This is 'BATTLE OF THE BANDS' ('BOTB') where you listen to different recordings and vote for the one you like best. A new Battle gets posted on the 1st of each month and on the 7th, I place my own vote, tally 'em all up and announce the winner.

BATTLE OF THE BANDS: NOV. 1, 2022 (Or, GLENN MILLER VERSUS THE DOORS VERSUS CHRIS BOTTI)

.
[*Painting by my good friend "Doc" Cherdo*]
.
HAPPY ALL SAINTS' DAY, Y'ALL!
.
First of all, I want to remind you that dear dIEDRE has joined our Battle Of The Bands club. So, please be sure to visit her Battle installment [link> HERE, and please make certain to add her blog, StreamPebbles, to your blog's list of current BOTB participants {https://streampebbles.com/}. Thanks!!
.
Alright, let's get on it. Let's get ON this thing!
.
In part, Almanac.com says this:
The term “Indian Summer” has been around for centuries. What is an Indian Summer or Second Summer? ... it’s a period of abnormally warm weather occurring in late autumn between St. Martin’s Day (November 11) and November 20 with generally clear skies, sunny but hazy days, and cool nights.
.
And The Cambridge Dictionary includes the following as a definition of Indian Summer:
.
...a pleasant or successful time almost at the end of someone's life, job, or other period.
.
I like that. I like that a lot! Because now, in my 63rd year, and the start of my second year of official retirement, I feel like I've been blessed by God to have finally been directed to a place that really feels like "home". I've lived in "Willoughberry", Nevada, for nearly four years now, and I love it as much today as when I first moved here.
.
So, this being November, and me enjoying "a pleasant time almost at the end of my life", I'm giving you three completely different tunes titled 'INDIAN SUMMER' to hear and vote on. Please vote for your favorite 'Indian Summer' and tell me why you done that.
.
I'll be back on or around November 8th to cast my own BOTB "bote" and announce the winner. Thanks for playing, my friends!

  1. Stephen,

Is it really November? I think we're experiencing Indian Summer in our neck of the woods. Over the next several days our forecast is for the daily highs to be in the mid to upper 70s and the nightly lows in the upper 40s to low 50s. If past trends hold true, then we'll get a cool down for Thanksgiving before it warms up again. It's crazy weather. Anywho, in this battle I preferred the sound of Chris Botti the best and am giving him my vote in this round. :)

I'm delighted you're still love living where you do and that you're enjoying your retirement. Have a bandtastic week, my friend!

I'd trade with you. We seem to be getting colder-than-usual weather. Even got some intermittent snowing yesterday... until I killed it off with some Cruzan 'Black Strap Rum' and Beach Boys music played loud enough to send a message to the Winter Warlock.

I hope I can get some hiking and bicycle riding in before the Rum & Beach Boys wears off!

  2. It is Native American Summer here in the Northeast right now. It was 69 degrees yesterday and beautiful!

This is a good theme for a battle, with good contestants offering quite different styles. I like two of them a lot and one I dislike intensely. You know which one that is, I am sure. I slam them frequently. But Miller and Botti are excellent and it is a difficult choice between them. Botti gets the nod, though. He is sooooo smooth, and this is just the sort of song I would love to wake up to in the morning with a cup of joe... if I drank coffee. I'll try it with Monster.

Yes, the thing I like best about this Battle is the wide range of musical styles between these three contestants. They're all personally representing Indian Summer (or some aspect of it, or something related to it) and yet all three musical pieces sound considerably different.

      >>... I like two of them a lot and one I dislike intensely.

      You're a strange dude.

And stop slamming the Doors - it's really hard on the hinges!

Ha!-Ha! You remembered the MMWJ results. Bravo!
But... I trust you're joking about drinking 'Monster' in the mornings.

  3. I didn't realize that Indian Summer was a November thing. I guess I'm in the Indian Summer of my life, but hopefully this old life of mine goes a long time to come unless the rapture comes first, which would be preferable to me.

No surprises in the Glenn Miller and Chris Botti recordings. Both are very nice listening, but no startling musical revelations with either. On the other hand, I cannot recall ever having heard the song by The Doors. "Morrison Hotel" is the one Doors album that I never owned and likely never listened to in its entirety, so no surprise that I might have never heard the song. The sound is a bit unexpected. It's a nice reflective song.

I'll give my vote to The Doors.

