Back on June 7, 2020, I announced that Vicki Sue Robinson had won in my 3-Way 1977 High School Graduation BOTB contest between Vicki, Starbuck, and The Tavares Brothers. You can revisit that BOTB Results post HERE.
.
However, in that same post, I wrote this:
.
Because I done Starbuck wrong [by removing their big hit 'Moonlight Feels Right' from this 3-way BOTB competition], for fear of facing a BOTB shutout, I feels bad. And to rectify the situation, I'm seriously thinking that on June 1, 2021 (if the Internet and BOTB are still "things"), I may give Starbuck a rematch against Vicki and see if she can still wallop Starbuck on an even playing field. (My Magic 8-Ball sez: Outlook not so good.)
.
Well, guess what! It's June 1, 2021, the Internet and BOTB are still "things", so here comes the REMATCH!, one year to the day later!
.
Please Bote (aka "Vote") for your favorite of these two songs. A year ago, Vicki Sue Robinson's biggest hit, 'Turn The Beat Around' (1976), beat Starbuck's song 'Rock 'N' Roll Rocket / Little Bird (Reprise)' by a score of 9 to 3. Let's see if she can also kick-butt against Starbuck's biggest hit, 'Moonlight Feels Right' (1976). That Magic 8-Ball said the "outlook" was "not so good". Let's find out now, in my 154th BOTB contest.

You know who I'm going to vote for, right? Starbuck?

DeleteThanks for popping in with your two cents!
Yeah, I had you figured as a Starbuck vote. I'm pretty sure the Magic 8-Ball did, too.
You and I both share a Starbuck / Bruce Blackman appreciation, methinks. In fact, I recently learned that Blackman published an autobiography, and I'm seriously thinking of splurging for it. He's been all over, and I suspect there will be plenty of cool but unknown true stories in his book.

Surprise surprise! You've brought out the Gomer Pyle in me. I wasn't expecting to see you here today, but glad that you came back for today at least. Hopefully you'll be back again.
ReplyDeleteThis is kind of tough I think. Such different songs both with a certain merit. I like both of them. I really do like Starbuck's song, but Vickie Sue's disco romp really got me charged. I'm such a sucker for disco.
Give my wavering vote to Vickie Sue Robinson while I subdue my urge to dance around the room.

It's kinda phunny how this Battle came about: I was recently telling someone that there was one particular Battle I felt bad about never having put together, even though it had been on my list to do for a very long time.
The more I thought about it, the more I felt I oughta try to compose it. But then I remembered that a year ago I had promised Starbuck a rematch against Vicki Sue, because I knew I had cheated them in that previous match-up.
Therefore, I put this rematch together (and the crappy Blogger system cooperated with me much better'n I expected), and now I'm still planning to do that "other" Battle that's been on my list forever on July 1st.
After that... who knows? I'm playing it completely by ear, and waiting to see if this and my July 1st Battle garner enough votes to make future BOTB installments worthwhile. Happily, now that I'm not employed, I have more time available to participate in this kind of entertainment.
I completely agree with you about this match-up: I genuinely love, Love, LOVE both of these songs, and Vicki's 'BEAT' is my favorite Disco song ever. In fact, there's only about... Hmmm.... 4, maybe 5 or 6 Disco songs that I like at all, but this one is #1 on my list by a huge margin.
After putting this Battle together, I listened to Vicki's 'BEAT' and was dancing in my chair. I think I need a hip replacement now.

HERE'S A VOTE FROM MY McBROTHER:
ReplyDeleteMy vote's for STARBUCK, even though I enjoy both songs. That Starbuck song really takes me back to high school and my teenage years, when I was young, good-looking, and had a future. Well... I was young, anyway... and sometimes sober.

It's good to see the aliens have finally released you! Do you need some salve from all that probing? I hear coconut oil and lavender makes a big difference!
ReplyDeleteI'm not 100% certain (because I'm too lazy to look it up) but I think I voted for Vicki last year. Sure am glad that you decided to re-visit this battle - because Starbuck definitely gets my vote! (I'd offer you a bote - but The Cute One is meeting wiff his lawyer and I wouldn't want to be added to the list fer drinkin his Cap'n Morgan)
It's good to have ya back. 'spose I should take you off the retired status :)

