Welcome back, my friends, to the "Battle" that never ends.
We're so glad you could attend. Come inside! Come inside!
.
This is 'BATTLE OF THE BANDS' ('BOTB') where you listen to different recordings and vote for the one you like best. A new Battle gets posted on the 1st of each month and on the 7th, I place my own vote, tally 'em all up and announce the winner.
.
Friend? Foe? Stranger? No matter, ALL are welcome. So pull up a chair, pour yourself 24 oz. of DOG BITE High Gravity Lager (or the poison of your choice) and turn it up to Eleven!

BOTB RESULTS: 2018, JUNE 15 (Or, CALIFORNIA VS. HOLLYWOOD TOWN)

.
STMcC’s Vote On '2018, June 15th: Battle Of The Bands' (Or, 'Manfred Mann's Earth Band Versus Manfred Mann's Earth Band') And The Final Tally:
.
.
My most recent BOTB installment was part of my 'Battle For Los Angeles' series and it featured two MMEB songs against each other: 'California' versus 'Hollywood Town'. The full contest, with all the votes and comments, can be found HERE.
.
The turnout wasn't doggone deplorable, but it wasn't sensationally stupendous either. So, I really do appreciate everyone who took the time to play along and submitted votes. As I've said before, there'd be no Battle Of The Bands without y'all. It would just be me playing with by myself.
.
The Battle was so close and it even exceeded my expectations. Any worry about a shutout was ended after the first two votes came in. (That's as quick as it is mathematically possible to end a shutout.) It was tied 5 to 5 after 10 votes were recorded. Now, instead of a shutout, I had to start worrying about another BOTB Tie.
.
'California' had a one-vote lead over 'Hollywood Town' when I submitted my own vote - the final one in the contest. And my vote gave 'California' a two-vote victory:
.
'California' by MMEB = 9 votes
.
'Hollywood Town' by MMEB = 7 votes
.
I can echo what Sheboyganboy VI said when submitting his vote: "Both of these are enjoyable, but I like California a significant amount more."
.
In fact, 'California' was the first song released as a single from Manfred Mann's 1978 'Watch' album and it pretty much tanked. I have been scratching my head over that for decades. To me, 'California' was a PERFECT song for '78 and had everything I would have thought necessary for a radio hit back then. There's a strong, rather haunting melody; a neat little twist in the lyrics; and a rather searing, stylistically cool electric guitar solo which securely nails the whole thing down. Truthfully, it's one of my all-time favorite examples of a "Power Ballad", and a song that I have never gotten tired of hearing. It brings back many marvelous memories for me.
.
MMEB's 1978 'Watch' album did not sell very well when it was first released. But, ironically, over the years, it continued to ring up steady sales and eventually became the band's biggest selling album ever. Yes, it has even sold more units than their album 'The Roaring Silence', which included the MASSIVE #1 hit 'Blinded By The Light'. (You had to be dead or deaf not to have heard that song in 1976/'77, because the radio stations wore it out.)
.
.
On one hand, that strikes me as almost unbelievable. But then on second thought, it occurs to me that, today, I own 'Watch' on compact disc, but I do not own 'The Roaring Silence', even though I really enjoyed listening to it on LP back in the day and I still dig their huge hit cover of 'Blinded By The Light'.
.

.
Our BOTB prognosticators both kicked butt in this Battle. When asked if 'Hollywood Town' would lose to 'California', The Magic 8-Ball (5-1) said "It Is Certain", and The Amazing Sixwell (4-2) said "Without A Doubt". Bingo!! Well, it was very close, but they were both very right.
.
A few people have inquired of the whereabouts of our BOTB friend Doc Cherdo of the blog [link> Cherdo On The Flipside. She wanted me to reassure you all that she is indeed alive and she and I have NOT had a falling out. Right now, she simply has her hands really full with a number of very important matters that have required her undivided attention. However, she said to me, "I'll be back", and I believe her. I'm going to remove the links to her blogs for now, but as soon as I get the word from her, I'll be reinstalling those links.
.
I'll be back, too, on July 1st with a new Battle Of The Bands contest. I hope that YOU will return also. I'm not sure yet what my next BOTB installment will be, but you can bet, God willing, there'll be one. ...Did I hear someone yell out, "Bring back Tiny Tim!"? Was that you, in the vest, is it?

