Alright, let's get on it. Let's get ON this thing!...
.
EUGENE  MARTONE  VS.  JACK  BUTLER
.
My last BOTB installment had a Down 'N' Out Urban theme, featuring songs about teenage runaways, street corner prostitution, and a heroin addict in Los Angeles. A real fun affair. (Actually, it wasn't nearly as depressing as it sounds and it inspired some good dialogue in the comment section.)
.
This time, I decided to do a 180-degree turnaround and feature something light and beautiful. (Let it not be said that I'm just a One-Trick Pony.)
.
GOODNIKS  VS.  NO-GOODNIKS
.
Wackypedia sez:
.
"Theme from A Summer Place" is a song with lyrics by Mack Discant and music by Max Steiner, written for the 1959 film A Summer Place, which starred Sandra Dee and Troy Donahue.
.

The melody has acquired a reputation as being one of those familiar pieces of music that nearly everyone has heard but few people can accurately name.
.
GODZILLA  VS.  KING  KONG
.
The theme from 'A Summer Place' was first recorded by Hugo Winterhalter (of 'Canadian Sunset' fame) and has been covered a godzillion times since then. However, its most well-known incarnation by Percy Faith & His Orchestra spent 9 consecutive weeks at Billboard's #1 spot in 1960. That set a Billboard record for instrumentals that still stands today.

.
RIDDLER  VS.  BATMAN
.
Chet Atkins recorded his version of 'A Summer Place' in 1961.
.
Wackypedia sez:
.
Atkins, known as "Mr. Guitar" and "The Country Gentleman", was an American musician ... and record producer who, along with Owen Bradley and Bob Ferguson, among others, created the country music style that came to be known as the Nashville sound.
.
Rolling Stone ... ranked him number 21 on their list of "The 100 Greatest Guitarists Of All Time." Among many other honors, Atkins received 14 Grammy Awards and the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.

  1. Good Morning Mr Stephen~

What a pleasant way to start the day - even if it is noon. Me thinks that the ol' magic eight ball and Mr Sixwell are voting the same way today. I'm glad for that, as it appears they are leaning the same direction that I am.

Percy Faith is simply light and airy. Makes one feel as though they are gliding through the day on a light cloud with a soft breeze. I was disappointed when the tune ended, as I wanted it to go on a little bit longer.

Chet and Floyd are extremely talented musicians. In a different setting, I may have given my vote to them. However, when put up against Percy here, their cloud feels a little heavy. Not full on thundercloud heavy, but heavy enough to rain on someone's parade.

For this reason I am voting with Sixwell and the 8 Ball for Percy.

Looking forward to seeing you at my NSFW battle.

I enjoyed your NSFW Battle. And, really, it wasn't nearly as over-the-top as I'd imagined it might be.

John Wayne, Lee Marvin, and Sam Peckinpah -- never thought I'd find all three of them in a BOTB installment. Ha!

It seems to be a common theme here that had I used Chet against just about ANY OTHER version of this song, he'd have gotten the voter's vote.

  2. Now, you know how much I love Chet Atkins, CGP, and when you add in the magnificent piano of Floyd Cramer, that combination is hard to beat.

Having said that, Percy Faith's version of "Theme From A Summer Place" is a genuine classic, and you know that there's a special place in my heart for "beautiful music." Had you included any other version besides Percy's, Chet and Floyd would win, but in this case, give my vote to Mr. Faith and his wonderful orchestra.

Chet, incidentally, figures in my latest battle as well.

Even if he doesn't win MY Battle, Chet Atkins was definitely the man of the hour in this round of BOTB.

"Beautiful Music" -- here's a Fun Fact: When BOTB first began, I was working in Phoenix as a legal document courier. I would shuttle important documents back and forth between the courthouses downtown and various law firms.

The radio station I most often had playing in my company car was KOY, which played "Beautiful Music" 24/7. Sometimes I would pull over to jot down the title of a song they had just played, thinking I would use it someday in a future BOTB installment.

And THAT is probably how 'Theme From A SUMMER PLACE' wound up on my list to begin with. I know it's been on that list for years, and I'll bet KOY was responsible for it.

And, incidentally, KOY and beautiful music like 'A SUMMER PLACE' is probably what kept me from killing Airheadzona drivers with my bare hands in downtown Phoenix 5 days a week. :^)

  5. And Stephen,
you are gettin purty good at this battle stuff. A good battle indeed. I remember hearing this song but didn't know the name, now I do. Percy's is probably the one I remember the most but Chet's is the one I like the most, more life in it and the guitar work made it more appealing to me. (Now how long I will remember this fact is another story altogether) Nonetheless, it reminds me of summer and those endless days when we were straightenen' out people's lives and such. Well maybe you were and perhaps it was my life that was bent. Summers seemed to last forever back then perhaps the experience was elongated by the hangovers.

