sky to get that psychedelic sound.

    1. OH, DONNA! OH, OH, DONNA!!...

      {*See what I did there?*}

Thanks so much for taking the time to come by, listen, and vote. I sincerely appreciate it! (It makes BOTB so much better when people vote on 'em!) You rock, Wild Thing!

      >>... "West coast every time, lol."

So you're a Best Coast versus Least Coast kinda gal, eh? Ha! [;o)

Boy, it sure took Hollywood Hair long enough to get on the board, but when it finally did... that's 4 straight votes. Hooray for Hoooollywooood!

Unfortunately there's not enough time and outstanding votes left to make this a genuine "Battle" but at least the gap has been closed some.

No big fan of the "Fab Four" am I, but you're right that 'Lucy In The Sky' is a good example of the "Psychedelic" genre.

That raises a good Q: What would I select as the best example of Psychedelic Rock? Hmmm.... I would need to think on that, but Hendrix doing 'The Star-Spangled Banner' at Woodstock came to mind pretty quickly. (Not that there's anything right with that.)

Take two cookies, a bottle of wine, and text me in the morning.

  16. Grumpy cat, here. UGH! Wasn't the emphasis on the word STAR? I really liked the original, so maybe my expectations were too high. I'm going with Broadway cast (for some reason). Oh wait, they dance!

I thank you for coming by with your input!

When you say "original", I'm assuming you mean the #3 hit version of the song by Oliver. But in actuality, the Broadway version that you voted for is technically the "original" recording. Oliver's big hit was a cover of it.

Well, that puts an end to Hollywood's little voting streak. But this contest was already too far lost to be won.

    2. The Broadway version was the original? Yep, it's Oliver I'm (still) thinking of - Thanks ;-)

    3. Oliver's cover was great. One of those songs that most transports me back to the dippy hippie daze of my youth!

  17. Hi Stephen! I also liked the Hollywood version better, though I must confess I also had trouble hearing the original version. The song sounded great and seeing Treat Williams' photo made me remember how much I enjoyed the movie.

Thanks for a fun BOTB and I hope you have a great time at the Red Dog Saloon!

Thanks for coming by! I was just now packing my overnight bag for Virginia City & The Red Dog Saloon tomorrow when I decided to check my blog and found your comment here.

I appreciate the vote and am happy to see the Hollywood 'Hair' recording get a little more love in the 11th hour.

I'm glad you enjoyed the Battle and appreciate your continued support, my friend!

  18. Sorry i’m So late. I had a big ole comment planned out in my head, but then my head exploded. It’s been a rough week. Anyway... you know how my bite goes. Give it to the original Broadway version, please.
