Yes, it’s time once again for ‘Battle Of The Bands’ (‘BOTB’)
.
But first... I thought y'all might be interested to know that this is my 48th 'Battle Of The Bands' installment meaning, of course, that BOTB is now officially two years old!

Some of you may wonder how this good-sized blogfest got started. Well, initially, it was not at all intended to be a blogfest (or bloghop, as some of yaz call 'em). On 7/10/2013, FarAwayEyes posted a blog bit titled 'House Guests & Battle Of The Bands'. It was sort of a throw-away, as she was just trying "to keep up with a Wednesday post".

I thought it was a great idea that should become a semi-regular event, and I tried to yak FAE into continuing it. Then I decided that I was going to post my own BOTBs in the future, whether she did or not. After a series of Emails to each other, we both decided to begin posting "Battles" and we worked out the dates 'n' details.

Before long, music-lovers who embraced FAE's original concept were asking if they could join BOTB and that's how we got where we are today.

So, if you dig BOTB, when voting on FAE's "Battle" this week, why not thank her for getting us all started on it? I don't think anyone could have really foreseen this thing going stronger than ever after two full years.

I have just started a new job, so it's going to take me much longer than usual to get my votes in on your BOTB blog bits, but I'll get there eventually.

Alright, let’s get on it...
...and remember, BOTB is about the music, not the videos.
.
GOODNIKS  VS.  NO-GOODNIKS

Wackypedia sez:
Peter "Pete" Seeger (May 3, 1919 – January 27, 2014) was an American folk singer ... A fixture on nationwide radio in the 1940s, he also had a string of hit records during the early 1950s as a member of the Weavers, most notably their recording of Lead Belly's "Goodnight, Irene", which topped the charts for 13 weeks in 1950. ... A prolific songwriter, his best-known songs include "Where Have All the Flowers Gone?", "If I Had a Hammer", and "Turn! Turn! Turn!" (lyrics adapted from Ecclesiastes), which have been recorded by many artists both in and outside the folk revival movement and are sung throughout the world.

Wackypedia sez:

She was married to actor Ryan O'Neal from 1963 to 1967, with whom she had two children: Griffin and Tatum O'Neal. Moore died of lung cancer in 1997.

  2. You made this one easy for me.

Pete Seeger is one of my least favorite music performers and the Hootenanny movement was one of the most boring to me in American music history.

On the other hand Andy Griffith is one of my favorite TV personalities. I like the simple presentation of the duo and the sweet harmonies.

My vote goes to Moore and Griffith.

Hope I can make it through all the Battles this time around as my computer situation is very slow and I'll be away from computer access for the next couple days. I'll do my best!

  4. Through my husband, I met Seeger and some of the other American trad singers at a couple of festivals. The Hubby was also friends with Les Paul and Les people called our home the day after his death. Although you wouldn't know my husbands name, lots of these guys knew his.

Anyway, I'm surprised you have Seeger on here as he was a known Communist. Personally I feel like a lot of those rich folkies were just posers, however they did keep American Trad music alive and that was a very valuable thing. I'm a big fan of root music and like hearing it as close to it's original sound as possible.

That said, I'm voting for Moore and Griffith. The vocals are so smooth and the harmonies are sweet. And they manage to keep the mournful feel of this song intact. Just a beautiful rendition all way around.

I'm wondering if you may have a shut out on this one.

  6. Definitely Moore and Griffith for me. With Pete Seeger's version I felt like I was tossed back in time, maybe on a Western movie set, sitting around a campfire and about to rustle up some grub. That one didn't do it for me. Joanna Moore's voice is pretty too. So that's where my vote is going. Congrats on the new job! Hope you like it.

  21. Really, you pit Joanna against Pete Seeger? Like, how to choose here; both are so beautifully rendered. I remember my dad playing this on his electric guitar, but he did not plug in the amplifier cuz it would piss mom off. Well, he did the entire hook up with a pedal lots of time, so maybe on this one once or twice. Or, maybe I had a 45 of Seeger. Damn, just . . damn.

Well I love them both. Joanna has that family vibe thing going for her; Pete is just an old cowboy singer, fit for the range, and a harmonica may have made his version better. But can you fault a banjo out in the cow paddies?

I'm gonna give my vote to Pete. May not have the harmonics of Joanna and Andy, but Pete's version brings out the cowboy love in me. Send me back to 1884 and vaqueros tending the herd on a range drive.

Congrats on the new job :) and happy birthday to BotB.

  22. STMcC’s Vote On '2015, July 15th: Battle Of The Bands'
(Or, 'Pete Seeger Vs. Joanna Moore & Andy Griffith')
    And The Final Tally:

This was one of the most lopsided BOTB blowouts I've ever had. I planned it that way. I wanted it that way. In fact, before I even published this Battle, I told FAE in an Email that if I were ever to have a shutout, I would WANT it with THIS BOTB installment.

Normally, I try to conceive of competitive 'Battle Of The Bands' blog bits - the more competitive the better! They don't always turn out that way, but that is my intent.

In this case though, when I went looking for competitors to put against JOANNA MOORE & ANDY GRIFFITH, I found a couple that I thought might give them moderate competition (such as the Burl Ives and Connie Francis versions), but I was pretty sure Joanna & Andy were gonna win this Battle, no matter who I put against them.

So, for the first time, I decided to go "the other way", and put together a Battle where I could watch a person I really dislike getting his ass kicked in the voting. And that person would be PETE SEEGER.

Musically, I think the guy was boring (see John Holton's comment and count me in with it), and politically, I can't stomach him. As Anne O'Leary pointed out, Pete Seeger (a member of the Communist Party, USA) was an admitted communist until the very end. Not a smart man! Although he WAS the man who said he wished he could cut the cable when Bob Dylan "went electric" at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965.

I have NO USE for Communists! (Yes, I'm looking at you too, Barack Obama!) Take your anti-Constitutional, anti-American politics and move to Russia or China.

So, knowing that Pete Seeger was a stupid man, an avowed Communist, and a pretty poor performer (in my opinion), I set him up to get the unholy crap kicked out of him by Joanna Moore & Andy Griffith, and that's exactly what happened.

To my great pleasure, the voting turned out like this:

    Pete Seeger = 3 Votes
Joanna Moore & Andy Griffith = 18 Votes

    That's good stuffs!

As always, thanks to EVERYONE who took the time to listen and vote (no matter who you voted for). I hope to see you all again on August 1st for my next BOTB installment, which I promise will be much more competitive and genuine.