  1. Even though I was keeping up with music back in 1978 far more than I do these days, I've never heard of the Watch album. I guess I was keeping up with different kinds of music back then.

Glad to hear Cherdo is doing okay. I'd been wondering about her.

I've been having a tough time keeping up with blogging this week as we visit family in Florida. Today my wife and I did a quick turn around tour to Key West and back. Tomorrow we'll do The Everglades. Then Sunday it's on to NJ. I need a vacation from vacation.

Good Battle this go around. I've got my next one ready to go just in case--I should be better able to do my blog rounds then.

See you then if not before.

It was so long ago that I can't rightly remember how I came to own the 'Watch' album (which I'm listening to as I type these words). But a pretty good educated guess is that after buying and enjoying 'The Roaring Silence', I automatically purchased MMEB's next album when it was released. And that would have been 'Watch'.

I'm looking forward to Cherdo's return. Hopefully it won't be too long.

Sounds like you've got a full vacation itinerary there. Key West is the one place I set out for on a road trip but never got to. That was in '83, going from N.Y.C. to L.A. by way of the Southeastern seaboard.

The goal was to go down into Key West and then start heading West. But we decided to go into the Okefenokee Swamp instead of Key West. And that turned into one of my very best vacation stories of all time.

Someday I may get to Key West, but until then, I have to be satisfied with Key Lime Pie.

Take care, Brother! Stay safe and we'll yak again soon.

It's kind of amusing to me in remembering that one day before the Battle was set to be posted, I started getting cold feet and was very seriously thinking about going with something completely different at the 11th hour.

Hopefully I'll recall this outcome the next time I start second guessing my first impression.

My first thought was that it would be very close. Then I somehow yakked myself into believing that this Battle was going to be a blowout. Turned out my first guess was best.

Cheryl is definitely going through a bit of a rough patch, both physically and mentally / emotionally, but she'll come through it, I'm sure.

  4. Hey! Who's that handsome feller in the top corner of your sidebar? Looks like Mr Sixwell sent you out for a makeover - so he can help find you that young mistress he's been rambling on about. My advice - watch out for the young ones. They tend to have daddy issues and are usually looking for a sugar daddy.

Good battle here. It was a lot closer than I thought it would be.

Glad to hear that you've been in touch with Cherdo. I was worried about her. Of course, I tend to worry about those who we havent heard from in quite some time. I will definitely keep her in my thoughts and prayers and look forward to her comeback.

Sorry I'm a wee bit o' late in responding, but I just got back from a trip outta town and... boy, is my liver tired!

Ha! That feller in the corner was just some bloke I saw here in Reno at the intersection of Pissed & Disappointed. He was holding a hand-lettered sign that read: "Have Beer, Will Travel".

I had no idea what that meant, but he agreed to let me take his picture for a six-pack of Mickey's Big Mouth and a bottle of Mad Dog 20/20.

I'll never need to worry about some Millennial chick latching onto me for her sugar daddy. I'm pretty sure one needs $$$$,$$$,$$ to be a chick's sugar daddy. That leaves me out. (Unless she'd settle for a six pack o' Mickeys and a bottle of Mad Dog 20/20.)

I'm quite certain Cherdo will appreciate your prayers. She's a real believer in that. (The smart ones always are.)

Were you the one calling out for more Tiny Tim? It kinda sounded like your voice to me. [;-)

I managed to pull a battle out of the thin air. I don't think I've done a battle quite like this one before, so it will be interesting to see how it plays out.

I think I've spent some time at the same intersection of Pissed & Disappointed. I have a studio apartment on the corner there.

Watch out for that head space - I hear it's a dangerous place to be.

Yeah, I thought that was you. I'm not really sure yet, but it's possible that Tiny Tim will be going up against a big name in the music industry on July 1st. But there ain't no big fear in Tiny. He's been a BOTB underdog before but has won 3 out of 4 times. If I have anything to say about it, someday people are gonna know that Tiny was more than just a tip-toe thru a garden of tulips!

Hmmm.... You've already got me intrigued about your next Battle. I'm now at the intersection of Curious & Curiouser.

  5. Yo McBrzo, fantastic battle. I voted for Blinded By The Light over Peter Frampton. Recount! I thought for sure you would vote for the Hollywood song for sure. Then people in Florida would have to hold the votes up to their heads like Carnac the Magnificent and tell us who won in this, the greatest country on God's green earth. Alas, you nominated, voted for, and elected California!

