Welcome back, my friends, to the "Battle" that never ends.
We're so glad you could attend. Come inside! Come inside!
.
This is 'BATTLE OF THE BANDS' ('BOTB') where you listen to different recordings and vote for the one you like best. A new Battle gets posted on the 1st of each month and on the 7th, I place my own vote, tally 'em all up and announce the winner.
.
Friend? Foe? Stranger? No matter, ALL are welcome. So pull up a chair, pour yourself 24 oz. of DOG BITE High Gravity Lager (or the poison of your choice) and turn it up to Eleven!
.
[NOTE: Links to the first year of 'BOTB' (#1 - #24) can be found at the very bottom of this page.]

BATTLE OF THE BANDS: MAY 1, 2023 (Or, THE DOCTOR VS. THE OUTLAW)

.
WELCOME BACK, Doggs & Doggettes!
(No Bud Light-drinking Trans-Dogs allowed.)
..
.
.
After a two month break, we are now returning to the Silver Dollar Saloon where "Dogs Are Welcome & People Are Tolerated".
.
.
There is only one (count 'em: 1) self-imposed rule in my $ilver Dollar $aloon $ong Challenge, and that rule is: In this contest I am allowed to use ONLY songs that I have heard being played in Virginia City's Silver Dollar Saloon.
.
So far, Dr. John has been unbeatable (he's been like the Rocky Marciano of the $D$$C). The Good Doctor has already easily whipped 3 contenders:
.
The Average White Band
Johnny Lang
Greg & Steve

.
None of those artists managed to score more than 4 votes against Doctor John!
.
But this month we have a new challenger who just might be able to give The Doc his first real fight. On August 8th of last year, I was in the Silver Dollar Saloon and heard the song 'I Ain't Living Long Like This' by The Country Outlaw (a.k.a. Waylon Jennings and Mr. Jessi Colter).
.
Let's see if ol' Waylon can chase The Doctor out of his operating room.
.
Alright, let's get on it.  Let's get ON this thing!
.
RIGHT PLACE, WRONG TIME -- Dr. John
.
.
I AIN'T LIVING LONG LIKE THIS -- Waylon Jennings
.
Please drop your two cents into the comment section, and then cast votes at the other BOTBer's Battles (see links in right-hand column). I'll be back here on or about the 8th O' May to place my own "bote" and announce the winner.
.

  1. Stephen,

What's this, it's the first of a brand new month? How did this happen, brother? I must be getting old. Wait, I can't believe I said that! Wash my mouth out for sure. I'm not old, I'm a spring chicken. Okay, I'm a chicken still with a little spring in me. :)

I've gotta go with DR. JOHN. "Right Place, Wrong Time" just brings back good feelings from yesterday. Waylon Jennings is someone I rarely listened to, so without that personal connection his song didn't click with me. That being said, I was surprised that I enjoyed his style more than I thought. Have a bandtastic day, my friend!

    1. Hi, Hello, Howdy, CAThy!

Honey, you and I ain't *NEVER* gonna get old because we done gonna get Raptured outta this mess before we age to the level of "old". We've got the best Friend in high places that a person could have.

And even if it turns out that the Pre-Trib Rapture isn't really a thing (there are sound Scriptural arguments on both sides), He's still gonna protect & direct us. Either way, there's only about 7 years left, and that's not enough years to make us officially "old". That's my story and I'm sticking with it!

  2. Much as I like Doctor John, that Waylon Jennings tune really rocked! I'm voting for Waylon!

Yes, indeed, that Waylon song rocks hard! And that piano that kicks in toward the end ratchets it up even another notch.

It's *this* kind of music that really got me into Country music.

  3. I am still for Dr. John and his sexy way of singing. I like the rawness of it more than Jennings style.

Dr. John doesn't only sing sexy, he is sexy! At least that's what Rickie Lee Jones said. Me... I wouldn't know.

  4. Waylon's song is nice sounding fare, but pretty standard sounding stuff. He pulls it off well, but he doesn't wow me.

Once again Dr John rules in this match up.

Give my vote to Dr. John.

I wouldn't exactly label Waylon's song as "standard sounding". In the 1970s, when this was recorded, it was precisely this sort of sound that invented the Outlaw Country subgenre of Country-Western music.

Yeah, we've heard this type of sound since then, but in its day, this was a revolutionary attack on tradition. And that probably explains why it appeals to me so much.

  5. That Waylon song isn't too bad, certainly nothing to sneeze at, but Dr. John runs away with this one. He may indeed be the king of The Silver Dollar Saloon. Or, at least the prince, in case the king is a dog.