Completely agree! Although I'm also quite OK with kicking the bucket even BEFORE the Rapture occurs:

      All my bags are packed
      I'm ready to go
I'm standin' here beside my door...

I was a huge Doors fan in my teen years and owned every single one of their LPs. But my favorite was always 'Morrison Hotel', closely followed by 'L.A. Woman'. Today, the ONLY original Doors release I own on CD is 'Morrison Hotel'. But I also have a double-disc compilation set.

  4. It's warm here...up to 18C which is crazy. Well, I like all 3 so this is a toughie but I will go with Glen Miller. I just like the big band sound. I guess it depends on my mood as I might go for the Doors tomorrow but it's Glen today. I'm glad you lobe where you are living now. That's nice.

Thank you! Yes, actually, it *IS* nice. It's a great location with nice people - the friendliest place I've ever lived. Barring any unforeseen local craziness, I will be pleased as spiked punch to live out the rest of my mortal life here in "Willoughberry".

  5. I don't have a vote. I stopped to say "Hello, Mr. McCarthy." Cherdo is so talented. I'm also 63 years old and in the Indian Summer of my career. I'm glad you're happy in your home.

JANIE! JANIE! JANIE! (spoken like Cary Grant... who apparently never really said "Judy! Judy! Judy!")

Nice to see you drop in again.
Unfortunately, that picture of Cherdo's painting does not come close to doing it justice. It was just a cell phone photo taken in bad light, but the Fall beauty of it still shines through, methinks. Her painting was based on a photo I took of a farm about 15-20 minutes from where I now live. It's located on a beautiful old road -- Highway 395, in Northern Nevada.

I hope you're also feeling pleased with things in the Indian Summer of your career.

It's pretty quiet where I live, lots of scenic mountains to hike and quiet streets to bike ride.

      >>... I don't have a vote.

Sure, you have a vote! Everybody gets a vote on my blog. You want I should put one in for you? Glenn Miller has the fewest votes at the moment, so maybe I'll let Glenn have yours, eh?

I didn't realize that Botti's 'Indian Summer' got any radio airplay. It's the opening track on his 2003 album 'A Thousand Kisses Deep', which is one of my very favorite albums to listen to first thing in the morning when I'm having my coffee (as hinted at by Sheboyganboy Sixgun). I call albums like that "Morning Music With Joe" (or MMWJ for short).

Thanks for mentioning me again, my friend ;-)
We may actually be done with heatwaves now. Had kind of a pleasant "Sailor's warning" type morning.
I hadn't seen Cherdo's work in a while. She sure is talented.
Terrific line up for Indian Summer tunes. I like them all. I was filing as I listened and I must say Jim Morrison had me back in my chair sitting still to listen. Wow. A vote for the Doors, please!

My very favorite season is Autumn or Fall (it's a toss-up between the two ;-), but it goes by way too quickly here. And then when they make us turn the clock back an hour in early November, the party's really over. (I HATE that!)

I'm pleased that you liked this set list for 'Indian Summer'. I really dig the variety of it.

This is one of the mellowest Doors songs I can think of. Very different from so much of their "theatrical" tunes. Jimbo & Co. are definitely holding their own in this contest.

  8. I had no idea Doc Cherdo painted like that! That's amazing! She's so talented.

True story: the first time I clicked onto this blog post, I did a very quick, very tired scan of the heading and swore it read, 'BATTLE OF THE BANDS: NOV. 1, 2022 (Or, GLENN MILLER VERSUS THAT DOOFUS CHRIS BOTTI). After realizing I was probably far too tired to be looking at BOTB, I closed it out, took a power nap, and now I'm back, no longer seeing doofuses.

Sixth Sense kid: "I see doofuses... everywhere."
Police interrogation officer: "The doofuses you see, are they in the room with us right now?"

I'd heard the term Indian Summer before, but didn't know the specifics. I now have plenty of jokes to arm myself with, too, knowing I was pretty much born during Indian Summer.

I fell in love with that Glenn Miller song the moment I heard it (it's a new one for me), and I knew it couldn't be topped. The Doors were good, and Chris Botti was even gooder, but I was right, and nothing can top Glenn Miller in this one. Give my bote to him, and make sure you let Chris Botti know that even though he wasn't my top pick, he's still far from a doofus in my eyes.