    1. Thanks, BROTHER DOGG!

Although I think MMEB's 'HOLLYWOOD TOWN' is a pretty good song, I also think their 'CALIFORNIA' is 163,676.3 square miles better.

Right now I've got playing one of the very few Punk bands worth a shit (there are probably really only 2, and this one is more like Proto-Punk than straight Punk). I've got 'em cranked "up to 11+", as I'm trying to annoy my ignorant neighbors. However, they're not on my list... yet.

      LIST (A Work In Progress)
      Quentin Tarantino
      David Hogg
      Peter Fonda
      Barack Obama

      etc., etc., etc.

    2. Yo McBro Brother,

One thing about northern CA small town relatively east is no one tailgates. On rare occasion when someone tailgates I slow down noticeably. And sometimes see in the rearview mirror the international jerk gesture of throwing their hands in the air a few times. I'm thinking to them, "You know what dude, leave for work five minutes earlier and you won't be so... so dependent on others to drive extra fast.
I saw what Peter Fonda tweeted then deleted. These former stars trying to remain relevant.
Quentin Tarantino = degrading, nightmares of depravity. I saw the one with John Travolta which inspired another two or more years of sicko movies that are "ironic" and "funny." I know you don't like Michael Medved but he does take those people to task.
I would say "On The Run" is proto-punk at over 6 minutes and good loud.

      *****

      The Doors
      Nietzschean - check.

      Rimbaudian poems - check.

      Dionysian- check.

Distinctive style that would work reading the phone book - check.

Creepin all up on the Oiuja board - check.

Keyboards ("That's not punk!" Zip it Orange County circa 1981 "Manicured lawns and conformity keep us down! Thus, we shall play all punk songs the same!")

The Doors foreshadow punk. There's a shadow on the star... shadow... shadow on the star... on the star... shaaadooow.. on the star.. on the Star... on the STAR- on the STAAR-ON THE STAR!! ON THE STAR!!!

I was dismayed at the mention of "Carnac the Magnificent above," but I predict that G Dogg, the most astute of all your commentors, implied no connection between that quack and charlatan and The Amazing Sixwell.

Sixwell appreciated the song dedication by Mr. McCarthy. The band is quite good and reminds one of The Who. The spirits tell The Amazing Sixwell that The Who will be a very successful band, but alas, Eddie and the Hot Rods will never amount to much. The Amazing Sixwell PREDICTS!!!

I enjoy the stream o' consciousness comments. I approach many of my own comments in the same manner, and hope that people are buckled up and can hold on for the duration of the E-Ticket ride.

Peter Fonda has a new movie coming out. I think we can safely say it will do only half of the business it otherwise would have done had he kept his communist mouth shut.

Few people are All bad. Apparently that applies even to Michael Medved.

Yip! I still maintain that "beer in the morning" line from 'Roadhouse Blues' is the moment when youthful rebellion (i.e., 'Summertime Blues' - the initial seed, or genesis of Punk) took that first hard turn in the direction of what would eventually become Punk Rock.

      >>... When there is a choice between The Doors and The Doors, people choose The Doors.

Ha!-Ha! When there is a choice between Tiny Tim and The Doors, I choose Tiny Tim. BUT!!... nine out of ten doctors recommend The Doors for their patients who like The Doors.

Thanks! That Iggy Pop interview was a trip. Toothless, bleeding, and acting like everything's SOP. Which for Iggy, it WAS!

I got a chuckle out of these two comments left below the video:

      TheDudeMinds892:
"How did he lose his tooth??"

      Cannibalkorntallica123:
      "It's iggy pop....."

To the person who knows nuttin' about Iggy Pop, that doesn't appear to be an answer to the question. But to the person who knows a bit about Iggy... it says it all.

My buddy, Brother Beer Boy Bryan Bodyguard Betty, is going to burn a CD for me of Songs 4 Driving 2. Of the 25 songs I've selected, do you think that Iggy's 'LUST FOR LIFE' is one of 'em? ...You betchum, Red Ryder!

I'm sure G DogG meant nuttin' by his mention of Carnac The Magnificent that would reflect negatively on you. Shucks! Everyone knows that Carnac couldn't even loosen your jockstrap! (I've heard that line actually originates with The Bible, incidentally.)

