Welcome back, my friends, to the "Battle" that never ends.
We're so glad you could attend. Come inside! Come inside!
.
This is 'BATTLE OF THE BANDS' ('BOTB') where you listen to different recordings and vote for the one you like best. A new Battle gets posted on the 1st of each month and on the 7th, I place my own vote, tally 'em all up and announce the winner.
.
Friend? Foe? Stranger? No matter, ALL are welcome. So pull up a chair, pour yourself 24 oz. of DOG BITE High Gravity Lager (or the poison of your choice) and turn it up to Eleven!

BOTB RESULTS: OCT. 1, 2019 (Or, CHUCK JACKSON VERSUS CRAWFORD & McGRIFF)

.
STMcC’s Vote On '2019, October 1st: Battle Of The Bands' (BOTB) - Or, Chuck Jackson Versus Hank Crawford & Jimmy McGriff - And The Final Tally:
.
'Good Vibrations' illegally parks to go to church.
.
First and foremost (as always) my sincere thanks to each and every one of youz who took the trouble 'n' time to come by here to listen, consider, and vote. It was a nice BOTB turnout, and without y'all, there'd be no point in any of this.
.
Dang, mang, this was an excellent Battle!! (I susexpected it would be.) The song was 'Any Day Now' by Chuck Jackson (vocal version) and Hank Crawford & Jimmy McGriff (instrumental interpretation) and the Battle took place HERE. After 14 votes were recorded, the score was 7-7. It don't get no better'n dat!
.
But then G DogG came in at the 11th hour and 59th second with a bote for Crawford & McGriff, and I sealed the deal with my own (final) bote for the duo.
.
Chuck Jackson = 7 votes
.
Crawford & McGriff = 9 votes
.
To me, the Crawford & McGriff instrumental is extremely exciting, musically masterful, and *EVERYTHING* I look for in a Jazz performance! It's also pretty high up on my list of all-time favorite instrumental Jazz recordings!!
.
Our resident psychic, Carnac The Magnificent, said that Chuck Jackson would narrowly win ("by the hair of his chinny-chin-chin"). But, actually, it was Crawford & McGriff who won, in the final seconds, by the hair of their chinny-chin-chins. That makes our psychic's record for accurately predicting BOTB outcomes 1-2 after three Battles. If he doesn't pick up the pace pretty soon, I predict there is careening, out-of-control bus with his name on it in his immediate future. (Which probably makes me a better psychic than Carnac is!)
.
Thanks again, All Y'All! I hope to see ya here again on November 1st for my November 1st BOTB contest. (You see how those dates work? Perfectly in-sync! ...And, NO!, NSYNC will *NEVER* appear on this blog in a BOTB contest! Damn it! Even Carnac could accurately predict THAT!)

  1. Yo Stephen!

Pretty decent turnout for your battle here. Personally, I had to go with the vocals, because it helped put the instrumentation into perspective for me. But it was a dang close battle - so I'm happy with the results.

Whatcha got in store for us on Nov 1? I'm still trying to figure that one out for myself. I have lots of 'suggestions' in my files, but nothing is begging me yet to be used. Hopefully I'll gain some inspiration between now and then.

    1. Howdy, MARY, MARY, QUITE EXTRAORDINARY ~

The "phunny" thing is that - although I definitely dug both versions (two winners!!) - the first rendition of this song I ever heard was the Crawford / McGriff recording. In fact, I don't believe I ever heard a "vocal" performance until I went to put this BOTB contest together. Therefore, for me, personally, it was the instrumental version that "put the vocal into perspective for me". Ha!-Ha! Phunny how that works.

However, my love of Jazz, and my love of the electric organ (#1) and the saxophone (#2) makes it highly unlikely that I would ever prefer the Chuck Jackson vocal version, regardless of which one I heard first.

I'm not yet sure what I'll do on Nov. 1st. Like you, I have dozens & dozens & dozens of potential BOTB match-ups written down. Plus, whatever I'm listening to at the time often pushes its way ahead of the line. I'm certain you know how that goes!

BTW, I almost made this post a Two-Fer. I very nearly posted my BOTB Results in conjunction with a "Rocktober" installment. But I later decided against it.

But... BUT... BUTT... I mean, *HOWEVER!*... I am thinking of posting 2 or possibly 3 "Rocktober" installments to yer blogfest.

Music isn't really what inspires me to write in these Biblical End-Times times. Bu-- er, I mean... however,... I might wanna contribute two, or a few, posts to yer R-OCK-tober blogfest.

Lemme give it some thot. I would prefer to introduce folks to some excellent but previously unheard songs, rather than post songs that the majority of folks are already familiar with.

muh brane be wurkin'... give the (second littlest) organ sum time. ;^D

    2. Oh Stephen! Be still my heart<3

I would LOVE to have you join one or two or even more of the days of RocktoberMusicFest. You know, you've done some pretty decent reviews of albums on your other blogs - they would also qualify as a good addition to the 'Fest. Just add a video and it's a done deal!

My battle results are live now... As I battled Cream's White Room in this battle and with the very recent passing of Ginger Baker, I've got a setlist dedicated to Cream.

Ha!-Ha! You're much too easily excited. [:oD

Alright, I thought of a good one to post. It's a mostly unknown (non-hit) by a very famous singer-songwriter.

If I have a chance before it's "Bedtime For Bonzo", I'll try to type it up and set it to post automatically at 12:33 AM.

And I'll swing on over to your pad soon'z ah can. (It's been such a busy day that I never even found the time to change outta my pajamas!)