Give my bote to the prince. And a cookie to the king. I've heard through multiple trusted sources that he's a good, good boy.

King is indeed a dog. But I suspect you may be right that the Doctor just might be sitting on the throne when this $ong Challenge is over.

In fact, I may even shorten it to just two more songs that I think have any chance whatsoever to dethrone the Doctor.

  6. Nope, sorry. I'm sticking with Dr. John. Waylon was fairly entertaining, though.

Waylon was, in fact, the most entertaining performer I ever saw in concert. He even told one loudmouth character in the audience to "Shut up!" I never saw that in a concert before or since.

Thanks for dropping your two cents in the Doctor's kitty. Looks like he's on his way to his fourth easy win.

    2. I've seen a few entertaining characters in concert, too. Pete Townsend once asked a heckler what his fuckin' problem was. ☺

Ha! Truth be told, I would probably heckle Pete Townshend too! :^D

  7. "I've been in the right world, but it seems wrong, wrong, wrong." Ain't that the truth!

Dr. John's song is just too good. I'm sure you already counted my vote ahead of time. In fact, you prolly have all us regulars pegged by now and know the outcome of this BotB... certainly with better accuracy than the late Amazing Sixwell and all the other prognosticators through the years, including the Eight Ball.

Beer Brother Bryan suggests that Dr. John is the prince of the saloon. Do they ever even play Prince in there? You could put up "1999" or "Kiss" against "Right Place." That might give him some serious competition. I kid, I kid. I am sure NO Prince is allowed there. But "Wait in the Truck" MIGHT knock off Dr. John if that hits the ears there. The Doctor better get bumped off soon or you're gonna have to retire the champ just like Rocky!

Yes, but thankfully, not for too much longer. (The Bible tells me so.)

Ha!-Ha! Yes, I have a perty dern goot idear who is going to win most of my Battles pre-posting. Because, as you say, I have a pretty solid idea of how most voters will "bote". But there is *ALWAYS* some surprises.

I don't usually mentally try to figure out how *everyone* will vote prior to posting a Battle, however. The only times I do that is when I'm contemplating doing a Battle that I expect will be a blowout. Then I'll mentally check to see if I think I'm safe in avoiding a shutout. I don't mind a blowout at all (much prefer them to ties), but I don't EVER want a shutout.

No, I can't recall ever hearing the poor man's Jimi Hendrix (Prince) played at the $ilver Dollar $aloon. But the last time I was there, I heard Pat Benatar, and that's getting pretty close, ain't it? ;^)

Although I could prolong this Challenge a good deal longer, I think I'm going to present only two or maybe three more challengers to Dr. John, because I already know he would whip all the others I have waiting in the wings. I've been saving what I think is the *best* challenger for last. "Best" because this song may have the best chance of dethroning The Doc, and because this song has some history behind it that I think you'll appreciate (even though your vote for Doc John is guaranteed).

  8. Howdy, Stephen T!
Hope your summer is off to a good start. Hang onto your hat, my friend, cause I'm about to surprise us both (probably) by switching back to Dr. John for the vote.
Waylon's "I ain't living..." just isn't the best (still good though) song I've heard the towering trail blazer do.

Well, Spring came and went in the blink of an eye (I think it lasted 10 days), and was mostly covered in (fake) snow. And if *this* is Summer, it's off to a very wet start. (I miss Santa Monica.)

I'm not surprised that Doctor John is going to win this contest, but I sure am surprised by the margin in which he's going to win it. I expected something at least reasonably competitive.

My next one will be better (...maybe).

  9. And Stephen...
Good battle, good song, accurate sentiment and definitely something to ponder on the date you were there last, if you know what I mean. BUT I don't think it beats the good old Dr. John in my book. Not saying that it's your people but I didn't appreciate Waylon's as much.

    1. ...AND, POOH, THAT'S NOT ALL!...

Indeed, you caught on to one of the reasons I dig the Waylon song as much as I do. Those lyrics... somehow, someway, I can relate.

The good ol' Doc has proven once again that he is tough - if not impossible - to beat. He just may run the table in this contest. BUT... I've been saving what I think could be his toughest competitor for last. Nevertheless, I still think The Doctor is probably going to go wire to wire. (Is my time as a horse-player showing through?)

  10. **** COMMENT From JUDGE AL BONDIGAS ****

Al Bondigas here. Well, it sho do look like a major league ass-whuppin here. I really wasn't sure who I was gonna make a rulin' fer, as it could really go either way. I wanted to help dilute the blowout, but I wanted to be honest with the rulin'. So I deliberated for some time and came up with a rulin' fer Waylon. Anyway, rulin' fer Waylon. That's it!! That's muh rulin'.