"Have a bitchin' Summer!" -- Ha!-Ha! Those were the days. I feel like I lived an entire lazy lifetime in the shadow of Lifeguard Station #26. Really wish I could go back to that era and live those years all over again. It really was like paradise on earth. I just didn't fully realize it at the time.

Man, I gotta go through some of my old high school and junior high school yearbooks now and find me a "Have a bitchin' Summer" inscription and then post it on this blog. (I wonder whose name I'll find associated with it. And I wonder if I'll even be able remember the person.)

  7. Percy Percy Percy. Some iconic songs are beatable. Some iconic songs are not. And if this iconic song gets beat (by a nice version, admittedly) I'll eat my shorts. It triggers an emotion that I can't quite focus on, but it is at least partially melancholy.

I was a kid when this came out, but I remember it, and I remember feeling that it sounded like "the past," while most stuff I heard on the radio or around older kids (like my cousins) sounded like "the future." I liked the song then but looked forward to the future. Now I miss the past and am trepidatious about the future. We are now "ye of little Percy Faith."

    1. Ha!-Ha! "ye of little Percy Faith"

I have THE BEST readers whole the world!

McBrother, you have completely tapped into that thing that can't be described. It can be felt, but words are incapable of adequately explaining it.

"Melancholy" -- yes. "Bittersweet" works fairly well, too. Long ago, I invented my own word for it: GoldenShadow. Because it's like a "shadow" of the past that you can faintly recall which feels "golden". But it's not a super-shiny gold. More like a sundown being reflected off of the gold.

When I was still in school, on a Sunday, when the Sun was going down and the shadows were elongated -- I could kind of "feel" that time of the day. It wasn't just a time, but a kind of mellow emotional feeling. Sort of melancholic, bittersweet. That was GoldenShadow.

And this song is totally imbued with that feeling. I think you are describing the same thing.

For many, many years, I thought I was the only person who felt GoldenShadow. But then I found out that it's a universally human thing. It's something in our souls.

The one good thing he noticed since both surgeries is the green tint that was present for more than year is now gone. So, that's a huge relief. I think everything is going to be okay. 9. Al Bondigas here. I knew I'd be rulin' fer Percy Faith before I even heard Chet Atkin's version. Chet's was definitely great, but Percy's 'Summer Place' is one of my favorite songs ever. That along with Paul Mauriat's 'Love is Blue' and Hugo Winterhalter's 'Canadian Sunset'. They are songs that sound like "the past", as Sheboygan aptly stated it. I was thinking the same thing before reading his words. Maybe he picked up on that from my thoughts. Maybe he has Sheboygan boy VI sense. Anyway, These songs sometimes make me want to escape to my private little place and cry like a little bitch. Well, I've said too much. Anyway, rulin' fer Percy Faith. That's it!! That's my rulin'.

In contrast, I'll tell you whut, Atkin's and Cramer's summer place is on the porch of a cabin in a rockin' chair with a cooler of Coors Light or a beach chair wasting away in margartiville with all the time in the world. Atkins gets my vote.

  13. I wore a nice comment and blogger totally ate it. I hate blogger and it hate me.

Anyway...let’s see if I can do better or at least cast my vote.

Percy certainly has that familiarity/nostalgia thing going on and no doubt about it, his version is great, BUT, as for me and my personal taste it’s a little to Sandra Dee and Troy Donahue, totally white bread’ if ya know what I mean. I love G Dogg description of th Atkins/Cramer version (but of course, you knew I would), as a matter of fact I love it so much just as soon as I finish up here I think I’ll go sit on the porch of this little ole cabin and perhaps take a walk down to the beach. In the meantime, give my vote to Atkins/Cramer for giving a new perspective to an old tune. Ha!

You & Blogger pick up where The Hatfields & The McCoys left off!

Thanks for your second effort! Anything worth doing is worth doing... again, after the first one gets phuq't up. :^) ("Hey, watch your language! This is a family-friendly blog"... sez Sandra Dee and Troy Donahue. By the way, what hue did Troy don? Pink?)

It's good to see Chet getting some votes. It kind of restores my faith in myself. Because I was shocked that I could have misjudged this match-up so badly. I didn't think it would / could / should have been anything near to a shutout. But for awhile there I was starting to question my ol' BOTB judgment. Chet was going to be the underdog, sure, but I didn't foresee it being an absolute slaughterhouse. It's definitely improving as the days go on.