That's a pretty bold prediction on your part regarding The Who and Eddie And The Hot Rods, but I have faith that you will hit it on the nose. You usually do.

Although The Amazing Sixwell has excellent prescience, his HEARING is not so good. After you pointed it out he went back and listened again. So, you mentioned something about THE PRISONER? Was Eddie incarcerated? Perhaps he stole a hot rod? He mentions that he is not a number, but The Amazing Sixwell believes that a study of numbers often tells great truths about the future!

    8. McBro brother, there is only one reply link on which to click (we're supposed to use the word "select" because the young-uns on tablets or "smart" phones don't click rather swipe or touch or whatever).

The stream of consciousness is the absinthe talking. Hollywood and the NFL are seeing profits nosedive. Reagan did some great things though I don't think he emboldened us regular folks like Trump has. Summertime Blues is punk and wholly anti-everything because nobody gets the summertime blues - spring fever accelerated perhaps but with all the sunshine not blues. An inconvenience at best - I had to run the air conditioner! And buy two bags of ice (frozen water not some whippersnapper drug called ice of which - without checking wiki I bet there is). Morrison was punk for his time - I've woken up and drank a 40. A 24 ounce 40 = a six pack without the mixed in healthy water of 72 ounces.
Danny Sugarman (manager of The Doors) in his book Wonderland Avenue (has nothing to do with the infamous Wonderland murders) noted that Iggy Pop was the wildest and trashed his/Sugarman's house. Destroyed without even searching just Id. One of those "this is something we'll laugh about someday" moments.

Sixwell knows - I left seven messages on his answering machine and he didn't answer until I met him at the Dakota building. I told him that Carnac was a plagiarizer ripping of Mrs Funkenwagnells notes from a mayonnaise jar on a porch. Sixwell knows the future from a divine spark. Sixwell is like the mob telling J Edgar Hoover who to vote for at the fixed racetrack (it's not technically a bribe) - except nobody's telling Sixwell anything he just feels it. And Sixwell will, mark my words, choose the next winner of BOB. I'd tell 8 ball "Go. To. Hell." Sixwell is a better sport and true gentleman.

    9. I heard Tiny Tim may make a cameo. Please don't put Tiny Tim up against Richard Cheese. If Richard Cheese lost I'd be almost as devastated as I was when Sixwell got a prediction wrong. Sixwell knew/knows who would win/will win every time. He's testing faith. I shall not deny Sixwell three times, nor twice, not even once.

    10. G McDOGG ~
Ha! Few people elicit Biblical comparisons like The Amazing Sixwell does.

Fear not, my Brother. (Your tan is too light to warrant a "muh Bruhthuh". *Hat tip to Robert Barone*) Before your BOTB time, Tiny and Richard duked it out once. Tiny had to "show him a lesson" (as Oscar De La Hoya once said of an opponent whose name I don't recall). So, been there, done that, and I don't foresee a rematch in the future.

Speaking of Tiny (who is currently flying in from Minnesota for an appearance here tomorrow, and a contest against someone NOT named Richard Cheese), it's surprising how many well known celebrities were big fans of his. To name but a few: Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, and Lenny Bruce, who literally wore out his record of Tiny Tim's 'Space Ship Song'. Before most of the world had even heard of him, "Grandpa Munster" (Al Lewis) saw him perform and said he wanted to make Tiny a star! Man, when Grandpa Munster is in your camp, you KNOW you got some talent!

Speaking of 40-ouncers (which you did), In the years of "The League", the Soul Crusaders referred to those as "Buzz Bombs". I leaned toward the Mickey's Big Mouth Buzz Bombs, although in our Bay Street house, the Colt .45 Buzz Bombs were probably the most popular. (We left the OE-800 Buzz Bombs for our Bruhthuhs in the 'Hood -- which we visited often to get our Campos burritos. Campos being directly across the street from the little convenience market we affectionately referred to as "Stop & Stab".)

      >>... "Destroyed without even searching"

Ha! [;^D I see what you did there!

      >>... "And Sixwell will, mark my words, choose the next winner"

It should be interesting, as I know for a fact that Sixwell and 8-Ball are in disagreement as to the outcome of tomorrow's BOTB installment. Either 6well is going to up his record to "even" with the 8-Ball's, or 8-Ball will extend his lead to 2 wins ahead. Stay tuned, Brother -- same Bat-Channel!