DeleteIt's good to be outta jail... again!
Yeah, those illegal aliens gave me da business. I'll give that coconut earl and lavender a try, since this Mad Dog 20/20 and Bacardi 151 ain't gettin' the job done.
I looked it up for you and yes, indeed, you DID bote for Vicki a year ago. But it wasn't a very enthusiastic bote.
Very wise of you! Never touch a man's Cap'n Morgan! I mean, unless the Cap'n gives orders that you do so. You always gotta follow the orders of the Cap'n, or you'll get Crunched!
Thanks for the kind words. Yeah, I think you can take me off of "retired" status. At least for now. (All offers subject to change. Consult your doctor before taking this medication. Stephen,
ReplyDeleteHoly smoke, what a battle! I absolutely love both songs, like Lee Vickie's Disco beat really had me chair boogieing this evening and I'm going to give VICKIE SUE ROBINSON my vote. Probably any other time, I would've gone with Starbuck and I'm not talking about the coffee, although I do like coffee just not the over-priced stuff that I can make better at home for a fraction of the cost but I do love the song "Moonlight Feels Right". These songs really swept me back in time! Great comeback battle and I'm so happy Blogger didn't make you regret your decision to put together this battle. :)
Howdy-Doody, CAThy! ~
DeleteI'm very pleased that you enjoyed this Comeback Battle. I'm also very pleased that you found my wayward comment / vote for the Battle on your own blog. Spam is a ravenous file and it "never says, 'Enough!'" (Proverbs 30:16)
I dance like I've got "the White man's overbite" ('When Harry Met Sally') but there are a few songs that literally COMPELL my old body to move, and Vicki Sue Robinson's 'Turn The Beat Around' is surely one of 'em. (If I ever throw my back out, I'm gonna sue Vicki Sue for every penny she has! ;^)

ReplyDeleteWelcome back temporarily to BoTB.
Because of Blogger/Google (and all the rest of Satan's minions I am fighting against) this will be short and sweet:
Vickie Sue. Not a fan of this S.B. song. Maybe I’m too old.

For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.
~ EPHESIANS 6:10-12
Now that I has dispensed with the Spiritual portion of this program...
What doest thou mean by "Maybe I'm too old"?
If you were implying that maybe you are too old to get on down with your bad self because Vicki's song boogies too fast for you, I might agree.
But you're saying that you're too old to go romancing in the moonlight? Hmmm.... Does your wife know this? And ALL of your concubines?!
Both songs were Top 10 hits in 1976, so... Hmmm.... you puzzle me, O Great Inscrutable One!
Regardless, another boogie'n bote for Vicki Sue's 180-degree beat.

Sixgun McItchyfinger sez:
DeleteI think what I am saying is that I am too old to like songs from this era. Maybe that’s BS, I don’t know. I would say that if you picked two songs from 1970, or 71 or 72, chances are much higher than I'd like the
selections.
I don’t really like EITHER of these songs very much. I checked the Billboard top 100 for 1976, and the whole list was garbage.
Songs from that year that I really like a lot: "The Boys Are Back in Town" - Thin Lizzy
"You're My Best Friend" - Queen
"Bohemian Rhapsody" - Queen
"Say You Love Me" - Fleetwood Mac
"50 Ways to Leave Your Lover" - Paul Simon
Songs from the list that I kinda like:
"Get Closer" - Seals and Crofts
"Sara Smile" - Hall & Oates
"She's Gone" - Hall & Oates
"This Masquerade" - George Benson
"Evil Woman" - Electric Light Orchestra
"Take It to the Limit" - Eagles
That's 11 songs from that year that I won't smash the radio if they came
on.
The rest of the 100: crap. Some songs I loathe, some I am only ambivalent about, a lucky few more I'd elevate to "meh" status. So it struck me to say that maybe I was too old. But I could have said I was too young! If you had featured music from the 90's then I'd have had things to praise then, too.
Sixgun
Hmmm.... Well, I see that The Great Musical Divide is as alive and well as it's ever been.
DeleteLike I've said a godzillion and two times, the vast, vast majority of that pasteurized, synthesized, homo-genized, synthetic, artificial Rock/Pop pap from about 1986 onward is what FORCED me to go searching for "Real" music. I guess I should be grateful to that pap, because that was what really drove me deeper into Blues and Jazz.
The 1990s? Oh, hell! I am way, Way, WAY "too old" for that nonsense. If KAOS captured me and began torturing me with 24/7 Rock/Pap from "the fake '90s", I would surrender in less than an hour and plead with Siegfried, "Please, just give me the covid-666 vaccine, because I'd rather be dead than listen to one more minute of this garbage!" As a general rule, Starbuck is absolutely intolerable in plural form - awful coffee, braindead politics - but as a singular, I dig 'em (it?).
ReplyDeleteI came, I saw, I turned the beat around. For my money (zero dollars), give my bote to Starbuck.

And never, ever do I think of that anti-American establishment that sells overpriced CommieCoffee to "woke" clowns.