      Thanks!

    2. Cool, glad you enjoy it. I enjoy the Sandra Dee and Troy Donahue reference better - That sums it up big time.

      Sincerely,
      Fellow Atkins/Cramer voter.

  14. I'm back from one party to the next. The funeral I had to attend was one of the best as well as most interesting that I'd ever been to.

Since I'm late to the party I'm not going to read other comments until I've entered mine.

I'd never heard the Chet Atkins version of "Summer Place" and it's really great. But next to the Percy Faith version to me it was like going to the best sock hop in the world where the best sock hop band was playing. And I don't mean that in a bad way. It's just the mental image that was in my head while listening to the music. I really liked the music.

Still, the Percy Faith version wells something up inside me unlike many songs. My mother had the album with that song and I heard it a lot. Now hearing that song version evokes so many thoughts in my head.

No doubt that the Atkins version is super duper good, but Faith is in my blood.

I vote for the lush sound of Percy Faith.

    1. Well, dang, LEE, I've never ever heard of a funeral being described in such a way. It almost makes me wish I had known the person and could have attended the funeral. (Now there's something I don't say every day, Chauncey!)

      >>... Still, the Percy Faith version wells something up inside me unlike many songs.

Yeah, see there's that thing we have discussed before. That "thing" that NO ONE can really explain because it's Spiritual and goes deeper than words are capable of describing. It's that unfathomable quality of music. And the reason that I've been saying for so long that music is the most Spiritual art form.

You and my Brother and Sheboyganboy and I, and probably a few others here, have noted that there's some mysterious, sort of melancholic quality to this melody that hearkens back to a "past", whether a real past or not. And how can that possibly be explained in human terms?

    2. Well I'm going to have to go with Chet here, and not just for the six string Magic. Percy's version is is connected to way too many memories of sad Childhood Days coupled with adolescent hangovers. Perhaps TMI for the both but the Percy version never fails to conjure up old ghosts. Chet all the way for the win.

Muchos Gracias for the vote, Brother! (I would have just said "thank you", but it IS 'Sink-o With Mayo).

Truly sorry to hear that the childhood was sad. That actually makes me kind of sad. It always bums me out a little bit when I learn of unhappy childhoods because mine was so happy, joyful, carefree, and I wish everyone could experience a childhood like I did.

Another bote por de Chet Atkins! Good deal!

  15. I'm glad to hear that you're not a One Trick Pony. But you may still be Crazy After All These Beers. I know I am.

I'm going against seemingly the majority bote (and the reinvigorated Magic 8-Ball), but I liked the uniqueness of Atkins/Cramer. It sounds like the perfect song to listen to while sitting on the beach, drinking a cold one. My cohort agrees with that, but that's not saying much, because he'd listen to pretty much anything while sitting pretty much anywhere if it meant a chance to drink a cold one. I think he may be an alcoholic. Let me pop another beer with him and find out.

    Two botes for Atkins/Cramer.

    1. Ha!-Ha! J S-A, you are a true friend to be so concerned about your cohort!

And indeed, the only way to know for certain just how much your friend drinks is to drink with him and then count them up... if you're able to.

If you actually lose count because there's so many, then it means your buddy IS DEFINITELY an alcoholic. You will need to explain your concerns to him and let him know you're worried about his drinking. I suggest doing that over a few beers, as it's a casual, relaxing setting and may help him to take the bad news better.

If the first attempt fails, a truly good friend will try, try again!

Thanks for the botes, BRYAN & OTHER B! Nice to see Chet actually staging something of a comeback!

Happy 5th of May. May I suggest Modelo Negras, and many OF them! (Certainly the only Mexican beer worth popping the top off of.)

  16. I think the 8 ball got this one right for me. I haven't read the comments, so I don't know how the voting is going. But Percy Faith captures the essence of summer. I can practically smell the suntan lotion.

Yeah, I smell that suntan lotion, too. Heck, I can even feel the sand between my toes, and my back is itching like crazy from the dried saltwater!

I gotta get home now, take a shower and make me an egg salad sandwich. ...You know, the regular routine after a day of body-surfing and girl-watching. [;-)

I don't like Hawaiian music too much so the 2nd one doesn't compare.

Your vote is greatly appreciated! Thanks for taking the time to listen and submit $0.02, ol' chum!

I would have guessed you as a voter who'd lean more toward the guitar-centric version by Chet. Which, A) goes to show ya what I know, and B) goes to show ya why BOTB remains interesting after 5 years.

      Nice to see ya here!