I anxiously await your post :)

      >>,,,(It's been such a busy day that I never even found the time to change outta my pajamas!)

That was me yesterday. I just could not find the energy. I think I even ran a fever last night. Good thing 'The Cute One' stopped by to spend the afternoon/evening with me today, or I may have not got dressed at all again today. Of course, he wouldn't complain about that too loudly. He didn't even complain when I accidentally got sick all over him. Not to worry - I'm doing alright now. just needed to purge whatever it was out of my system.

Alright, that's my overshare (literally) for the day.

      Catch you on the flipside

Yeah, sorry about not getting that post written last night. I really wanted to, but by 9:00 PM, I was completely done in and needed to hit the sack. I hadn't slept well at all the night before, and was feeling pretty horrific all day (which is the *real* reason I never even changed outta muh jamas).

But the post is coming fo' sho! I'll get 'er written and posted today or by sunup tomorrow at the very latest.

"The Cute One"? Somehow I had gotten the impression that wound up in the dustbin of romantic history. Was I wrong? Or is this one of those 'on again, off again' type o' thangs?

  2. Good outcome though I think a win either way would have been okay with me. Or maybe a tie like I ended up with.

Yeah, I think it's a really good song, and I wouldn't have been disappointed if the outcome had been reversed. I'm just glad it was a serious nip-'n'-tuck race, as I had figured it would be.

  3. That was a fun battle with a good turnout. Glad to see my preference won! P.S. I've changed my mind about doing battles on the 1st of the month. It conflicts with other things I'm doing, so, I will continue on with battles on the 15th only. Sorry about that! Hope to see you there, when you can.

    1. Thanks, DEBBIE! Yes, I really dug the Battle and it was indeed a nice voter turnout. It's always fun when you get a good crowd and the two contestants are going back and forth for the lead.

No worries about the 1st vs. 15th.
If it were a BOTB contest, I'd bote for the 1st, but whatever works best for you is the way "Debbie should do it". (Does the initial "D" after your name stand for "Does..."? Ha! I'm exactly that sort of pain in the ass who can't let it go. ;^) Sorry. I shall endeavor to do better!!

But, seriously now, I'm just pleased as spiked punch that you're still doing it with us, regardless of which date you choose.

    2. D is for Doglady! (Well, not really..) 😉Here's my issue about the 1st: I participate in a monthly photography blogfest that posts on the last day of the month. Doing BOTB on the 1st day, would mean TWO posts, TWO days in a row, and that would require way more online time than I'm able (or willing) to give.

That makes perfect sense. I would feel exactly the same way if I were in your high heels. Not all of us can be like John and post 2, 3, or 4 blog bits per day. ;^)

  4. Stephen,

Thanks for reporting the outcome. You had a close one! John reported that you had a tie but it looks like things changed.

I have my BoTB set for the 15th and when it goes live DH & I will be enjoying some vacation time. No plans for a faraway trip, just staying within a day's drive to soak up a little fun R&R. Anytime one can break away from the normal grind it's always a refresher. Unfortunately, I might miss out on many of the showdowns that take place but I'll do my best to hit as many as I can. :)

Have a good week and I'm sorry for the delay in visiting. I've been dealing with a stuffy head but worse than that a Mucuinex DM hangover for two days. It took me that long to realize my loopy state of mind was caused my OTC meds. I swear we didn't see on the package that it causes drowsy, dizziness, and nauseousness. Thankfully, this morning I'm nearly back to my self again. Well, about 90%. :)

John reported I had a tie? Hmmm.... Not sure how he got that idea. However, after the first 12 and then 14 votes came in, it WAS tied 6-6 and then 7-7.

Glad to learn you're feeling better, and I hope you have a pleasant, relaxing trip!

  5. Stephen,

Maybe, I misread John's comment being in my fuzzy, disoriented state of mind lately. I'm sorry for not leaving a breadcrumb to my results post or making it stand out in my post lineup. Anywho, you'll find my results at the end of Tuesday's post, 6 Heart songs from the 70s. Feel free to check it out but don't kill yourself getting to it. I don't want you breaking your neck. I'm an understanding person if you don't have time. I just wanted to make amends for your difficulty locating my post. :) Have a good day, my friend!

Thanks for the link. I went there and, yes, it did seem John thought I'd had a BOTB tie. Not sure why, but stuffs happens. No biggie.

That was a great Battle you put together. And there sure were a few ties in this round, even if my Battle wasn't one of them. It was close, though.

  6. And Stephen,

Sorry I been had forgot. You see October crept up on me like Torch when I was passed out and I am just now rememberin. I will try agin in November. Liked your posts about Van. Remember you introducing me to Inarticulate Speech of the Heart on the road trip that made me quit drinkin. I can still smell that sunscreen (forgot the brand) when I hear that album. Isn't Connswater the best road trip music for a windy road? I do hope you can see your way to forgiving the Pooh (again!).

Has that lower body part healed yet?

      >>... Remember you introducing me to Inarticulate Speech of the Heart on the road trip that made me quit drinkin.

Well, then... you remember a helluva lot more'n I remember. Did I introduce you to that album? (But then again, I ain't become a "quitter" yet and I dun had some tumblers full of 'Evan Williams' tonight, so... so... there ya go!! I don't remember what you *KNOW*.)

Truthfully, the only music that truly matters is 'The Glenn Miller Orchestra' and 'Eddie Cochran'. Everything else is just filed under the category of "Also Rans".

So, no worries when you miss a BOTB installment... unless, of course, one of the contestants is Glenn Miller or Eddie Cochran.