Yes, sir, Cherdo has done a lot of really cool paintings over the years. This one was based on a photo I took of an old farm on an old road near where I live. And the farm also happens to be very close to a small road that has my all-time favorite name: Lonesome Polecat Lane (That just sounds so "Mayberry" to me! "Come along, Barney. We've got to bust-up a moonshine still out on Lonesome Polecat Lane that Otis was talking about in his sleep last night.")

      >>... True story: the first time I clicked onto this blog post, I did a very quick, very tired scan of the heading and swore it read ... (Or, GLENN MILLER VERSUS THAT DOOFUS CHRIS BOTTI).

GOL!! Chris may have a doofus surname, but otherwise, methinks he's probably alright.

Sixth Sense kid: "I see doofuses... everywhere."
Police interrogation officer, Sergeant Daniel Doofus: "The doofuses you see, are they in the room with us right now?"

Fun Fact: In 'The Adventures Of Tom Sawyer', it's mentioned that Indian Joe was born in an Injun Summer.

I feel pert-dern proud to know that I was able to introduce you to a Glenn Miller song that you loved immediately. So far, Glenn's got two votes (three if I toss in Janie's non-vote) and he's definitely still in this close contest!

  9. Interesting battle. Can't say that any of them truly called out to me for a vote, and none of them sent robo calls to my phone slandering the other, so I'll have to just go with the one that was the most pleasant to my ears in this moment.

Thanks for mentioning dIEDRE again I had fully intended to get her added to my list last month, but you know how those good intentions go, right? Anyway... I have her added to my temiplate as well as updated today's post with her info.

As for the vote.... I'm going to give mine to Botti.

  10. Yo S Man,

You know Morrison said when he was on a trip with his family as a kid, they passed a car accident in which an Indian died -- he felt the Indian's soul enter him.  Similarly, as a tyke, when Morrison died -- he entered my soul... I was wobbly and slurring dark "poetry" for a few days, started to pull my pants down during show and tell but the teacher pulled me by the ear out of the room.  My parents checked and the cough syrup bottles were untouched, the little pencil lines on the booze bottles still matched the levels -- they took swigs to ensure I didn't drink from them and add water, nope....  nobody could explain it!

A vote for The Doors and Morrison showing his range, his softer side, sounds like opium of the highest quality.   No vote for Glen Miller, "Say. what's the big idea."  And Botti's tune would be at home soundtracking a video of new Apple products or piping through mall speakers on my way to Chess King, Foot Locker to put the latest Adidas sweatsuit on layaway, and the shop to get the jheri curl fine tuned (lest it become a scary curl), smooth.

Happy retirement in a nice place with sane drivers (only drive-by shoutings, salutary) and seasons.

Yeah. Apparently Morrison hit the hooch & the Acid at a very early age!

      Double-GOL!!
'Chess King' sounded vaguely familiar, so I looked it up.
I can't say I ever shopped there. When I was a young stud - after I'd passed the 'Mom-Buying-My-Clothes-At-JC Penney' phase - I did most of my shopping for "threads" at places like Rudy Vallée's and Hoot Gibson's Clothiers For Men.

      >>... Happy retirement in a nice place with sane drivers (only drive-by shoutings, salutary) and seasons.

Thanks! That's pretty accurate. I've lived here just under 4 years now and have only flipped-off three drivers. Helck! That's less than one per year. Nuttin' like my four years in Reno, where I always drove with both middle fingers permanently extended over my steering wheel.

  11. Al Bondigas here. I never thought about golden shadow from a big band song, but, I guess anything can trigger memories, feelings, emotions, etc. I really liked that Glenn Miller song and might even plug it into my favorites while at the gym. If anyone at the gym knew I was grunting and slamming weights to Glenn Miller, goodbye angry, sweaty, old man image. The Door's song isn't my cup of tea, but I did like Chris Botti's, just not as much as Glenn Miller's. So, rulin' fer Miller!! That's it, that's muh rulin'.

Yeah, I can definitely hear shades of goldenshadow in Glenn's 'Indian Summer'. I've been in such a melancholic state o' mind lately that I'm catching glimpses of goldenshadow everywhere anymore.

In my 90-minute walk through The Ranchlands yesterday, there was so much quiet, sunny, snowy joy and memories of childhood flooding me that it almost made me weep a bit.

I keep hearing my mind echo this same otherworldly mantra: I'm not here. I'm not really here.
